Il est considéré comme l'un des pionniers de la musique minimaliste, un courant de la musique contemporaine jouant un rôle central dans la musique classique des États-Unis. Pour caractériser son œuvre, et spécialement ses compositions de la période 1965-1976, il préfère utiliser l'expression « musique de phases » (traduite de l'américain Phasing), qui fait référence à son invention de la technique musicale du déphasage. À partir de 1976, il développe une écriture musicale basée sur le rythme et la pulsation avec l'une de ses œuvres les plus importantes, Music for 18 Musicians, qui marque le début de son large succès international. Dès lors reconnu comme un compositeur contemporain essentiel, il oriente son travail de composition autour de la mise en musique du discours, notamment dans des œuvres multimédia associant la vidéo créées en collaboration avec son épouse Beryl Korot.
