This early work on Studies In modern Music is a fascinating novel of the period and still an interesting read today. Product Description
To restrict performance of the Schumann Lieder to the "familiar forty" is to deprive the singer and pianist of a major reservoir of superior song. Thus Singing Schumann not only takes an in-depth look at the widely performed middle and late Lieder, it also fully reconsiders the early songs. Offering the same readability and informed insights in this volume that distinguished his acclaimed On the Art of Singing (OUP 1996), Miller presents a practical manual to help singers and pianists bring Robert Schumann's Lieder to life in performance. He also provides cogent suggestions for interpretation of all of Schumann's solo and duet songs, useful pointers that are grounded in a thorough understanding of Schumann's compositional style and its full historical background. ... Product Description
We know Robert Schumann in many ways: as a visionary composer, a seasoned journalist, a cultured man of letters, and a genius who, having passed his mantle on to the young Brahms, succumbed to mental illness in 1856. Drawing on recent pathbreaking research, this collection offers new perspectives on this seminal nineteenth-century figure. In Part I, Leon Botstein and Michael P. Steinberg assess Schumann's efforts to place music at the center of German culture, in public and private sectors. Bernhard R. Appel offers a probing source study of one of Schumann's most personal works, the Album fr die Jugend, Op. 68, while John Daverio considers the generic identity of Das Paradies und die Peri, and Jon W. Finson reexamines the first version of the Eichendorff Liederkreis. Gerd Nauhaus investigates Schumann's approach to the symphonic finale, and R. Larry Todd considers the intractable issue of quotations and allusions in Schumann's music. Part II presents letters and memoirs, including unpublished correspondence between Clara Schumann and Felix and Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. In Part III, conflicting critical views of Schumann are juxtaposed. Some of these sources are translated into English for the first time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Hats off, folks, . . . a great find!"
Schumann and His World is a marvelous reference for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Schumann: the man, his music, how his contemporaries viewed him, what was happening socially and in the music world at the time, and what a range of historians have to say about all of the above. It is not a biography, but rather a collection of essays, letters, memoirs and musical criticism written by Schumann himself, his 19th century contemporaries (incl Mendelssohn, Liszt, Brendel and Weingartner), and by historians of both the 19th and 20th centuries. As a source of primary materials, it is a terrific companion to a biography (I found Jensen's 2001 biography to be great). For many it may not replace the need for a biography, since there are many references that may not be understood without at least a rudimentary knowledge of Schumann's life and his music. As a lecturer in music history, I can say that this book enriched my overall knowledge of Schumann's life and his music, and the music of his time, by one hundred percent. ... Read more

Product Description
Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was the quiet one, the tormented genius. A serious illness prevented him from becoming a pianist, but he fell in love with and in 1840 married Clara, the daughter of his teacher Friedrich Wieck against her father’s wishes. In 1843, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy appointed him lecturer in composition at the conservatory in Leipzig. A year later, the couple moved to Dresden. Then, in 1850, he became the Musical Director of the city of Düsseldorf. But his demons followed him wherever he went and he tried to kill himself by jumping into the Rhine four years later. He died two years later in a sanatorium. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Robert Schumann
An interesting account of the social mores of the times, particularly courting and marriage conventions , is woven into what is mainly a detailed description and analysis of Schumann's body of work. A musician's knowledge of composition is necessary if the reader is to fully appreciate the author'sanalysis of the Sonatas and Symphonies. If, like me, you just like listening to his music and don't have an expert knowledge of music theory, you will find parts of this book hard going. The book is very good when describing the methods of a working musician, for example, adaptations of the work of celebrated composers of the times (Bach, Brahms).
If you love Schumann's music ( a tad unfashionable these days as some of his music is a bit on the morbid side) you will to like this book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Robert Schumann frequently expressed his deep admiration for the novels of Jean Paul Friedrich Richter, the late-eighteenth-century German novelist, essayist, and satirist. Schumann imitated Jean Paul's prose style in his own fiction and music criticism, and said once that he learned "more counterpoint from Jean Paul than from my music teacher."

Drawing on the recent, groundbreaking work in musico-literary analysis of scholars such as Anthony Newcomb, John Daverio, and Lawrence Kramer, Erika Reiman embarks on a comparative study of Jean Paul's five major novels and Schumann's piano cycles of the 1830s, many of which are staples in the repertoire of concert pianists today. The present study begins with a thorough review of Jean Paul's literary style, emphasizing the digressions, intertextuality, self-reflexivity, and otherworldliness that distinguish it. The similarly digressive style that Schumann developed is then examined in his earliest works, including the enduring and highly original Carnaval (1835), and in cycles of the later 1830s, notably Davidsbündlertänze and Faschingsschwank aus Wien. Finally, an analysis of three one-movement works from 1838-39 reveals links with Jean Paul's exploration of the idyll, an ancient genre that had experienced an eighteenth-century revival. Throughout, the author attempts to keep in mind the actual sound and performed experience of the works, and suggests ways in which an awareness of Jean Paul's style might change the performance and hearing of the cycles. ... Product Description

Arguably no other nineteenth-century German composer was as literate or as finely attuned to setting verse as Robert Schumann. Jon W. Finson challenges long-standing assumptions about Schumann's Lieder, engaging traditionally held interpretations. He argues against the belief that the "Year of Song" simply reflects Schumann's personal life. Finson also devotes attention to the form and metric structure of German poetry that is almost entirely new to the discussion of Schumann's songs.

Arranged in part thematically, rather than merely by strict compositional chronology, this book speaks to the heart of Schumann's music. Finson's sustained attention to performance, such as questions of whether two singers might divide performance of cycles or whether miscellanies form coherent entities, allows the reader to engage Schumann's songs in novel ways.

Finson brings original research and the most recent scholarship to the musically literate public and the expert alike. This represents the definitive work on Schumann's songs and the standard reference for any Schumann enthusiast.
