A bit bland.
If you know nothing about Danish composer Carl Nielsen's music, this is not the place to start.Hear something first.Most composers don't lead especially interesting lives.We are interested mainly in their music.I'd start with the Helios Overture.If it intrigues you, go on to other pieces, like the symphonies, and only then if you want to know about the man, start here.It's as good a place as any.Lawson has the advantage of a dearth of biographies on this composer, due in large measure to the family's refusal to release many of the composer's papers.A Nielsen fan of forty years, I knew most of this stuff.The big revelations had to do with his marriage, which suffered strains.You can read all about it.Other than that, it's mainly a recital of Nielsen's career, and you can get most of the essentials from an encyclopedia article.The best thing about the book, as far as I'm concerned, is its handsome production.The photos of Nielsen the boy, which face the title page, are absolutely extraordinary. ... Excerpt: The musical compositions by Carl Nielsen can be listed in terms of their genre, opus numbers and FS numbers that largely follow their chronological order. Nielsen's compositions are usually arranged using the 1965 catalogue compiled by Dan Fog and Torben Schousboe. The Fog Catalogue is arranged roughly in chronological order (according to their publication) for numbers below 161, except the two compositions Canto serioso (FS 132) and Græshoppen sidder paa Engen (FS 161). Numbers higher than 161 were assigned in connection with the publication of a Nielsen CD in 1998 of compositions discovered after 1965. Only some of Nielsen's published works are assigned with an opus number, and he skipped some numbers. David (born Christian Ludvig David in Copenhagen, July 30th, 1878 - April 18th, 1960) was a Danish lawyer, businessman and art collector. Key in defining the global scale of the world's largest facilities management company ISS A/S, he left his art collection to the Danish people, and his lakeside home as a summer retreat for the Prime Ministers of Denmark. The only son Magdalene Juliane née Hagen (1840-1901) and Johannes Hage Christian David, a railway engineer (1837-1890), David and his two younger twin sisters were born into a comfortable Jewish family in Copenhagen. Although poor in income, the family had a rich financial and religious history. Their great-grandfather was Joseph Nathan David (1758-1830), an immigrant Jewish wholesaler who's fortune had enabled his son Christian Georg Nathan David (1793-1874), to study to be an economist. Christian David converted to Christianity, and he had become a member of the constitutional assembly, serving as Danish Minister of Finance between 1864 and 1865. This stable financial background enabled David and his sisters to survive the early deaths of their parents. Schooled at the Metropolitanskolen (Danish: Metropolitan School), graduating in law from the University of Copenhagen in 1903. On graduation, David became a practising attorney, focusing on litigation. At the early age of 33 was granted the right to plead cases before the Danish Supreme Court.
