Product Description
This unique documentary biography is the first to draw on the composer's own private documents--over 5,000 letters, his diaries, and articles--to present the most complete and compelling picture ever of his turbulent life and work. Linking the documents with concise, explanatory comments, Orlova charts chronologically the events of his life and sheds new light on all aspects of his personality, including his methods of working and his views on such subjects as philosophy, religion, literature, and music.Of particular interest is the clear evidence Orlova presents for the theory that Tchaikovsky did not die of cholera in 1893, but committed suicide to preserve his honor and cover up a personal scandal.Suppressed in the Russian edition of the book, the suicide theory has since been corroborated by another source and receives its fullest exposition to date in this English-language edition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely engrossing
This is a wonderful book. The technique of editing Tchaikovsky's actual and voluminous correspondence into one coherent stream makes for fascinating and tasty reading.Tchaikovsky's intelligence is made obvious,as is his exquisite sensitivity, keen perception, expressivity, andpersonal charm.I was reading a standard biography at the same time I wasreading this, and the comparison did not flatter the standard format. There is no substitute for the "real deal".We are lucky to havethis first person record of his "in the moment" thoughts. It issad that letter writing is a dead practice because it disciplines thewriter's mind and reveals much to the lucky reader. This book has given meextraordinary pleasure. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Supreme Tchaik Criticism
Just to clarify for readers who may be confused by the review below (as am I): Brown, like most modern Tchaik biographers and critics, cites Tchaikovsky's sexuality often in his analyses precisely because Tchaikovsky's life is inseperable from his music. They are one and the same, you cannot understand Tchaik's music without understanding his life, and his inner torment. Furthermore, if you seek to further understand Tchaik's music by understanding Tchaik as a person, David Brown's comprehensive insights are among the best out there. He gives thorough account of his life, history, etc, as well as his psychological mindset. With this, he goes into extensive analysis of his works as they were written- genesis, reception, and then in hindsight. As for the confused review above, Brown covers Tchaikovsky in whole much more completely and eloquently than many authors. These books are great resourcs, and if you do not own them, at least go to the library check it out for some minimal study. It is great fun, and very enlightening.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why Tchaikovsky was homosexual is of interest to me.
Brown figured out where Tchaikovsky's musical ideas came from, and how he wrote music. Also, authors like Brown, Poznansky and others mention Tchaikovsky's homosexuality, but don't explain or stress why. My thoughtshere are about Tchaikovsky and his sexuality. Some people may misunderstandit or simply not know what caused it. You may not find this interesting, but I do. If Tchaikovsky's sexuality is mentioned, authors should at leasttry to figure out and stress why. I've read different sources onTchaikovsky and psychology. Why isn't this psychology stressed and emphasized by Tchaikovsky's authors? So, like Brown, I don't thinkTchaikovsky's authors tried to emphasize why Tchaikovsky was homosexual, and I think they should have. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, this wonderful ballet in its entirety
Years ago, I purchased the Nutcracker Suite in full score, only to discover that it was only a few famous selections from the full ballet. This was my own mistake because I failed to realize that it was, in fact, merely the suite in full score. But now, after waiting for years after, Dover has presented us with a wonderful full score of the whole ballet that we all know as the most famous ballet ever written. If you are a great admirer of this magnificent work by Tchaikovsky, I highly suggest purchasing this well-priced score.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last: the real thing.
I finally broke down and bought this excellent reprint of the full score. It completes my circle of "Nutcracker" appreciation: first as music (as a kid - two recordings and the piano pieces that drove my parents crazy), then as ballet (as a teen, the first ballet I ever saw), then as orchestration (as the celesta player - "I AM Sugar-Plum!"), and now I can look at the score with full appreciation, with more than one exclamation of "So THAT'S how he did it!"Everything from the translated Russian to the French stage directions adds to the value of this highly affordable publication.A real joy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A splendid reprint
Despite the remarks of a couple of previous reviewers, this Dover score is very much a faithful reprint of the score first issued in September 1892 by P. Jurgenson, Moscow. The original price was 150 rubles, which was roughly the equivalent of $75 in 1892 dollars - or $1500 in 2005 dollars!! It's therefore safe to say that this Dover reprint is a terrific bargain.

I can understand the previous reviewers' excitement, though. Having the complete ballet available - with page after page of such glorious music - is a pure delight for music lovers. The quality of Dover's printing and binding is excellent even by their usual high standards. They absolutely deserve each and every one of the five stars I'm giving them in this review.

5-0 out of 5 stars at last a cheap clear score of the nutcracker
at last a cheap, clear score of the nutcracker ballet. it seems to be a new engraving, not just a reprint of a 19th century edition. the orchestration is as fresh as ever and the score lets you into the nitty gritty of tchaikovsky's inspiration for this his last ballet. I hope we don't wait too long for similar editions of sleeping beauty and swan lake. have fun and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an affordable complete Nutcracker!
I have long awaited this publication. Shortly after I purchased the Nutcracker Suite from Dover 6 years ago, I wrote them multiple times asking them to consider publishing the complete work, but I was disappointed until now.

A reprint of an "Authoritative Early [Russian?] Edition," the score is very pleasingly engraved, close-spaced but not overly crowded. In the front, there is a translation of all the Russian notes that occur in the text, and all of the French stage directions are translated in footnotes at the bottom of the pages. Though it is over 500 pages, Dover has used paper thinner than their norm (yet with virtually no bleed-through), so the book is not too thick. It is, however, a little floppier than most of my other Dover scores. That, though, is a very small price to pay finally to own a full score of this most-popular ballet!

Finally, I can study the orchestration in some of the gems not found in the suite, such as the Waltz of the Snowflakes, Chocolate (Spanish Dance), and others--in an edition that is both affordable and well-made.I had been able to borrow a copy of the 2-volume paperback Kalmus edition (atrociously expensive for a student's budget) from my college library, and I was shocked at how poorly it was bound. The spine cracked after one or two GENTLE usings and pages were about to fall out.Such will not be the case with this Dover edition.I look forward to many years of pleasant study and enjoyment with this volume. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of Tchaikovsky's Best
At the youthful age of only 29, Tchaikovsky managed to make one of the most profound pieces of his career and most heard piece in our culture today."Romeo and Juliet" is a magnificent piece that captures the passion and tragic fate of Shakespeare's most famous work. The love theme in Romeo and Juliet portrays Romeo and Juliet's love better than any other, even Prokoffiev's famous version adapted for a play."Capriccio Italien", less dark and heavy as the latter piece, is a pleasant contrast, complete with Italian-influenced songs and harmony.Dover's wonderful release of the full scores to these two well-known pieces gives people the chance to study and further appreciate these masterpieces. The complexity of these works can no greater be expressed than by looking through this book alone. It is a great source of knowledge for anyone interested in music theory and a treasure trove of experience for anybody interested in orchestration. This book deserves to be in any classical enthusiast's bookshelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Set of Scores
This is an easy-to-read set of score of two of Peter Tchaikovsky's most celebrated orchestral works. As to Capriccio Italien, Tchaikovsky began composing this upon the inspiration he got when he was staying in Florence,Italy. It is a bunch of published Italian folk-tunes and popular tunesthat caught his ears during his stay in Italy. He began composing in Romein 1880 and finished it after he returned to Russia.Romeo and Juliet isone of the pieces that initially made Tchaikovsky internationally famous, composed during September and November 1869.Both Romeo and Juliet andCapriccio Italien reflect Tchaikovsky's talent in producing of uniquelyconvincing melodies and excellence in orchestration. And this score is afine companion for those wishing to pursue a detailed study ofTchaikovsky's masterpieces. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fate. Bittersweetness. Joke. Russian Folk Song. = FANTASTIC
The "Fate" theme is from the first movement. The bittersweetness is the the second movement. The joke or "Scherzo" is in the third movement, and the Russian Folk song is the fourth movement.

FANTASTIC. When I got this item of Tchaikovsky's fourth symphony, I was really enthusiastic with it. I'd always like to read it whenever I felt like to listen to the symphony, and I'm really inspired by the notes everytime I see it. Music has been my obsession for many years, and as I see and hear Tchaikovsky's fourth symphony, I feel the great expressions he's expressing. Tchaikovsky, to me, is a composer you could sense out quite easily. I'd say that he's nearly as famous as Beethoven. ... Read more
