Excerpt: The Henschel Quartet is a German String Quartet comprising the Henschel siblings; Christoph and Markus (Violinists) and Monika (Violist) and, the cellist, Mathias Beyer-Karlshøj, who joined them in 1994. Christoph, Markus and Monika Henschel studied under Felix Andrievsky, a graduate of the Moscow Violin School of playing (Yampolsky and Yankelevich) and gained distinction in their diplomas from the Royal College of Music, in London. Mathias Beyer-Karlshøj studied under the Swedish cellist Thorleif Thedeen and gained a distinction in 1996, at the end of his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. An intensive musical experience was gained through their contact with Sergiu Celibidache and with Prof. Franz Beyer from the Musikhochschule in Munich. The London Master Classes and classes at the Musikhochschule in Cologne, Germany with the Amadeus quartet had a determining influence on the musical development and direction of the ensemble. Similarly, regular courses with members of the La Salle quartet and Alban Berg Quartet had a profound influence on the Henschel Quartet. The Henschel Quartet were quartet in residence at both the Aldeburgh Festival (1994) and at the Tanglewood Music Festival (1995/1996). At the latter, they were coached by musicians Louis Krasner and Eugene Lehner, who had themselves worked with composers such as Béla Bartók and Arnold Schönberg, and , who gave the quartet unique insights into the works of the Second Viennese School. The Henschel Quartets repertoire encompasses more than 200 works from the classical and romantic to 20th century and contemporar...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19800113 ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Fanny Cäcilie Mendelssohn (14 November 1805 - 14 May 1847), later Fanny Hensel, was a German pianist and composer, the sister of the composer Felix Mendelssohn and granddaughter of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. She was the grandmother of the philosopher Paul Hensel and the mathematician Kurt Hensel. She also wrote, amongst other works for the piano, a cycle of pieces depicting the months of the year, Das Jahr ("The Year"). The music was written on coloured sheets of paper, and illustrated by her husband Wilhelm . Each piece was also accompanied by a short poem. Fanny Mendelssohn's son Sebastian Hensel edited the family correspondence as The Mendelssohn Family 1729-1847 (tr. into English, 4th revised edition 1884) which still remains an important source of information about Fanny, Felix and their relatives. ... Excerpt: Giacomo Meyerbeer (5 September 1791 2 May 1864) was a noted German-born opera composer, and the first great exponent of Grand Opera. At his peak in the 1830s and 1840s, he was the most famous and successful composer and producer of opera in Europe, yet is little known today. Statue of Meyerbeer in the Belgian town of Spa, where he stayed many timesMeyerbeer was born to a Jewish family in Tasdorf (now a part of Rüdersdorf), near Berlin with the name Jacob Liebmann Beer. His father was the enormously wealthy financier Jacob Judah Herz Beer (1769-1825) and his much-beloved mother, Amalia Liebmann Meyer Wulff (1767-1854) also came from the wealthy elite. Their other children included the astronomer Wilhelm Beer and the poet Michael Beer. Meyerbeer's first keyboard instructor was Franz Lauska (b. 1764), a pupil of Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and a favoured teacher at the Berlin court. Meyerbeer also became one of Muzio Clementi's pupils while Clementi was in Berlin, and old Clementi himself, although he had long given up teaching, was so much struck, during a visit to Berlin, with the promise displayed in the boy's performance as to consent to give Meyerbeer lessons. Meyerbeer made his public debut in 1801 playing Mozart's D Minor Piano Concerto in Berlin. The Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung reported: 'The amazing keyboard playing of young Bär (a Jewish lad of 9 ), who carried off the difficult passages and other solo parts with aplomb, and has fine powers of rendition even more rarely found in one of his age, made the concert even more interesting'. Throughout his youth, although he was determined to become a musician, Meye...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=187895 ... Read more

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Moses Mendelssohn (6 September 1729 (Hebrew calendar 12 Ellul 5489)- 4 January 1786) was a German Jewish philosopher to whose ideas the renaissance of European Jews, Haskalah (the Jewish Enlightenment) is indebted. He has been referred to as the father of Reform Judaism. Born to a poor Jewish family in Dessau and originally destined for a rabbinical career, Mendelssohn educated himself in German thought and literature and from his writings on philosophy and religion came to be regarded as a leading cultural figure of his time by both Germans and Jews. He also established himself as an important figure in the Berlin textile industry, which was the foundation of his family's wealth. Moses Mendelssohn's descendants include the composers Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn and the founders of the Mendelssohn banking house. Moses Mendelssohn was born in Dessau. His father's name was Mendel and he later took the surname Mendelssohn ("Mendel's son"). Mendel Dessau was a poor scribe - a writer of torah scrolls - and his son Moses in his boyhood developed curvature of the spine. His early education was cared for by his father and by the local rabbi, David Fränkel, who besides...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:ABRAHAM MENDELSSOHN BARTHOLDY.Abraham Mendelssohn,' the second son of Moses, was destined to add a new and even more brilliant lustre to the name by his son Felix. He himself expressed this by the modest humorous words, ' Formerly I was the son of my father, and now I am the father of my son.' These words show the character of the man. It is true that he stands between the firm adherence to Judaism of Moses and the sincere Christian faith of Felix and Fanny, between the philosophic views of his father and the aesthetic views of his children ; but he was himself a harmonious, independent, vigorous character, and had nothing of the epigon in him.We know little of his youth down to the beginning of the century. In the year 1803 he occupied the office of a cashier in the counting-house of Messrs. Fould, at Paris. Here he probably often talked about his future prospects with his sister Henrietta, in her cosy arbour in the Rue Richer, and in their conversation she very likely often mentioned her intimate friend Leah or Lilla Salomon s as a suitable wife for her brother. Leah's family enjoyed an agreeable social position in Berlin. G. Merkel, who was intimately acquainted with the Salomon family, and kept up a lively correspondence with Leah, after her death in 1842 restored some of the letters to her family, and at the same time gave the following description of her youth :—Leah Salomon. That was her maiden name. Her elder brother had adopted the name of Bartholdy, after the former proprietor of the garden belonging to the family.3 Leah wasnot handsome, but her eloquent black eyes, her sylph-like figure, her gentle, modest behaviour, and the power of her lively conversation, full of accurate judgment and striking but never malicious wit, made her most attractive. She was acq... ... Read more
