5-0 out of 5 stars In my opinion, the most under-rated opera
This opera has all the marks of a good opera:

--exquisite chromatic harmony and counterpoint
--optimal pacing
--richness of melody and motifs
--variety of mood

In fact, I like it better than some of Puccini's better-known operas.

While you're at it, I also recommend the Scotto-Bergonzi recording. ... Read more

The latest in Phaidon Press Limited's fine 20th Century Composers series, this biography plows ground that's already been gone over many times, but does so very well. Like the rest of the books in this series, it's aimed at the more-than-casual but less-than-expert reader, and puts the composer's life and art into perspective, assisted by assorted photographs. This is a particularly good starting place for someone captured by Puccini's music dramas who's interested in how it all came about. There are no musical examples, which can be a positive or a negative depending on one's point of view and whether one reads music. New listeners may find the overly brief discography in the back of the book a useful guide.Product Description
With works such as La Bohème and Madame Butterfly, Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) created some of the world s most popular and widely performed operas. His colourful orchestrations, beautiful melodies, rare theatrical sensibility, and daring choices of subject matter combined to produce timeless stage works that continue to appeal to a broad audience. In this powerful biography, Conrad Wilson examines this great composer s works and the ways in which they were influences by his many relationships with women and his contradictory personality.

Giacomo Puccini is part of Phaidon s successful 20th Century Composers series, which presents authoritative and engaging biographies of the great creative musicians of our time, augmented by striking visual material and essential reference information. This edition of the book features a whimsical new cover by Jean-Jacques Sempé, the world-renowned illustrator and cartoonist. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Small print
Very small print puts this essentially in the "miniature score" category. Conductors will probably want to purchase the larger (9" x 12") hardcover from Dover, or search for a used Dover paperback (Dover's paperback scores of some of Ricordi's titles have gone out of print, suggesting some legal backstory.) ... Book Description
This is a collection from Ricordi, Puccini's original publisher, of 11 songs for voice and piano by the great opera composer Puccini. The songs span from his earliest student work to 1921. Though some are more intimate than his expansive opera arias, others are fully operatic in style. The 1888 song "Sole e amore" was later adapted into the Act III quartet in La boheme. The edition includes historical notes and English translations for study. ... Read more

Is there a more universally beloved opera than Madama Butterfly? Well, maybe the same composer's La Boheme-- but it's pretty close. The ageless, tragic story of the geisha who is so determined to be a "real American wife" that she abandons her own culture (and is abandoned by her family) and the loutish sailor who uses and drops her, has resurfaced in our day as Miss Saigon, but the original is by far superior in every respect. Puccini was a fine orchestrator, and here you can see how he achieved the uplifting effect of "Un bel di vedremo," Butterfly's song of hope and love. But remember that you'll need your own English translation; Dover scores are in the original language.Book Description

One of the greatest favorites of the Italian operatic repertoire, whose productions at London's Covent Garden in 1905 (featuring Enrico Caruso, among other luminaries of the day) and New York's Metropolitan Opera the following year first brought it fame. Reprinted complete and unabridged from the authoritative G. Ricordi edition.
