Product Description
Unquestionably the founding work of minimalism in musical composition, Terry Riley's In C (1964) challenges the standards of imagination, intellect, and musical ingenuity to which "classical" music is held.Only one page of score in length, it contains neither specified instrumentation nor parts. Its fifty-three motives are compact, presented without any counterpoint or evident form. The composer gave only spare instructions and no tempo. And he assigned the work a title that's laconic in the extreme. At the same moment of its composition, Elliott Carter was working on his Concerto for Piano, a work Stravinsky was to hail as a masterpiece.Having almost completed Laborinthus II, Luciano Berio would soon start the Sinfonia.Karlheinz Stockhausen had just finished Momente. In context of these other works, and of the myriad of compositional styles and trends which preceded them, In C stands the whole idea of musical "progress" on its head.

Forty years later, In C continues to receive regular performances every year by professionals, students, and amateurs, and has had numerous recordings since its 1968 LP premiere.Welcoming performers from a vast range of practices and traditions, from classical to rock to jazz to non-Western, these recordings range from the Chinese Film Orchestra of Shanghai -- on traditional Chinese instruments -- to the Hungarian 'European Music Project' group, joined by two electronica DJs manipulating the Pulse. In C rouses audiences while all the while projecting an inner serenity that suggests Cage's definition of music's purpose -- "to sober and quiet the mind, thus making it susceptible to divine influence."

Setting the stage for a most intriguing journey into the world of minimalism, Robert Carl's Terry Riley's In C argues that the work holds its place in the canon because of the very challenges it presents to "classical" music. He examines In C in the context of its era, its grounding in aesthetic practices and assumptions, its process of composition, presentation, recording, and dissemination.By examining the work's significance through discussion with performers, composers, theorists, and critics, Robert Carl explores how the work's emerging performance practice has influenced our very ideas of what constitutes art music in the 21st century. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, indispensable, and a fun read!
For me, this book was timely. I had just assembled an ensemble to perform In C (Salt Lake Electric Ensemble. Laptop orchestra with percussion: The Salt Lake Electric Ensemble Perform Terry Riley's In C).

Dr. Carl's analytical approach to the piece had an immense influence on the ensemble's approach to the piece. The story of the genesis of the piece was also extremely informative. This is a must-read book for serious musicians, and offers valuable insights into the genesis of musical minimalism.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pioneering Composition, An Important Book
The Oxford University Press series, "Studies in Musical Genesis, Structure, and Intepretation", lists compositions from classical, romantic, and impressionist Beethoven, Strauss, Wagner, Vaughan Williams, Debussy, and -- with a fierce thrust of modernity -- Terry Riley. His "In C", the pioneering milestone of minimalism, is the subject of this analytical history. Every version of "In C" (and there are many) is utterly unique, not because of a conductor's interpretation, as with the other, fully scored classical compositions, but because Riley did not state the instrumentation, exact entry and repetition number of the 53 sequential sectional musical phrases, or tempo. Arrangements of the piece are capricious, subject, as jazz, to the collective of musical director and ensemble. Hence, there can never be an ideal or standard interpretation or performance, not even Riley's own; all are exemplars. This extraordinary powerful piece is certainly worthy of a history, and Robert Carl, a composer himself, proves an able author and guide.

We learn much about the life of Terry Riley and his musical influences. La Monte Young, who already in the late 1950s was listening to Japanese gagaku and Indian ragas and John Coltrane, was colleague and mentor. He introduced Riley to cannabis and peyote, which instilled an openness of time. Together and with others of the San Francisco Tape Music Center, they experimented with looping and time-lag accumulation. Riley set himself the goal of transferring these electronic patterns and sounds to acoustic instrumentation, with his String Trio being an early development of repetition and pulse. "In C" itself was one of those grand creative moments when the composer holistically hears the composition in his mind, immediately sets to score some of the initial lines, and completes the work within a day.

Carl describes in loving detail the organizing and performance of the premiere on November 4, 1964. Remarkably, Steve Reich was a neighbor of Riley and played Wurlitzer organ at the event; the piece set himself on his own path, which led to the other masterpiece of minimalism, his "Music for 18 Musicians." We discover that two years before it became a staple of Fillmore Auditorium rock the music was accompanied by a light show! Also, there was a pre-Moog, pre-Arp device called the Chamberlin organ, with each pitch provided by a tape loop. Another fascinating tidbit was that Riley first envisioned its premiere at the Monterey Jazz Festival, and the reason why the work was not regarded as experimental or free jazz was because it was reviewed in glowing terms in the San Francisco Chronicle by the classical music critic.

I will not give away any more amazing information about this piece and its first recording for Columbia. You must obtain the slim book, a treasure chest, for yourself. While there is a full musicological analysis, the section of technical aspects may be easily skimmed by the general reader, as summaries provide the point. The book can be compared to the recent book on the making of Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" album, a landmark of jazz. This book belongs on the shelf of every lover of music, be it classical, jazz, or world, which the piece and its sensitivity enfold. It is a history of a musical revolution. It is also a history of one part of the Bay Area scene at the dawn of the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s.

5-0 out of 5 stars Landmark Study of a Landmark Piece
"In C" began as an experimental piece born in the radical west coast musical milieu of the early 1960's.And it is generally acknowledged as one of if not the "the" seminal work of what would later become known as "minimalism".
This conceptually brilliant as well as entertaining piece is one of the most performed pieces of new music. This is due in part to its being an "open score" meaning that it can be performed by any instruments or groups of instruments.
And now this piece is being more widely recognized as the masterpiece that it is.This book does a wonderful job of analyzing various perspectives on this music including its historical context, performance history and its musical structure. The analysis succeeds in conferring an academic legitimacy explaining why this music should now be considered a masterpiece to stand along with the likes of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, etc.
This is a lucidly written book which requires a little knowledge of music but you don't have to be a musical grad student to read and enjoy it.
If you are a fan of Terry Riley and/or minimalism you will find this both enoyable and informative.I am a die-hard fan and I learned a great deal from Robert Carl's expert analysis.Highly recommended!!

Forsaken-Immortal Surrender by Adrienne Kama

Ambrosia Kennedy is a vampire hunter on her first assignment. Her targets? The Goth band Forsaken, four incredibly sexy men. They use vampirism as part of their act. It's Ambrosia's job to find out if it's really just an act.Her main focus is the band's lead singer Umberto. He is so sinfully sexy and darkly erotic that it's a wonder Ambrosia is able to keep her wits about her and gather the necessary data on the band.In the blink of an eye, though, Ambrosia goes from hunting to being hunted.Umberto wants the sexy Ambrosia, and he will have her. She finds herself powerless against his skill and charm.Soon though, Ambrosia doesn't want to fight, she wants to explore these new found feelings. But there are bigger, badder things out there determined to stop this new relationship from developing and to stop Umberto and the rest of the band from breathing! It will take all of their strength and wits to overcome this!!

Unparalleled by Lisa G.Riley

For years Enrique Thomas Rivera has been dreaming of an ebony-skinned beauty. She's been a part of his life since she was two years old and he was five. He's grown up with her, watched her become a controlled, disciplined, stunning woman.Soon the dreams turn from innocent childhood antics to torrid, passionate lovemaking. Enrique despairs of ever meeting his other half, the woman who completes him. She's been in his dreams for years and he doesn't even know her NAME!Edirs Perseveranth has had to control everything within her life ever since she was thrust into the role of adult at a tender young age when her mother was killed in the line of duty. Now a law enforcement agent herself, Edirs will use whatever resources she can discreetly find to discover the truth of her mother's murder and bring the killers to justice.Even if it means leaving her familiar world of Parallel Plus and going to the world of Sub Parallel where she suspects her mother's murderers are hiding.Meeting her dream man, Enrique in the flesh was not something she could have ever begun to anticipate. Can she find her mother's murderers, get her sister out of trouble yet again AND carry on her relationship with Enrique in real life as opposed to their late night dreams?? If there's a will, there's a way...and both Enrique and Edris will it, so maybe it will happen.

Pleasure Principle by Kimberly Kaye Terry

Arlinda Nyoni is a struggling boutique owner with hot fashions. When she is approached to create the designs for an upcoming charity event she jumps at the chance, but the opportunity comes with a twist.Instead of dealing with the founder of the charity, Mariana St. John, she will instead deal with Mariana's brother Samuel St. John.Little does Arlinda know that Sam took one look at her petite frame and coca-colored skin and was lost, at that moment plans were changed and he appointed himself the point of contact between Mariana and Arlinda. He wants Arlinda with every fiber of his being. Now to convince her to let down the walls she's erected and to earn her trust and love because, quite frankly, he will accept nothing less than everything. She is beautiful to Sam and everyone around her, her beauty radiates from the inside out making her glow. Now it's Sam's mission to show her that there's so much more to her than her looks. Will she let him in?Or will she sabotage this wonderful relationship like she does all the rest?

Wicked Delights is an anthology of wicked proportions! Each story is a tender love story swaddled in deep erotic heat.I tried to print this book out but the stories were so hot it short circuited my poor printer!!

This group of stories starts off with Kate Hill's weretiger story Tamed By The Tiger.I admire Sanjay's determination to save his son's life even though he clearly knows there was a puzzle piece missing in the story that his son was telling him.If it was as simple as his son claims, the Wakened Veils would not have marked him for death.Sanjay has a smoldering intensity about him, which comes out when he confronts Raine.Raine is dedicated to her job of bringing wrong doing men to justice and protecting the women that need her help. The heat between these two flows like a rolling heat wave.Raine is a Succubus who has not fed in a long time, as such, I expected her to jump Sanjay's bones but instead something far more intense happens.Their relationship gets emotional; emotional entanglement is a thing Raine has long avoided because of her past dealings with men.But when she realizes that her feelings for Sanjay are not going away and neither is he, the ball really gets rolling. Passionate love, stunningly hot sex, and secrets that MUST be told...Tamed By The Tiger is a great start to this hot anthology!

Next in line is Adrienne Kama's Forsaken-Immortal Surrender.I totally enjoyed reading about Ambrosia.I can tell right off that she is new to her job, but well skilled and determined to do a good job despite being green. Ambrosia's assignment is to act the girlfriend to the lead singer of the band Forsaken. This pairs her up with Umberto a vampire over 300 years old. Little does she know, she is no match for him, and Umberto proves that to her in a blinding moment of startling intensity.Darkly sensuous and smolderingly erotic; if I were in Ambrosia's position I would have handed in my badge immediately. Theirs is a relationship full of complications: she's a vampire hunter attracted to the very vampire she needs to kill, he's a vampire attracted to the woman that is part of a group sent to kill him. This story rocks! I really can't say more about it without giving spoilers. What I can say is that Umberto and Ambrosia's joining, is just the TIP of the iceberg in the intensity of this story. Towards the end of this book, I was rocking back and forth with my fist in my mouth, things happened that I did not expect to happen. Talk about secrets! Can't go wrong with Forsaken-Immortal Surrender.I surrender! I surrender!

Unparalleled by Lisa G. Riley is an enjoyable read.Introducing me to Enrique and Edris at early ages.I loved them from the start.Enrique proved himself to be an alpha male while young and only more so when he became an adult.Edris loses her precociousness when she gets older making her rather rigid and not as fun loving as when she was in her youth.Enrique gifted with "third-eye" sight sees things he does not understand, right down to dreaming and "seeing" Edris but never knowing her name. As the two grow older in their parallel universes the dreams go from childhood playfulness and experiences to adult passionate lovemaking. I want a dream man like that!!I wanted to know if the heat that Edris and Enrique experience in their dreams, transfers into real life.I wanted to know who killed Edris' mother...so many questions!Ms. Riley answered them all, even showing me a side of Edirs that was there, but hidden. I love Edris and found myself hoping that she would get to meet Enrique in real life because she needs that, she needs something that would bring something out of her that she's buried deep. This was a good story, and a great addition to the anthology.

Rounding out this great group of stories is Kimberly Kaye Terry's Pleasure Principle.Unlike the previous three stories neither of the main characters has any paranormal powers, but they are in no way lacking in anything.Arlinda is a woman who creates fantastic designs and owns her own boutique but in spite all of this, she has a lack of self-confidence that she keeps hidden deep within, only allowing her best friend Maya to see sometimes. When she meets the sexy Samuel she is ready to jump his bones, but doubts and insecurities surface making her unsure of herself. I can relate to Arlinda; we all experience insecurities and doubts. As Sam becomes more and more enamored of Arlinda he begins to chip away at her defenses. I read the story mumbling and fussing the whole time. I wanted to shake Arlinda and tell her to ease up just a little bit on emotionally fighting Sam or she would lose the best man she's ever come across.Sam is just hot and I must say the man has got the self-control of a saint! How he did the things, oh the things, he did to and with Arlinda I don't know. The erotic heat and intensity in this story is enough to rival that of an active volcano. At times I had to put the story down for a moment to compose myself and continue reading.Following the journey of Arlinda coming out of her shell, the journey of Sam's efforts to earn her trust and love made this an excellent end to one of the hottest and most enjoyable anthologies I've read in some time.

Product Description

You may think Houdini is a strange name for a hamster, but if you've ever heard of the late Great Houdini, the most amazing escape-artist of all time, you'll understand how I got my name. I'm proud to say that there hasn't been a cage built that can hold me. I can climb, dive, wriggle, squeeze, or gnaw my way out of any prison they came up with. I have to admit that sometimes freedom leads to a bit of trouble--like getting cornered by the cat, ending up in the dog's mouth, or being trapped in the freezing cold of a dark refrigerator. But I won't be stopped! With a whole big world out there to explore, who wants to be held prisoner in a hamster cage?

Since all mammals seem to have come down from a few rodent like
animals, an intelligent hamster is possible:
just not real probable?
Again the story is well written, but just isn't one I like all that well.
Possibly because I don't like hamsters?
The idea of a dog not killing a prey animal
is pretty unique.
How many generations of litters of six or more before you are over run
by hamsters?
I don't like the book.

I Houdini is a book about a genious hamster who longs for freedom. He's called that because he can escape the very best made cages.

I thinkthe author, Lynne Reid Banks wants you to know that you can do any thing you if you're determined and keep trying.

I liked the way the hamster thought and the way he despised other hamsters. I also liked the way the author discribed the book. It was full of suspense all the way through, and was easy to understand.

Risk managers or security professionals will benefit if not for a refresher on the end-to-end demands of mitigating travel threats, then to educate more specifically what types of scenarios will be faced by your average traveling executive.

Great reference material or training development tool but not for everyone.

If you have never been out of Greenbow, Alabama in your entire life, this book is just the thing for you! If you have the least bit of research capability or can spell Google, you can find every idea in this book someplace else for free. It is a collection of utterly obvious ideas and offers nothing novel. Some of the suggestions are flat wrong and otherwise risky. Example: leave your passport in the hotel safe. Bad idea. Quite a few countries require foreigners to keep their passport on their person at all times. If you are going to travel internationally to a new country, do yourself a favor and do the research the old fashioned way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fox's Feud

The third "Farthing Wood" novel brings a more familiar tale to the unwilling leader of the Farthing Wood animals: grief and vengeance. The start of the feud between the foxes of the park is actually quite shocking, even for what is essentially a children's book.
