Product Description
This is the first book to examine Schubert's songs as active shaping forces in the culture of their era rather than as mere reflections of it. Responding to rising new forms of social organisation, Schubert discovered that songs could serve as a medium for shuffling and reshuffling the basic building blocks of identity and desire, especially sexual desire. His songs project a kaleidoscopic array of unexpected human types, all of whom are eligible for a sympathetic response, even the strangest and most disconcerting. Schubert sought to validate these subjective types without subordinating them to a central social or sexual norm. The book describes and contextualises this process and tracks it concretely in a wide variety of songs. Combining close attention to both music and poetry, the book addresses both specialists and non-specialists in a lively, accessible style unburdened by excessive jargon. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Yet another obscure intellectual romp with Lawrence Kramer
Lawrence Kramer's latest book suffers the same disease as his other books and articles on classical music suffer.Much of the points he tries to make are lost in the highfalutin language he enjoys using. The topics of his book are complex already, and he doesn't make it any easier on the reader to understand by writing in such a distanced manner. While this is a text aimed for scholars in the field, Kramer could have broadened his audience by making it more accesible for the apprentices, not just the masters.Kramer's writing seems almost exclusive, as if he is holding his knowledge just above the reach of most people, and enjoying himself as he does this as well.

Getting past the language, many of Kramer's points are not supported by a wealth of evidence. He makes points that lack credibility without enough support.Kramer seems to expect the readers to take him at his word, which is a dangerous thing to do, considering that he is far from the final word on Schubert.Kramer's opinions are NOT enough to make opinion fact, though he seems to think this is the case.

If you buy this book for leisure or for class, be sure to read carefully, or else you'll get tricked into believeing Kramer's assertions.

Using big words to describe a complex topic does not magically transform his opinions into fact, nor does it make a scholar more scholarly. It compromises what possibly could have been an interesting book, dooming it before it even started. ... Read more

Product Description
The Vienna in which Franz Schubert lived for the thirty-one years of his life was a city of music, dance, and coffeehouses-a center of important achievements in the arts. But it was also the capital of an empire that was constantly at war in the composer`s youth and that became a police state during his maturity. Now, in the bicentennial of Schubert`s birth, this elegantly written and richly illustrated book paints a vivid picture of the culture, society, and politics ofSchubert`s Vienna. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Schubert's Vienna Fascinates
I picked-up this book by accident as I had never heard of the Aston Magna Academy. I certainly know about them now. They have produced a book that is a must read for those interested in either Vienna in the late 18th and early 19th century or Franz Schubert & the arts. It is a collection of essays by prominent experts arrayed in three sections;Politics and Social Life, Musical Life and The Other Arts. These different essays give the reader a broad view of the times and influences that gave us the extraordinary music that we enjoy today. A bibliography at the end of each essay points to further resources. This is a fascinating and effective format for presenting history.

Anne Frank wrote "If I read a book that impresses me, I have to take myself firmly in hand before I mix with other people; otherwise they would think my mind rather queer". This is the very sensation I have whenclosing this book.

Schubert's Vienna is a must-read for anyone who wishesto truly understand the man behind the music. This wonderfully written andmasterfully edited book details nearly every aspect of life in Viennaduring the time of Franz Schubert. The age is defined historically, politically, socially, and even culturally (referring to the other arts). This makes the book an engaging read even for those who have only a casualinterest in the composer but are interested in the city of Vienna or theRomantic era in general. A scholarly work that can be enjoyed by nearly anylevel student, I defy you to walk away without a sigh of nostalgia for thebeauty of Schubert's Vienna.

Product Description
Schubert's choice of poets has traditionally come under fire for the preponderance of mediocre talent, and yet many of these writers were highly esteemed in their day. The author has chosen four such poets--Gabriele von Baumberg, Theodor Körner, Johann Mayrhofer, and Ernst Schulze--in order to reexamine their lives, works, and Schubert's music to their verse. All four poets were vivid inhabitants of a vivid era, and their tribulations afford us added insight into the upheavals, the manners and mores, of their day.Amazon.com Review
The author, a professor of musicology at Notre DameUniversity, examines the lives, times, and oeuvre of four poets whoseverses were set by Schubert: Theodor Koener, Ernst Schulze, JohannMayhofer and Gabriele von Bamberg. The book, while somewhat esotericfor the general reader, offers valuable insights into the poets'styles and the events that shaped their lives and their work. If youhave a strong interest in Schubert and his time, you will find this avery useful volume indeed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars short Schubert songs
I'm learning some short Schubert songs
for my Aural class in a conservatory.
They are short and enjoyable.
I would love if Dover puts translation on each song
instead of putting all translation together at the back.

5-0 out of 5 stars most of the best of schubert's lieder
This volume includes the three major Schubert song cycles. It's not as usable or legible as the old Peters edition, but it is much more available and cheaper. The music of course is pure heaven, from the world-famous "Serenade" to the grim and lovely ``Winterreise'' cycle to the "Swan songs" that end with perhaps Schubert's loveliest song of all, the "Taubenpost;" that was also the last song he wrote. You can hum them, sing them, strum them on your guitar or piano and you'll be a better human being. For low voice, with adequate English translations in the back of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for the price
If you are looking for an amazingly inexpensive way to augment your score library, Dover is the way to do it.The lack of measure numbers in many cases is not ideal, but to me, the savings more than makes up for it.When preparing for a rehearsal situation, it is relatively painless to take five minutes and number the measures myself. An inconvenience, to be sure, but spending $40 or more for an edition with measure numbers and rehearsal letters is the greater evil, as far as I'm concerned.I highly recommend this edition to vocal students, teachers, and anyone who simply wants to listen and read along to one of the greatest song-smiths ever to live.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Singers and Scholars: Schubert's Song Cycles
This is the Dover edition of Franz Schubert's two song cycles on the poetry of Wilhelm Mueller -- Die Schoene Muellerin and Die Winterreise -- plus the collection of songs known as Schwanengesang, which is not a truecycle but rather a group of songs written by Schubert near the end of hisshort life (d. 1828), packaged as cycle posthumously by his publisher.Ifyou are interested in art song, this plus a few other volumes -- forinstance Schubert's Goethe Lieder, also available from Dover -- are anessential aid to enjoyment and understanding. One down side is that thisis the usual Dover repackaging of an older source, and as such lacks thingssuch as measure numbers and Deutsch catalogue numbers that would be usefulto have. For the money, however, this is an essential value. Englishtranslations of the poems are included in the back of the volume. ... Read more

Product Description
Franz Schubert set 80 of Goethe's poems to music; the resulting lieder are masterpieces ofthe song literature. Whitton discusses the cultural background of the era, describing Goethe's interest in music and musicians, and Schubert's surprisingly wide knowledge of contemporary literature. Each of the songs is treated, with translation and discussion of the background of both text and music. HARDCOVER.Amazon.com Review
"In every age there exists a secret bond between kindredspirits," said Robert Schumann. This book postulates such a bond ofkinship between Goethe and Schubert, thoughthey never met or communicated. Kenneth Whitton, a professor emeritus of European Studies at Bradford University, has written extensively on the German Lied; his knowledge about the two men's lives and works, and about German political and literary history, is encyclopedic. Whitton's first chapter is an account of the Lied before Schubert. The second deals with every aspect of Goethe's life, focusing on his relationship with the musicians of his time, notably his favorite song composers Zelter and Reichart, who allegedly most influenced his musical taste. The chapter also looks at Goethe's lifelong relationships with women, which, though egotistical, irresponsible, and reckless, led to exquisite love poems and guilt-inspired "self-confessional" writings.

The chapter on Schubert, quoting both earlier "imaginativerecreations" and recent scholarship, similarly dwells extensively onhis amorous adventures, his drinking and smoking in badcompany. However, Whitton also refutes some popular misconceptions, citing letters and contemporary accounts: Schubert, far from being anuntutored rustic willing to compose any text regardless of quality, was well-read and discriminating in his literary tastes; and Goethe, far from being unmusical or insensitive to music, felt that music wasindispensable to life and to poetry. Despite the artists' vastdifferences in social, financial, and personal circumstances, Whittondiscovers factors that could, and should, have brought themtogether. For example, Goethe, who surprisingly wrote texts forseveral Singspiele, never found a composer to provide suitable music;Schubert, who always dreamed of writing an opera, never found a goodlibrettist.

Above all, Goethe's poetry had a profound influence on Schubert. Itinspired his earliest and some of his best songs. He returned to itthroughout his life, setting 80 poems to music, many of them severaltimes. He was probably the first composer who truly understoodthem. Indeed, Whitton claims that Schubert's music made Goetheimmortal--at least in non-German-speaking countries. Thus, Whitton'sultimate leitmotifs are "if only" and "what if." "What if" they hadmet? What would Goethe have made of Schubert's Lieder "if only" he hadheard any of them? Much has been made of his returning a packet ofthem unopened, but few people seem to know that when Schumann visitedHamburg, Brahms, aged 17, sent him a package of his compositions, which was also returned unopened.

The book's last and most arresting part is a detailed, criticalanalysis of all Goethe-Schubert Lieder, giving the background, as wellas the often far-fetched subtext of the poems, and the dates andcircumstances of composition. The English translations, like manyothers in the earlier chapters, are not always felicitous and aresometimes inaccurate, illustrating the problems faced by anyone whowrites in one language about the literature of another.

Since songs are meant to be heard rather than read about, the best wayto compare various composers' Goethe settings is to listen tothem. There are, of course, innumerable recordings of Schubert'sGoethe settings (try Naxos's Schubert LiedEdition).Even many by Zelter, who has becomefamous mostly as Goethe's friend and Mendelssohn's teacher, areavailable on disc. Listen, and it soon becomes obvious that Schubertlearned a lot from studying Zelter's songs (it is striking that Zelterused many inferior poems, while Schubert chose only the best). Ofcourse, you can't go wrong with baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau,the dean of German Lieder singers. --Edith Eisler ... Read more

Among the torch-bearers in the funeral pocession of Ludwig van Beethoven was a small, stocky young man of thirty, with curly dark hair and spectacles. For Franz Schubert, carrying the torch was simply an act of private and public homage; but we can now see that it had a far deeper significance. The torch of Beethoven's genius had been passed on to Schubert - the last great Viennese composer of the late 18th century. This illustrated biography of Schubert's brief, but astonishing, career is set against the colourful background of Metternich's Vienna. Music extracts include some of his most memorable melodies, among them the "Unfinished Symphony", "Rosamunde", the C Major Quintet and songs such as "Heindenroslein". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Schubert resource - beware the "paperback" though
Anyone who spends 5 minutes with this book can see that it is indispenseable. Every song is here, arranged alphabetically. Before borrowing the book from a library, I had the groundless fear that, while listening to, say, Winterreise, I would have to flip back and forth between the dispersed songs (and wear out the pause button on my player). But of course, the songs in each cycle are together, with simply the name of the cycle alphabetized.

Further on this stimulating subject, I will mention the one thing about this book that irks me. In contrast to the practice in English books, all of the songs beginning with "Der" ("The") are listed together, making a sort of subset of such songs. The same for "Die" and "Das". Since I don't know which of these three words should come before "Unterscheidung," for example, I would have to look up perhaps three places in order to find the song. Unless, of course, I had greater knowledge of German or could recall or check for the correct word (which happens to be "Die"). This is nitpicking, though, and the book sports an index of first lines. Lovely volume.

If it weren't so blasted difficult to purchase! The "beware" above has nothing to do with the book itself, but rather with this amazon page. If you click on "paperback" edition (the hardcover is currently not available), you are transported to a completely different book! I nearly purchased the other book (ISBN 0634026062) through the "staying up much too late" mists. This warning will become irrelevant soon, one hopes.

If you love Lieder, Schubert, or have a Godardian fascination with translation, grab this one (once you've found a way)! ... Read more
