Deadly Storms...for Younger Readers!
Throughout history, tornadoes and hurricanes have brought about horrendous death and destruction worldwide. Gary Jeffrey examines TORNADOES & SUPERSTORMS in this 2007 entry in Rosen Publishing's 'Graphic Natural Disasters' series. Like others in the series, it's intended for readers in the 9-12 age group.

After four pages of text and photographs detailing the nature/history of tornadoes and superstorms, the book presents Graphic Novel stories on the Tri-State Tornado of 1925, the Halloween Storm of 1991 and the 1997 Jarrell Killer Tornado. Illustrator Terry Riley does a good job of presenting the reality of such storms. People in peril are depicted but the presentation isn't sensationalistic. Readers in the 9-12 group should be able to handle the material. The book wraps up with a section on weather warning technology, a glossary and a 'For Further Information' section.

TORNADOES & SUPERSTORMS does an effective, dramatic job of introducing those deadly winds to younger readers. Recommended. ... Read more

The Fox Cub Bold

This fourth instalment sees a young cub wild in the "real world" for the first time after voluntarily segregating himself from his friends and his father, "the Farthing Wood fox", whose shadow continues to hang over him.

Impressively Dann manages to draw immediate focus to a single character and his few acquaintances after spending so much time on the huge Farthing Wood cast.He does so with grace and clarity, creating a story that presents itself with crystal clarity whilst prompting strong emotional responses in the reader.It's hard to believe that a fox's circumstances could illicit such powerful responses!

The protagonist is superbly draw and rounded in a way that I don't see even in most adult fiction.You'll be swept along in a wonderful, funny, and very sad story that has always been my favourite of the series.

Surviving the Savage Sea...For Younger Readers!
Part of Rosen Publishing's 'Graphic Survival Stories' series, DEFYING DEATH AT SEA relates three tales of survival at sea. Though intended for readers 9-12, Gary Jeffrey's book could be enjoyed by teens and adults as well.

In this 2010 Rosen release, Jeffrey and artist Terry Riley first present the experiences of Lieutenant William Bligh and 18 of his crew from HMS Bounty who were cast adrift in a small boat by mutineers led by Fletcher Christian. In an amazing feat of navigation and endurance, Bligh and crew sailed over 3,600 miles to a safe port, losing only one man on the journey. Next comes the soul-crushing experience of merchant sailor Poon Lim who survived the torpedoing of SS Ben Lomond only to endure 133 days along on a life raft before being rescued. The final story covered is the July 1945 sinking of cruiser USS Indianapolis and the terrifying experiences of her surviving crew who endured ongoing shark attacks before rescuers arrived three days later. Although 880 men survived the sinking, only 320 were left alive to be saved.

Jeffrey and Riley do an effective job of presenting the horror inherent in each story. Several images - men eating birds and fish raw, a human body cut in half by sharks, etc. - may be a little graphic for the target audience. The book also includes informative sections on the earth's oceans, survival at sea, other notable survival stories, a glossary and 'For Further Reading' suggestions.

Although the events depicted in DEFYING DEATH AT SEA were sometimes horrifying, the poor souls involved triumphed in the end. Their experiences as described and depicted in this book should interest readers of all ages. Recommended. ... Read more
