Product Description
The composer's only grand opera, which took years to write, was closest to his heart. Not quite finished when he died in 1880, it was orchestrated and provided with recitatives by Ernest Guiraud, who also added the famous barcarolle from an earlier opera-ballet by Offenbach. This volume, an unabridged reprint of the rare, comprehensive fifth edition, contains the full vocal score and all recitatives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tales of Hoffmann Vocal Score
An unusual score in which the Antonia act comes before the Giulietta act, but overall very clear print.Note that the text is only in French, and I noted a few text errors here and there.I'd recommend it over the Schirmer score, which is harder to read as the fonts are smaller. ... Read more

Excerpt: This is a complete list of the 98 operettas of Jacques Offenbach (18191880). The works of Offenbach (with the two exceptions of the opéras Die Rheinnixen and The Tales of Hoffmann) are generally referred to as 'operettas', however only 16 of them were designated as opérettes by the composer. A further 8 are opérette bouffe and there is a single 'opérette fantastique'. There are 24 opéras comiques, and 24 opéras bouffes, together with 2 'opéras bouffes féeries'. Other minor subgenres include opéra bouffon (5), bouffonerie musicale (3), saynète (2) pièce d'occasion (2) and revue (2). Offenbach invented names for some individual works: 'anthropophagie musicale', 'chinoiserie musicale', 'comédie à ariettes', 'conversation alsacienne', 'légende bretonne', 'légende napolitaine', There are also one each of the following; 'fantasie musicale', 'opéra féerie', 'tableau villageois', and 'valse'. For Offenbach's opéras see Die Rheinnixen and Les contes d'Hoffmann. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19073389 ... Read more

Excerpt: Jacques Offenbach (born Jacob Offenbach; 20 June 1819 5 October 1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of the Romantic era and one of the originators of the operetta form. Of German-Jewish ancestry, he was one of the most influential composers of popular music in Europe in the 19th century, and many of his works remain in the repertory. Offenbach's numerous operettas, such as Orpheus in the Underworld, and La belle Hélène, were extremely popular in both France and the English-speaking world during the 1850s and 1860s. They combined political and cultural satire with witty grand opera parodies. His popularity in France went down during the 1870s after the Second Empire, and he fled France, but during the last years of his life, his popularity rebounded, and several of his operettas are still performed. While his name remains associated most closely with the French operetta and the Second Empire, it is Offenbach's one fully operatic masterpiece, The Tales of Hoffmann (Les Contes d'Hoffmann), composed at the end of his career, that has become the mos...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=65414 ... Comic opera, or light opera, denotes a sung dramatic work ofa light or comic nature, usually with a happy ending. Formsof comic opera first developed in late 17th century Italy.By the 1730s, a new operatic genre, opera buffa, emerged asan alternative to opera seria. It quickly made its way toFrance, where it became opéra bouffon, and eventually, inthe following century, French operetta, with JacquesOffenbach as its most accomplished practitioner. Both theItalian and French forms were major artistic exports toother parts of Europe. Many countries developed their owngenres of comic opera, incorporating the Italian and Frenchmodels along with their own musical traditions. Examplesinclude Viennese operetta, German singspiel, Spanishzarzuela, Russian comic opera, English ballad opera, andSavoy Opera. ... Read more
