Product Description
This unique volume of Alexander Scriabin’s piano music combines all of the Russian composer’s widely admired Poèmes, which exude the richness and complexity of his later style, with all of the earlier, more Chopinesque Mazurkas and Impromptus. Nearly 100 piano works of varying length and difficulty, reprinted from authoritative Russian editions, represent the full span of Scriabin’s musical life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great music, poor book
To make it short, the music this book contains is amazing.
But there are some mistakes in it...maybe I found THE piece which contains almost a mistake on each page, but it is still annoying.
The pages are too thin and so not really enjoyable to turn. I am used to good thick paper and never realized that it could make a point. Now I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the most gorgeous works in the piano repertoire
Dover publishes complete works of many composers, and they did pianists a huge favor by compiling the works of Scriabin into several volumes of music. Scriabin, a "bridge" composer between the 19th and 20th Century, composed romantic yet modernistic works sometimes reminiscent of Chopin. His later work was far more dense and individualistic. Unfortunately, he died in his 40's, but, like the short-lived Schubert,he left a considerable volume of works for the piano. The other Dover volumes are the Sonatas and the Preludes and Etudes. Logically, they put other minor works (nocturnes, dances, etc) into this volume.

If you are a skilled pianist, try the Op. 28 Fantasie. This work, sadly, is rarely recorded but is one of the most incredibly gorgeous things ever written for piano. The only other copy of this I own is in a Hungarian edition not available in the US, so rejoice if you play piano.

Dover prints music that is easy to read and the editing is usually blameless. This book is no exception. Highly recommended for serious piano students.

5-0 out of 5 stars .....as well.
What the above review failed to mention is that the "Muzurkas, Poems, and Impromptues" book contains all of Scriabin's piano music exceptingthat which is contained in the "Preludes and Etudes" and the"Piano Sonata's" books. All three of these books are published byDover and are not altered to death buy rotten editors. Comprehensiveeditions of composer's works are very valuable and often a huge oversightin the unusually chopy realm of sheet music. The book is also made as goodas paperbacks get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overlooked composer Scriabin's musical thoughts in print!!

This collection of mostly unrelated works by AlexanderNicolyavich Scriaban (1872-1915) is most undoubtedly the crown jewelof Twentieth-Century piano music; yet it is almost totally overlooked historically as well as musically. It represents not his ordered compositions, as do his preludes and etudes, but rather his sporadic, sometimes psychotic thoughts; it is a veritable musical diary of the very bizarre and mystical life of the great Russian enigma. It belongs on the shelf of any serious music student, especially those of Russian music, for in this myriad of masterworks are the very core of the underappreciated and often entirely overlooked Alexander N. Scriabin. ... Read more

Product Description
Alexander Scriabin was one of a few major composers who revolutionized musical style in the first decade of the twentieth century by eliminating key as a structural principle and by establishing a new use of dissonant harmonies. This book by James M. Baker is a study of Scriabin's twentieth-century music, the first thorough analysis of the composer's evolution from conventional tonality to his later atonal structure.Baker demonstrates that in Scriabin's transitional music, tonal and atonal procedures-generally considered mutually exclusive-work together to create unified compositions. Baker places Scriabin's harmony in the perspective of voice leading, applying Schenkerian techniques of analysis to his music for the first time.He explains the great variety of sonorities and their complex relations within the framework of set-complex theory and introduces an original method of statistical analysis to survey Scriabin's harmonic practice from 1903 to 1914.Offering comprehensive analyses of a considerable number of complete compositions, including such important works as the Fifth Piano Sonata and the Poem of Ecstasy, Baker concludes with a penetrating examination of Prometheus, Scriabin's largest and most complex composition. The literature thus far on Scriabin has emphasized aspects of his often eccentric personality and has focused narrowly on his use of certain characteristic harmonies, especially the famous "mystic chord."This thought-provoking theoretical treatise takes an important step toward a deeper understanding of the composer's accomplishments. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful (and complete) Edition
This edition of Scriabin's piano sonatas is another bargain from Dover, with clear print and sturdy binding.Their source is a reprint of a Russian edition, published in Moscow (1964), and not editions that date back to the composer.I mention this because there seems to be a misprint in the "Funebre" movement of Sonata No. 1: compare m. 5 on page 23 with the third measure from the end on page 24 -- the passages are otherwise identical, but the left hand on the third beat is different (although harmonically acceptable). One is likely incorrect. That said, Ashkenazy and Laredo play it as written, so who knows? Finally, to the reviewer who wondered if the Sonata No. 1 is complete -- it is.The "missing" movement from the Contents page (the "Funebre" mentioned above) begins on page 23.It's all there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Missing movement?
I was extremely excited to find this, but was shot down when I discovered the fourth movement of the first sonata was missing from the table of contents (via Amazon's Look Inside feature). I played this piece in college using a score checked out from the library and would like to buy my own copy. I hesitate to purchase this version when a movement is missing. Is it missing in the score as well?

(I've only rated this item a 4/5 stars because of this discrepancy. Otherwise, I'm sure it deserves a 5/5.)

Product Description

Russian composer and pianist Scriabin is best known for his perfectly spun miniatures. This volume collects his finest pieces, the complete etudes and preludes for the solo piano. Chopinesque works include the 12 etudes from Op. 8 and the 24 Preludes, Op. 11; Preludes, Opp. 33 and 48; and the Etudes, Op. 42.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
This is a good book because it is virtually the only complete set of Scriabin preludes I could find. The binding leaves a bit too be desired but all in all not a bad edition. The music it contains is five stars. Scriabin is one of my favorite piano composers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unduly neglected works for all levels of pianist
Scriabin's preludes and etudes represent everything from Scriabin's early days through to the final ones. The preludes etudes show such a wide variety of styles and colors of such a wide variety of difficulties (from very easy preludes to some extremely demanding etudes) that this book would give anyone years of beautiful music to study.

Many pianists and aspiring musicians tend to categorize Scriabin as a "2nd-tier" composer, ignoring all but a few of his works (such as his etudes Op. 8 No. 12 and Op. 42 No. 5, both included in this volume). Before purchasing this volume (and the sonatas and miscellaneous pieces), I was under this false impression as well; however, the more Scriabin I play, the more I am convinced of his incredible innovation, creativity, and talent for writing thoroughly profound music in a matter of a few dozen bars.

After having read through most of the book, and having seriously studied a fair number of the works within, I tend to be thoroughly dissatisfied with most performances of his music - I believe that the lack of color and architecture in many modern performances of his music make it sound shallow and boring; thus the general lack of interest in his music.

For such a cheap price, I would implore any pianist or piano student to purchase this volume and discover Scriabin for themselves. It's the best ten bucks I've ever spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars *****
Scriabin was one of the supreme composers of the piano. This book is treasure trove for any serious lover ofpiano music. If he composed nothing but his Etude No.5, he would still be immortal. You can hear it for free here: www.myspace.com/kristijankraljevic

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the greatest late Romantic piano solo works
Scriabin was a contemporary of Rachmaninoff, in fact, he studied under the same teacher. Like Rachmaninoff, he was a bridge composer between the late Romantic and the 20th Century period. He was far more modern, in fact, than Rachmaninoff, though his early works were profoundly influenced by Chopin (Rachmaninoff less so--he was influenced by Chopin but also Tchaikovsky.)

Despite the fact both composers shared Russian heritage and a love of the piano, Rachmaninoff did not admire Scriabin's works, saying he had gone off in a wrong direction. While I love Rachmaninoff's piano works intensely, I have to say that he was really wrong about Scriabin. This is some of the most gorgeous, introspective, Impressionist piano music ever written.

Scriabin had a tragically short life, yet he composed quite a number of etudes, preludes, sonatas and other short piano works. Dover has done a huge favor by putting all the preludes and etudes into a single volume. There is enough material here for years of exploration into the music of a piano master. The edition is a compact volume that manages to sit well on the piano music stand, and the music print is clear and easy to read. ... Read more

Product Description
This handsome compilation features a pair of great works from two distinguished Russian composers. Alexander Scriabin wrote his Piano Concerto in F-sharp Minor during the first significant phase of his artistic career, during which he focused on creating piano works in the modes of Chopin and Liszt. He ventured beyond his Romantic models to fashion pieces with a fresh delicacy, clarity, and richness, as well as a uniquely expressive range that ran from subtlety to vivid "sensations" (the composer's favorite term). Anton Rubinstein spent a lifetime touring, thrilling audiences with a pianistic virtuosity reputed to rival that of Liszt. A prolific composer (his oeuvre includes 17 operas), Rubinstein naturally wrote a vast quantity of piano music, including this magnificent concerto. Pianists as well as any admirer of these composers will delight in this convenient, authoritative edition of two excellent piano concertos. Unabridged republication of Scriabin's Piano Concerto, Op. 20, originally published by M. P. Belaieff, Frankfurt, n.d., and Rubinstein's Piano Concerto, Op. 70, originally published by Bartholf Senff, Leipzig, n.d. Introduction by Joseph Banowetz.
