The major English-language biography of the great composer.
This is an excellent introduction to the works of one of the greatest French composers of the 20th century.It originated as a PhD thesis, and an academic bias is discernable, mostly in the depth of the musical analyses and the emphasis on the music rather than the man.Nonetheless, the book isn't just for academics -- it's easy to read and entertaining.

The only major problem with the book is its age (early 60's).Despite this, it remains THE English-language source about Albert Roussel ... Read more

A slim but valuable resource.
This book was written in 1947 for the tenth anniversary of Roussel's death, and its age shows in several ways.For example, a number of works weren't available to Demuth for one reason or another, or he had seen only piano reductions.More importantly, Demuth's judgments about certain works have simply not been borne out by the history of the last 50 years.The opera Padmavati is not on a par with Wagner.The orchestral suite Evocations is not as important as a Beethoven symphony.

Despite this, there is much of interest here.It is the best English-language source of biographical information, for example.Furthermore, Demuth is thorough and entertaining, making this second only to Basil Deane's biography for those who do not read French.

But most of all, for those of us who love Roussel and feel he is underrated, seeing him compared to Beethoven and Wagner is an indescribable thrill ... Read more

Il s'agit d'une œuvre de maturité, à peu près contemporaine de sa troisième symphonie. Elle décrit l'enlèvement d'Ariane par le dieu Bacchus et leurs amours. L'œuvre originale, en deux actes, a été créée par l'orchestre de l'opéra de Paris sous la direction de Philippe Gaubert le 22 mai 1931 avec une chorégraphie de Serge Lifar et des décors de Giorgio de Chirico. Roussel en tira par la suite deux suites pour orchestre, chacune correspondant à un acte du ballet. The comic operetta was a departure from his earlier works which were all of a serious nature. Roussel acknowledged that the works of composers Arthur Honegger and Jacques Ibert had influenced him to pursue writing a comic opera as they had been successful both critically and financially. He described the operetta as "a sort of opérette-bouffe whose characters are almost entirely grotesque and who should be played without any fear of exaggerating their effect".
