Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Camille Saint-saëns," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Camille Saint-saëns in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Camille Saint-saëns when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Camille Saint-saëns, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Of Saint-Saëns' five great piano concerti, this may be termed the grandaddy of them all; it has remained unflinchingly in the repertoire since its premiere over 100 years ago. Affectionately known as the concerto that 'starts like Bach and ends like Offenbach,' it is an intense and carefully crafted work in the composer's inimitable style, with his trademark orchestrations. A thrilling experience for player and listener alike, this is one of our most requested titles and finally it is yours to accompany.Performed by Iliana Todorova, pianoAccompaniment: Plovdiv Philharmonic OrchestraConductor: Nayden TodorovIncludes Compact Disc and Printed Music Score. Stirring symphony, widely regarded as Saint-Saëns’ major orchestral work, is one of the few to incorporate the organ as featured instrument. It bears all the hallmarks of the composer’s fluent mastery of orchestral composition. The work is reprinted in this edition from an authoritative full-score edition published by Durand et Schoenewerk, Paris.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing score for an amazing piece
The full score for CSS's organ symphony is very well arranged, easy to read, and is of good quality. It is really a steal at that price and is good enough for review or study.I used it to transcribe the piece to another instrument. For an orchestra you would need to have the piece-wise score for each instrument which obviously costs much more, but this is a good alternative for simpler applications, is great for a conductor or for transcribing, and is perfect for the casual reader.Very durable too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Organ Score Smashes!
In an era where good manuscripts are expensive and somewhat difficult to obtain, Dover has made available the consummate example of organ and symphony in harmony. With easy readablity and the trademark 'lay-flat'binding, Dover allows easy access to all parts of the score with littleconfusion.A must for all who enjoy listening to this piece as well asthose who study scores and instumental relationships. ... Product Description
An Excerpt from the book-

In bygone days I was often told that I had two mothers, and, as a matter
of fact, I did have two--the mother who gave me life and my maternal
great-aunt, Charlotte Masson. The latter came from an old family of
lawyers named Gayard and this relationship makes me a descendant of
General Delcambre, one of the heroes of the retreat from Russia. His
granddaughter married Count Durrieu of the _Académie des Inscriptions et
Belles-Lettres_. My great-aunt was born in the provinces in 1781, but
she was adopted by a childless aunt and uncle who made their home in
Paris. He was a wealthy lawyer and they lived magnificently.

My great-aunt was a precocious child--she walked at nine months--and
she became a woman of keen intellect and brilliant attainments. She
remembered perfectly the customs of the _Ancien Régime_, and she enjoyed
telling about them, as well as about the Revolution, the Reign of
Terror, and the times that followed. Her family was ruined by the
Revolution and the slight, frail, young girl undertook to earn her
living by giving lessons in French, on the pianoforte--the instrument
was a novelty then--in singing, painting, embroidery, in fact in
everything she knew and in much that she did not. If she did not know,
she learned then and there so that she could teach. Afterwards, she
married one of her cousins. As she had no children of her own, she
brought one of her nieces from Champagne and adopted her. This niece was
my mother, Clemence Collin. The Massons were about to retire from
business with a comfortable fortune, when they lost practically
everything within two weeks, in a panic, saving just enough to live
decently. Shortly after this my mother married my father, a minor
official in the Department of the Interior. My great-uncle died of a
broken heart some months before my birth on October 9, 1835. My father
died of consumption on the thirty-first of the following December, just
a year to a day after his marriage.

A great way to introduce children to classical music.

America’s first Children's Poet Laureate has written all-new verses to accompany the composer Camille Saint-Saëns’s The Carnival of the Animals, and the illustrator of the Harry Potter books has turned these rollicking rhymes into a picture-book fun fest. Included is a CD of the music and of Jack Prelutsky reading the verses. A note to parents and teachers by Judith Bachleitner, head of the music department at the prestigious Rudolf Steiner School in New York City, suggests ways preschoolers can act out the music—tromp like an elephant, hop like a kangaroo, glide like a swan—or, for older children, be creatively inspired by this joyful work. ... Product Description
The animals are having a carnival, and the guests are arriving. There's the majestic lion, the braying mules, the dancing elephant, and the bouncy kangaroos. Even the fossils join in with a fast and rattly dance. Everyone is invited!

Nearly 150 years ago, the composer Camille Saint-Saëns was asked by his pupils to write a musical joke for them. He wrote the Carnival of the Animals, a piece people enjoyed so much that it has now become one of Saint-Saëns's most famous works.

This accessible commentary, in a picture-book format, helps children follow each section of Saint-Saëns's classic piece while they listen to the CD. Whimsical illustrations, a simple text, and evocative melodies create an ideal introduction for young children to the world of classical music.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
The best "Carnival of the Animals" book I have found yet. Filled with tons of great background information for young and old, while still interesting to read, listen, and follow along.

3-0 out of 5 stars good book, good music but CD issues
I am a music teacher who teaches general music to grades K-8.Every year I take a couple classes to teach the kids about Camille Saint-Saens and the Carnival of Animals so I'm pretty familiar with a lot of the music and was excited to purchase this book and CD.

The book itself is great for the lower grades, the music is great for all of them. The CD has nice sound. However I noticed the book gives track numbers for each movement on the CD.But the track numbers are wrong.

The book has listed Hens and Roosters on track number 2. When actually only Hens is track 2 and Roosters is track 3, which then pushes all the other titles up a track (ex. Mules is track 4, not 3 as listed in the book). Also some of these titles are not accurate as Saint-Saens originally named them.

The other problem with the CD is that the Carnival of Animals goes up to track 15 as the Finale. After that there are several other tracks, 16-21 on the CD which are not mentioned anywhere in the book. The CD cover itself mentions 3 other pieces, (SYmphony No. 3, Danse Macabre, and a piece from Samson and Delilah...all famous pieces by Saint=Saens). But they are not listed in any particular order, none of those tracks sounded like the Danse Macabre that I've heard, and there are still 3 other tracks which are not named or listed anywhere on the CD, in the book, or anywhere in the package. So unless you're a Saint-Saens fanatic theres no way to know what they are.

So while I like the book and the music itself, the CD presents a lot of confusion.Be forewarned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carnival of the Animals
This is great book and CD for small children and elementary school age. I played a selection or 2 every day in elementary music class and the kids enjoyed them. We read the short description of the animals and listened to the different animals. The students kept wanting to replay them and listen to more. The pictures are colorful and get their attention. We danced and moved to the music; we listened to the different instruments and they pretended they were playing in the orchestra or they pretended they were moving like the swan or the fish in the aquarium or the kangaroos, etc.I bought 3 more books and CD's for my grandchildren ages 2-10.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it! Love it!
This is a great book and cd that encourages children to understand and enjoy a fantastic piece of classical music by relating it to things they know and love. Amazon offered a good price and sent it quickly and in perfect condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Guess the animal...
After listening to each piece, we tried to guess what the animal was depending on the music that was played. Fantastic! ... Read more

Product Description
This English edition of Jean-Michel Nectoux's collection of the complete correspondence of Saint-Saens and Faure features some 130 letters spanning the period from 1862-1920. Immensely significant to the study of French music, these letters throw light upon one of the longest-surviving friendships between two composers in the history of music. They also contain frank exchanges of views on such topics as the music of Wagner, Berlioz, Debussy, Franck and others, the state of musical education in France, and other important artistic figures of fin de siecle Paris including Puvis de Chavannes, Rodin and Fremiet. Barrie Jones's skilful translation of this important body of correspondence captures the often playful, casual, but always stimulating language of both composers. These letters are frequently the sole source for dating certain compositions or discovering projects that were started but then abandoned. They constitute a primary source for appreciation of Saint-Saens's and Faure's compositions, opinions, and working practices. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable book
This is one of very few books recognising the special features of French music of the Romantic Era, and in particular the important contribution of music written by Camille Saint-Saens. Following the introduction, the firstchapter offers a 32-page insight into the composer's character and life. This, alone, is a rare encounter and comes eight years before the detailedbiographies by Rees and Studd. The following ten chapters are split intotwo sections dealing with the "Concertante" works by Saint-Saensand the French Solo Concerto around the same time. Both sections arelogically structured and equipped with references, comparisons andexamples, while works by Lalo, Dubois, Faure, Franck, Chausson and Debussy,to mention but a few, are additionally addressed. The interested reader cangain even more knowledge by consulting the appendices complementing themain chapters. In summary, for anyone keen to explore French romantic musicthis is a valuable book, which has been extensively researched and clearlywritten. ... Read more

Product Description
Camille Saint-Saëns began as a child prodigy and was acclaimed in his lifetime as the incarnation of French genius. His was one of the longest careers in musical history, stretching from the traditions of Beethoven to the innovations of the twentieth century, including one of the earliest film scores. As a virtuoso pianist he achieved international fame, while Liszt proclaimed him the world's greatest organist. A prolific composer, there is much more to him than his best-known work, the witty Carnival of the Animals, of which he forbade performances in his lifetime. Among his most notable achievements are the opera Samson et Delila and the Organ Symphony, while the Danse Macabre, second piano concerto and first cello concerto remain much loved. As a young man, he supported the 'new music' of Liszt, Wagner and Berlioz and introduced the symphonic poem into French music. He championed an up-and-coming generation of French composers, most notably Fauré, and played a unique part in transforming French taste from grand opera and operetta to the classical forms of symphony and chamber music, at the same time reviving interest in the music of Bach and Rameau. His personal life was combative, tragic and surrounded by rumour: as a boy during the Revolution of 1848, serving as a National Guard in the war of 1870, and eventually becoming something of an icon of the Third Republic, used in diplomacy as a symbol of French culture. This fascinating book (Chatto & Windus 1999) places his long and controversial career in a turbulent period when music, no less than politics, was undergoing sensational and often stormy change. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Ugh
The options for research on Saint-Saëns aren't much, so this book nearly soured me on the subject altogether. It's utterly unreadable.I recommend scouring libraries and used bookstores for James Harding's 1965 _Saint-Saëns and His Circle_, which, while hardly exhaustive, is at least readable and useful in getting a sense of the man.

2-0 out of 5 stars Saint-Saens Agonistes
As a professional in the opera world (I've been at it too long to call it a business), I had a very good reason to buy and read this biography...the only one widely available in English these days.(I could only wish that some of the earlier sources in Rees's bibliography had been available to me.)

I found Rees's style both disjunct and pedantic...an accomplishment of sorts. In the facts of The Life, presented prosaically, for a composer whose existence was anything BUT prosaic, Rees left us hungry for substantiation.(His footnoting was mostly just irritating.)Certain events and trends in The Life, about which we would gladly know more--the controversial, virtually sensational dissolution of the composer's marriage, for instance, were glossed over, swept under the carpet or conveniently ignored.

Rees's technique of analysis of each work as he encounters it was perfunctory at best; is this guy really a musician? The writing has a kind of amateurish fervor to it, which might have been charming in other hands; but based on this work alone, I would quite simply not delve further into this composer's life or works, were it not for the fact that I'm about to be involved in a production of SAMSON ET DALILA.

This was a major disappointment, and all of us interested in the voluminous output of this protean figure--hey folks, why HAVE only two of his operas been recorded professionally?--will simply have to wait for someone better at this task.Perhaps Rees didn't find all that much to admire about Saint-Saens; but it doesn't incline me to want to read his life of Edward German (now THERE'S a Minor Composer).Oh well...onward and upward into the future.Saint-Saens is ripe for rediscovery, but Brian Rees may have nipped it in the bud...for a while. Most opera enthusiasts I know, certainly in the professional echelons, are tired of Mr. and Mrs. Gheorghiu, Andrea Bocelli, Charlotte Church and the like.Enough of the endless BOHEME entries in Schwann (oh all right, I think it's a great piece too!); give us a chance to hear some Saint-Saens that set the musical world on fire...or at least kindled respectable bonfires...in its time.

2-0 out of 5 stars A calendar, not a life
Although I was truly interested in this subject, getting through all 485 pages of this book was pretty much drudgery. It's hard to believe the author has had much writing experience, particularly in the fields of music or biography.Saint-Saens never came alive for me, never became a person I could like or dislike, or even care about.Instead, the author provided an endless calendar of the composer's life -- on the order of Tuesday he went here, Wednesday he did this.We learn of his petty jealousies, but little else of the real person, whose life probably included many mysteries beyond the author's grasp.

And there is little or no critical evaluation of the vast majority of the works of this enormously prolific composer, nor any real discussion of his inspirations or working methods.Poor Saint-Saens comes across as a rather fuddy-duddy, petty workaholic.

In addition, the book is poorly written: the author evidently knows nothing of the rules of paragraphing, commonly including widely divergent topics in a single, unending paragraph. This is both confusing and irritating.

Finally, the omission of a list of the composer's works as a separate appendix is unforgiveable!True, the Index does list works, but only as they are mentioned in the text, with no assurance that this listing is accurate or complete.I'll look for a better and more complete biography! ...
