Ford Madox Brown was born in Calais in 1821. Brown studied art at Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Rome and Paris before returning to England in 1845. Three years later Brown became friendly with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and other members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
In 1852 Brown began work on what was to be the first serious attempt by a British artist to represent the working class in an urban environment. The painting shows the excavations for the laying of a sewage system in Hampstead. The figures in the painting were based on the actual navvies that did the work. Also in the picture are two observers, F. D. Maurice

Ford Madox Brown
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Ford Madox Brown ), English painter of moral and historical subjects, notable for his perfection of the Pre-Raphaelite style. While he was closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites Brotherhood, he was never actually a member of the Brotherhood. Nevertheless, he remained close to Dante Gabriel Rossetti , with whom he also joined William Morris 's design company. One of his most famous images is "The Last of England", a portrait of a pair of stricken immigrants as they sail away on the ship that will take them from England forever. It was inpired by the departure of the Pre-Raphaelite sculptor Thomas Woolner , who had left for Australia. The painting is structured with Brown's characteristic linear energy, and emphasis on apparently grotesque and banal details, such as the cabbages hanging from the ship's side.

(b 16 April 1821 Calais - d 6 October 1893, London)
ord Madox Brown, the son of the resigned ship treasurer, was born in Calais. He studied in Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Paris tried different manners. The first of his significant works are " The Execution of Mary Queen of Scots" (1840, Manchester, Witworth Art Gallery), "Mangfred and Jungfrau" (1841, Manchester, City Art Gallery).
In 1844 he participated in the project's contest for the new Westminster Palace. His cartoon "Body of Harold Brought before William the Conqueror" (1844, London, S.London A.G.) impressed the young Dante Gabriel Rossetti so much that he wrote a letter to be Brown's student. Thanked to Rossetti Brown became acquainted with Hunt and Millais, but he refused to enter the "Brotherhood."
In 1845 Brown was in Rome, where he met Nazarethers, but he didin't get their strong influence. When he moved to England Madox Brown painted two works on the National History subjects: " Wicliff Reading His Translation of the Bible to John Gaunt" (1848, Bradford, City Art Gallery and Museum) and "Chaucer at the Court of King Edward III" (1845-1851, London, Tate Gallery). The artist is characterized by his attention to the historical authencity of the whole details, by the compound composition and bright colour. All these features appeared under the influence of Pre- Raphaelites.
Almost all the 50s Brown tried to embody the most monumental of his thought - to glorify the greatness of human's work. And it was reflected in his grandiose art canvas

Ford Madox Brown 1821-1893
Always an outsider to the art establishment who viewed him as suspiciously foreign because of his birth in Calais on April 16th 1821, although to British parents, he studied art in the great schools of Antwerp and Paris and used their influence to bear in his paintings. His paintings are very much in demand, but his contemporaries largely ignored his work, thus he never made a great deal of money from the sale of his pictures. After a visit to Rome in 1845 he fell under the influence of the Nazarene School of painting, as practised by the German painters Johann Overbeck (1789-1869) and Peter von Cornelius. Madox Brown's work was highly original at the time when British art was mundane and predictable;his subjects being scenes from English literature but produced in a dark, highly mannered and dramatic style. His work bore the brunt of his two great weaknesses - finishing and retouching. Even more so than Dante Gabriel Rossetti ; he was almost incapable of finishing his paintings, so this meant that he was never capable of leaving the work alone, even when it was ostensibly finished, he would continually retouch it, even when the paintings were already sold. Ford Madox Brown first met Rossetti in March 1848 and for a short time gave him academic painting lessons. But this rather fell by the wayside and Rossetti moved on, but later they resumed their friendship. Ford Madox Brown became closely involved with the

Ford Madox Brown was born in Calais in 1821. He is probably best known for his detailed paintings The Last of England and Work . Madox Brown was trained on the Continent, where he encountered the Nazarenes, a group of expatriate German painters sometimes considered a forerunner of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Led by Peter Cornelius and Friedrich Overbeck, the Nazarenes championed the manipulation of religious and cultural archaisms toward a purification of art. Madox Brown made his acquaintance with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood through Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who, unhappy with his training, wrote for permission to become Madox Brown's pupil in March of 1848. The 27-year-old painter put Rossetti to work on still-life themes. Although he was deeply affected by Madox Brown's works-in-progressnotably Chaucer at the Court of King Edward III and Wycliffe reading his Translation of the Bible to John of Gaunt Rossetti found studying under his new mentor just as tedious as his Royal Academy training, and decided to associate with Holman Hunt instead.

Born in Calais on 16 April 1821, Ford Madox Brown revealed a precocious talent for art at an early age. From 1836 to 1846 he studied drawing in Europe, first in Bruges with a pupil of David, later in Antwerp with Baron Wappers. He travelled to Paris and Rome, where he befriended Cornelius and Overbeck, survivors of the German Romantic Nazarene movement. In 1841 he produced his first important oil painting, taking the execution of Mary Queen of Scots as his subject. Back in England, he met Rossetti and became associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, although he never joined it. From 1850 on, however, his works, mainly on historical and religious themes, closely adhered to the Pre-Raphaelite precepts. He executed an important series of frescoes in the Manchester Town Hall (1880-93), illustrating episodes in the history of the city, and numerous stained-glass designs. His life was a continual succession of adversities and delusions; neglected by both the critics and the public, he never knew real success. He died in London on 11 October 1893. Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893)
The story has it that the young Rossetti , very keen to become an apprentice to Ford Madox Brown, wrote to him such an effusive letter that Madox Brown felt he was being made a fool of, found a large stick, and went to seek the younger man with violence in mind. On their meeting, however, Madox Brown was convinced of the genuine enthusiasm of Rossetti, and became first his tutor and then lifelong friend. Madox Brown sympathised closely with the Pre-Raphaelites , although he was never formally one of the brotherhood. Later in life, he said of them: Strictly speaking, I was not one of them. I was somewhat older than them at the time, and I disavowed certain of their tenets. Before meeting them I had already in Paris resolved on a system of individualised and truer light and shade... about this time also I had an attraction towarlds Holbein, after being once chiefly swayed by Rembrandt. On my meeting the Pre-Raphaelites, I shared their feeling for intense and brilliant colour. Many of Madox Brown's pictures may be fairly classed as Pre-Raphaelite. His most important picture is

BROWN, FORD MADOX
BROWN, FORD MADOX (1821—1893), English painter, was born at Calais on the 16th of April 1821. His father was Ford Brown, a retired purser in the navy; his mother, Caroline Madox, of an old Kentish family. His paternal grandfather was Dr John Brown, who established the Brunonian Theory of Medicine. Ford Madox Brown was the only child of his parents, save for a daughter who died young. In childhood he was shifted about a good deal between France and England; and having Shown from the age of six or seven a turn for drawing he was taken, when fourteen years old, and with meagre acquirements in the way of general tuition, to Bruges, and placed under the instruction of Gregorius, a pupil of David. His principal instructor, however, from about 1837, was Baron Wappers, of Antwerp, then regarded as a great light of the Belgian school. From him the youth learned the technique not only of oil painting but of various other branches of art. At a very early age Brown “Work” (a street scene at Hampstead); and “The Last of England” (an emigration subject, one of his most excellent achievements): dating between 1851 and 1863. “Christ Washing Peter’s Feet” (now in the National Gallery of British Art) comes within the same range of dates, and is a masterly work; here the pre-Raphaelite influence is less manifest. Altogether it may be averred that the conception and introduc~ tion of the pre-Raphaelite scheme, such as it appeared ‘to the public eye in 1849 and 185o, belong to Millais, Holman Hunt and Rossetti, rather than to Brown.

Rossetti studied briefly with him in 1848 and Brown's Chaucer at the Court of Edward III (Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 1851) contains portraits of several of the Brotherhood. His best-known picture, The Last of England (City Art Gallery, Birmingham, 1855) was inspired by the departure of Woolner, the Pre-Raphaelite sculptor, for Australia. The other famous anthology piece that Brown painted, Work (Manchester City Art Gallery, 1852-63), shows his dedicated craftsmanship and brilliant coloring, but is somewhat swamped by its social idealism. In 1861 Brown was a founder member of William Morris's company, for which he designed stained glass and furniture. The major work of the later part of his career is a cycle of paintings (1878-93) in Manchester Town Hall on the history of the city.
