Product Description
Fanny Mendelssohn?s Piano Trio in D Minor strikes the listener by its powerful passion and beauty, yet it is not included in general index anthologies of music repertoire. Fanny?s story is emblematic, and her situation can help illuminate the fate of other 19th century women composers. How do their music relate to the canon? How can tradition be changed? How could past neglects be remedied, if they should be remedied? These questions surfaced in academic writings during the past few decades, and are part of an ongoing debate. In this writing, they are addressed through the case of Fanny Mendelssohn. The core part of the book is a comparative analysis of the Piano Trios in D minor by Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn to argue that there is no intrinsically musical justification for the neglect of Fanny?s composition. The two trios have enough similarities and analogies to show that her work fits securely into the tradition of the piano trio genre, while the subtle differences in dealing with musical details are witnesses to Fanny?s unique, distinct musical language, which is generally speaking more spontaneous than that of Felix. Fanny?s music is the music of a composer in her own right. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Contribution
Two hundred years ago, women faced many obstacles and limitations in their career choices. This was most certainly true in music, Clara Schumann being the most notable exception. Judit Bach eloquently makes the case that Fanny Mendolssohn, sister of Felix Mendolssohn, was deserving of the same laurels and opportunities as her sibling. After a detailed comparison of both composers Trios in D Minor and without denigrating the work of Felix, Dr. Bach suggests that there is no justification for Fanny's Trio tobe thought of as a less skilled or valued work. She makes a compelling argument that Fanny's Trio deserves to be included in the chamber music canon.

In light of the challenges that women have had to make for career advancement not only in the 19th century but in contemporary society, this book should prove interesting and informative reading. It is a solid piece of research and recommended for all music, art, and women studies libraries.

Product Description

When R. Larry Todd’s biography, Mendelssohn: A Life in Music, appeared in 2003, it won acclaim from several critics as a definitive biography. In researching Mendelssohn’s life over the last two and a half decades, Todd uncovered much new information about the composer and his music, his family and his peers, and his complex reception history. Now, as we approach the 2009 bicentenary of Mendelssohn’s birth, the author has chosen and compiled fifteen essays written between 1980 and 2005, including five previously unpublished, that examine several aspects of the composer whom Goethe and Heine likened to a second Mozart.

Mendelssohn Essays explores Mendelssohn’s precocity, his musical impressions of British culture, the role of the visual in his music, his compositional response to Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, and incomplete drafts from his musical estate of three instrumental works. In addition, a group of three essays focuses on the music of Mendelssohn’s sister Fanny Hensel, perhaps the most gifted woman composer of the century, and a significant, complex figure in the formation of the Mendelssohnian style.
