5-0 out of 5 stars An underrated composer
Josef Suk (1874-1935) was Dvorák's pupil and son-in-law, and the teacher of Martinu among others. He was not a particularly prolific composer but most of his works are of high quality, and the Fantasticke Scherzo is no exception. This is a totally delectable ten-minute work in a light-hearted mood, with propulsive rhythms and a gorgeous recurring theme in the violoncelli.
This Serenissima score is a reprint of the Breitkopf & Härtel edition of around 1905.The engraving is very clear and the score well laid out with good spacing between the staves.Print quality is fine and this score is a pleasure to use.
There is an excellent recording by Charles Mackerras and the Czech Philharmonic which should be readily available. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1968, Josef Koudelka was a 30-year-old acclaimed theater photographer who had never made pictures of a news event. That all changed on the night of August 21, when Warsaw Pact tanks invaded the city of Prague, ending the short-lived political liberalization in Czechoslovakia that came to be known as Prague Spring. Koudelka had returned home the day before from photographing gypsies in Romania. In the midst of the turmoil of the Soviet-led invasion, he took a series of photographs which were miraculously smuggled out of the country. A year after they reached New York, Magnum Photos distributed the images credited to "an unknown Czech photographer" to avoid reprisals. The intensity and significance of the images earned the still-anonymous photographer the Robert Capa Award. Sixteen years would pass before Koudelka could safely acknowledge authorship. Forty years after the invasion, this impressive monograph features nearly 250 of these searing images-most of them published here for the first time-personally selected by Koudelka from his extensive archive. Interspersed with the images are press and propaganda quotations from the time, also selected by Koudelka, alongside a text by three Czech historians. Though the images gathered in this remarkable publication document a specific historical event, their transformative quality still resonates. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Leica Photography
Koudelka is an icon of 20th century photography. His images, shot with Leica cameras capture the rape of Prague by the Soviet Union. All printed beautifully in this tome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forty years after the invasion...
I received my copy of Invasion 68 the week that Russian tanks where rumbling their way through Georgia.

Almost 40 years to the day that the same thing happened in the then Czechoslovakia.

As a work of photo journalism Invasion 68 is very impressive, its images sadly timeless.

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Josef Suk," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Josef Suk in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Josef Suk when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Josef Suk, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Excerpt: Rafael Jeroným Kubelík (29 June 1914 11 August 1996) was a Czech conductor and composer. Kubelík was born in Býchory, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary, today's Czech Republic. He was the sixth child of the Bohemian violinist Jan Kubelík, whom the younger Kubelík described as "a kind of god to me." Rafael Kubelík studied violin with his father, and later violin, composition, and conducting at the Prague Conservatory. He graduated from the conservatory in 1933, at the age of 19; at his graduation concert he played a Paganini concerto and a composition of his own for violin and orchestra. Kubelík was also an accomplished pianist, and served as his father's piano accompanist on a tour of the United States in 1935. In 1939, Rafael Kubelík became music director of the Brno Opera, a position he held until the Nazis shut the company down on 12 November 1941. Product Description
Pohadka Leta (A Sumer Tale) was composed at a particularly dark time in the composer's life, just after the death of both his wife and father in law - the composer Antonin Dvorak. A remarkable work, with many shfting moods and brilliant orchestration, ending with a wistful nocturne. Available for the first time as a digitally-enhanced reprint of the score originally issued in 1910 by Universal Edition, Vienna. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great find!
I have scoured the internet for scores of Suks orchestral works, and they aren't easy to come by. So it was a big and pleasant surprise to find this affordable study score of probably his most lush composition right here on Amazon. Summer Tale is not very well known and rarely heard, yet no doubt one of the great masterpieces of the late romantic era. It yields in nothing to its more famous predecessor Asrael, and to many listeners will be more immediately accessible: the textures are less spare, and the sound-colors Suk conjures up are of a rarefied beauty and subtlety. The closing bars, Andante sostenuto, are among the most mysterious and haunting things you will ever hear from an orchestra. Owning a score is therefore worthwhile, and this is an excellent opportunity. It is not one of those pocket-sized books, but a fairly large format edition, reprinted directly from a 1910 Universal Edition publication. Overall, readability is pretty good, though the lines of the staves are just a tad too thick which just occasionally makes it difficult to distinguish open from closed noteheads. A table of contents, that shows on which page each movement starts, is omitted, which is a pity. But these are minor quibbles and anyone seriously interested in this fascinating music needs not hesitate. ... Read more
