Excerpt: Lewis Brian Hopkin Jones (28 February 1942 3 July 1969) known as Brian Jones was an English musician and founding member of The Rolling Stones. Jones was a gifted multi-instrumentalist, and known for the use of non-traditional instruments such as the sitar and marimba and to experiment with the slide guitar in the work of The Rolling Stones. Jones is also remembered for cultivating his image with flamboyant attire and a lifestyle that included recreational drug use during the dawn of a new youth culture that centered around "sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll." Jones was born in the Park Nursing Home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on 28 February 1942. An attack of croup at the age of four left him with asthma, which lasted for the rest of his life. His middle-class parents, Lewis Blount Jones and Louisa Beatrice Jones (née Simmonds) were of Welsh descent. Brian had two sisters: Pamela, who was born on 3 October 1943 and who died on 14 October 1945 of leukemia; and Barbara, born in 1946. Both Jones's parents were interested in music his mother Louisa was a pianist who taught lessons, and in addition to his job as an aeronautical engineer, Lewis ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=81456 ... Product Description
The study of American, microtonal composer Harry Partch (1901-1974) is complicated by specious autobiographical accounts, contradictory theoretical positions, and a methodology predicated on a vague concept of 'intuition'. These complications are exacerbated by his use of a forty-three-tone scale, non-Western sources of inspiration, novel terms for preexisting ideas, and an integration of music, drama, and dance. In addition, his use of ratios to represent pitch, and the unique tablature notations for his nearly forty invented instruments create a seemingly insurmountable barrier to the analysis of his music. Yet while these complexities are initially overwhelming, they actually work to obscure the simplicity of Partch?s core ideas and compositional technique. At the foundation of all his ideas was an individualistic concept he called One Voice. One Voice was the process by which Partch projected his self image through his works. In doing so, he created a model that aimed to inspire others toward individual expression and artistic investigation. ... Read more

Excerpt:Chord from just Bohlen-Pierce scale: C-G-A, tuned to harmonics 3, 5, and 7. "BP" above the clefs indicates Bohlen-Pierce notation. Play (help ·info ) The Bohlen Pierce scale ( BP scale ) is a musical scale that offers an alternative to the octave -repeating scales typical in Western and other musics, specifically the diatonic scale . Compared with octave-repeating scales, its intervals are more consonant with certain types of acoustic spectra . It was independently described by Heinz Bohlen , Kees van Prooijen and John R. Pierce . Pierce, who, with Max Mathews and others, published his discovery in 1984 , renamed the Pierce 3579b scale and its chromatic variant the Bohlen Pierce scale after learning of Bohlen's earlier publication. Bohlen had proposed the same scale based on consideration of the influence of combination tones on the Gestalt impression of intervals and chords . The intervals between BP scale pitch classes are based on odd integer frequency ratios, in contrast with the intervals in diatonic scales, which employ both odd and even ratios found in the harmonic series . Specifically, the BP scale steps are based on ratios of integers whose factors are 3, 5, and 7. Thus the scale contains consonant harmonies based on the odd harmonic overtones 3/5/7/9 ( play (help ·info )). The chord formed by the ratio 3:5:7 ( play (help ·info )) serves much the same role as the 4:5:6 chord (a major triad play (help ·info )) does in diatonic scales (3:5:7 = 1:1.66:2.33 and 4:5:6 = 2:2.5:3 = 1:1.25:1.5). Chords and modulation 3:5:7's intonation sensitivity pattern is similar to 4:5:6's (the just major chord), more si... ... Read more

Excerpt: Harry Partch (June 24, 1901 September 3, 1974) was an American composer and instrument creator. He was one of the first twentieth-century composers to work extensively and systematically with microtonal scales, writing much of his music for custom-made instruments that he built himself, tuned in 11-limit (43-tone) just intonation. Harry Partch's instruments in performancePartch was born on June 24, 1901 in Oakland, California soon after his parents, both Presbyterian missionaries, fled the Boxer Rebellion in China. He spent his childhood in small, remote towns in Arizona and New Mexico, where he heard and sang songs in Mandarin, Spanish, and American Indian languages. Partch was sterile, probably due to childhood mumps, and most of his loving relationships were with men. As a child, he learned to play the clarinet, harmonium, viola, piano, and guitar. He began to compose at an early age, using the equal-tempered chromatic scale, the tuning system most common in Western music...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=147683 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Master Work of a Genius
Rarely, if ever in your life do you come across a masterpiece. Think of Mutiny on the Bounty, Nordhoff and Hall as an example, the works of Eiseley or Bradbury or Joyce. But those are works of mere fiction.

Harry Partch was nothing if non-fiction. He was a scientist of musical theory. I knew the man, knew his instruments andhis work. Only later, after he died, did I try to understandhis masterwork, Genesis of a Music, and I'm still trying to.

Partch is a Titan in a world that went for Pop. Partch is the Steve Jobs to Bill Gates. His music theory was the genesis for the work of Phillip Glass and John Cage, an attempt, like the masters of old, Kepler and Galileo, to set down a definitive tome on the theory of what music really IS, in the sense of its intervals and temperaments, what is mere dissonance, and whatis the voice of god.

Any serious musician who hasn't studied Genesis of a Music is missing the calculus of his art, the holy grail of his study.

This one book defines the universe of melodic and inspirational sound that we call music. If ever there was a work with some meat on its bones, Genesis of a Music is it. You must carry it with you night and day, and only take it out late at night, in your study carel in some dark library, sneaking passages like a secret compact, a cipher schrivened on the papyrus of Isis.

Then if you're lucky enough to find one of his old vinyls, you can say you've heard the bells pealing from heaven above. ... Read more
