Sergey Vasil'evich Rakhmaninov) (1 April 1873 28 March 1943) was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. He was considered one of the finest pianists of his day and, as a composer, very nearly the last great representative of Russian late Romanticism in classical music. Early influences of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and other Russian composers gave way to a thoroughly personal idiom which included a pronounced lyricism, expressive breadth, structural ingenuity and a tonal palette of rich, distinctive orchestral colors. The piano features prominently in Rachmaninoff's compositional output, either as a solo instrument or as part of an ensemble. He made it a point to use his own skills as a performer to explore fully the expressive possibilities of the instrument. Even in his earliest works, he revealed a sure grasp of idiomatic piano writing and a striking gift for melody. Rachmaninoff at age 10 Rachmaninoff was born in 1873 in Semyonovo, near Veliky Novgorod, in north-western Russia. He was born into a noble family of Tatar descent, who had been in the service of the Russian tsars since the 16th century. His parents were both amateur pianists. When he was four, his mother gave him casual piano lessons, but it was his paternal grandfather, Arkady Alexandrovich Rachmaninoff, who brought Anna Ornatskaya, a teacher from Saint Petersburg, to teach Sergei in 1882. Ornatskaya remained for "two or three years", until the family home had to be sold to settle debts and the Rachmaninoffs moved to Moscow. Sergei studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory before moving alone to Moscow to study piano under Nikolai Zverev and Alexander Silot...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=99340 ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff (1 April 1873 [O.S. 20 March] - 28 March 1943), Russian composer and pianist, lived through tumultuous times. Born into an aristocratic, musical family in Semyonovo, near Veliky Novgorod, he was surrounded by music as a child and lived a comfortable life in Saint Petersburg. Moving into the house of his first official piano teacher, Nikolai Zverev, he transformed from an indulgent youth to an accomplished pianist. After completing his formal studies at the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied with Pyotr Tchaikovsky, he began to compose as a "Free Artist", although almost immediately he was faced with tribulation. The Rachmaninoff family was a part of an "old aristocracy", where all of the attitude but none of the money remained. The family, of Tatar descent, had been in the service of the Russian tsars since the 16th century, and had strong musical and military leanings. The composer's father, Vasily Arkadyevich (1841-1916), an amateur pianist and army officer, married Lyubov Petrovna Butakova (1853-1929), gained five estates as a dowry, and had three boys and three girls. ... Follow along with the score as you listen to some of the world's great music. Discover which instruments are playing and in what combination, and admire the orchestration of a master composer.Publications in this series include an interesting article about the composition and history of the featured piece, a helpful reference addressing transposing instruments, and a glossary of musical terms used in the score.Serge Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 is the quintessential romantic work of its type, serving up a host of memorable tunes balanced with plenty of spectacular pianism, making it one of the most popular piano concertos in the modern repertory. Unsmiling, stoic and barely moving at the keyboard, Rachmaninoff became known for his puritanically straightforward approach as a pianist, and for his beauty and warmth of tone. He wrote for his own legendarily enormous hands, which could span an interval of a thirteenth. His superior technical prowess made easy work of treacherous passagework, and consequently his own concertos present considerable challenges to pianists. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It works for what I needed it.
So far, this seems to be a fairly good edition of Rachmaninoff's Preludes. The print is clear, making the notes easier to read than in another version of a prelude that I had been using. However, there are no finger-number suggestions; fingering suggestions would have been helpful. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the definitive printed edition of the Second Symphony, premiered in 1908. The Second Symphony's full-blooded passion, both lyrical in expression and epic in scale, has made it one of Rachmaninoff's most popular works. The long, warmly-harmonized melodies are opulent but not cloying; the symphony's displays of passion are offset by dynamic rhythms which give them tension and urgency. ... Read more
