Product Description
Abounding in the qualities Prokofiev considered the principal elements of his art (classicism, innovation, rhythmic vitality, lyricism, and sardonic humor), this collection features the dramatic and romantic Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 1; Sonata No. 2 in D minor, Op. 14, a masterpiece in four movements; Sonata No. 3 in A minor, Op. 28, a brilliant 7-minute score; and Sonata No. 4 in C minor, Op. 29, a complex, exhilarating three-movement work considered vintage Prokofiev.

Product Description

Prokofiev's first symphony, which he mischievously dubbed "Classical," is a sprightly piece based on the symphonic models of Haydn. The composer's synthesis of 20th-century harmonies and timbres with 18th-century structure and form has captivated audiences since its premiere in 1916. This is Prokofiev's most frequently performed symphonic work.

Product Description

After his training as a concert pianist, Prokofiev played this single-movement concerto for his final examination and received the coveted Rubinstein prize. The concerto opens with a grandiose theme that unifies the entire work. Four contrasting sections are fashioned into a three-part sonata design, climaxing in a brilliant solo cadenza.

Excerpt: Sergei Prokofiev set to work on his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16 in 1912 and completed it in 1913. Performing as solo pianist, he premiered the work on August 23 the same year at Pavlovsk. Most of the audience reacted intensely. The concerto's wild temperament left a positive impression on some of the listeners, whereas others were opposed to the jarring and modernistic sound ("To hell with this futurist music!"/ "What is he doing, making fun of us?"/ "The cats on the roof make better music!"). Today it is generally recognized as a masterpiece. The work is dedicated to the memory of Maximilian Schmidthof, a friend of Prokofiev's at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, who had committed suicide in April, after having written a farewell letter to Prokofiev. The original orchestral score was destroyed in a fire following the Russian Revolution. Prokofiev reconstructed and considerably revised the concerto in 1923, making the new version, in his own words, "less foursquare" and "slightly more complex in its contrapuntal fabric". The finished result, Prokofiev felt, was "so completely rewritten that it might almost be considered No. 4". (The Third Concerto had premiered in 1921). He premiered this revised version of the concerto in Paris on May 8, 1924 with Serge Koussevitzky conducting. It remains one of the most technically formidable piano concertos today. The work is scored for piano solo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, bass drum, snare drum, cymbals, tambourine and strings. It consists of four movements l...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2153948 ... Read more

Product Description

The magical surrealism of the famous opera The Love for Three Oranges is vividly depicted in this pictorial adaptation, designed to create an awareness of classical music among young children. Combining humor, sorrow, fantasy, and a bit of the grotesque, this fanciful story tells the tale of a prince whose melancholy can only be cured by a hearty laugh. In order to break through his gloom, the king plans a splendid feast and orders the court jester, Truffaldino, to appear and cheer up his son. When the prince finally lets out a guffaw, he incurs the wrath of Fata Morgana, a malicious witch who curses him with an undeniable passion for three oranges—oranges that he must chase to the ends of the earth.

Chapters: War and Peace, the Gambler, the Love for Three Oranges, the Fiery Angel, Semyon Kotko, Betrothal in a Monastery, Maddalena, the Giant, the Story of a Real Man. Excerpt:Sergei Prokofiev item Betrothal in a Monastery (original Russian title ) is an opera by Sergei Prokofiev , his sixth with an opus number. The libretto , in Russian , was by the composer and Mira Mendelson (his companion in later life), after Richard Brinsley Sheridan 's ballad opera libretto for Thomas Linley the younger 's The Duenna . Prokofiev began the work in 1940, and it was in rehearsal that year, but World War II halted production of the opera. The first performance did not occur until 3 November 1946 , at the Kirov Theatre with Boris Khaikin conducting. Commentators have noted that, given the context of its creation in the 1940s in the Soviet Union, this opera lacks any particular political or social comment, except perhaps for a scene involving drunken monks. In recent years, the opera has been performed in 1989 at the Wexford Festival and in 2006 at Glyndebourne and was performed at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia , Spain in 2008. Roles Role: Voice type: Premiere cast 3 November 1946, St Petersburg (Conductor: Boris Khaikin) Synopsis Act 1 Don Jerome intends his daughter Louisa to marry the wealthy fish merchant Mendoza. However, she loves instead Antonio, who is poor, though noble in spirit. Furthermore, Don Ferdinand, son of Don Jerome and prone to fits of jealousy, wants to marry Clara d'Almanza, who is a virtual prisoner of her stepmother. Act 2 Louise's Duenna suggests that she and Louise exhange clothes - the Duenna will then marry Mendoza and Louisa can elope with Antonio. Louisa finds her friend Clara hiding in a monastery from the ardour of her lover Ferdinand (Louisa's brother). Disguising... ... Read more
