BIOGRAPHY by courtesy of ArtMagick Born in Calais on 16 April 1821, Ford Madox Brown revealed a precocious talent for art at an early age. From 1836 to 1846 he studied drawing in Europe, first in Bruges with a pupil of David, later in Antwerp with Baron Wappers. He travelled to Paris and Rome, where he befriended Cornelius and Overbeck, survivors of the German Romantic Nazarene movement.
In 1841 he produced his first important oil painting, taking the execution of Mary Queen of Scots as his subject. Back in England, he met Rossetti and became associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, although he never joined it. From 1850 on, however, his works, mainly on historical and religious themes, closely adhered to the Pre-Raphaelite precepts.
He executed an important series of frescoes in the Manchester Town Hall (1880-93), illustrating episodes in the history of the city, and numerous stained-glass designs. His life was a continual succession of adversities and delusions; neglected by both the critics and the public, he never knew real success. He died in London on 11 October 1893.

Calais,1821-London,1893 The story has it that the young Rossetti, very keen to become an apprentice to Ford Madox Brown, wrote to him such an effusive letter that Madox Brown felt he was being made a fool of, found a large stick, and went to seek the younger man with violence in mind. On their meeting, however, Madox Brown was convinced of the genuine enthusiasm of Rossetti, and became first his tutor and then lifelong friend. Madox Brown sympathised closely with the Pre-Raphaelites, although he was never formally one of the brotherhood. Later in life, he said of them: Strictly speaking, I was not one of them. I was somewhat older than them at the time, and I disavowed certain of their tenets. Before meeting them I had already in Paris resolved on a system of individualised and truer light and shade... about this time also I had an attraction towarlds Holbein, after being once chiefly swayed by Rembrandt. On my meeting the Pre-Raphaelites, I shared their feeling for intense and brilliant colour. Many of Madox Brown's pictures may be fairly classed as Pre-Raphaelite. His most important picture is

    Ford Madox Brown: An Introduction
    Christopher Newall
ord Madox Brown was significantly older than the members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood which formed in 1848, but despite this difference of generation and experience he was a most important figure in the wider context of Pre-Raphaelitism, and one who was revered by each of the P.R.B. protagonists, Rossetti Holman Hunt and Millais . Brown was born in France and brought up in Belgium. He received a conventional academic art education in various studios and subsequently at the Antwerp Academy. His knowledge of painting, both past and contemporary, was considerable; in this respect he was different to most other British painters of the Age. Brown settled in London in 1844 and gradually his style changed in favour of a realistic representation of figures and landscape, with the use of clear, strong colours and effects of daylight. In 1848 Rossetti approached Brown for instruction and from this point on friendly relations and mutual exchange of influence occured between Brown and each of the Pre- Raphael ite s. Brown's two paintings Work and The Last of England were both begun in 1852 and were each worked on by him for very long periods. As well as being his personal masterpieces they are both amongst the greatest paintings of the nineteenth century. In the 1860s Brown worked as an illustrator and as a designer of furniture and stained glass. He was involved from its inception in 1861 with the decorating firm of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co

Artist - Brown Brown, Ford Madox (1821-1893) Portrait by Dante Gabriel Rossetti Brown had a cosmopolitan upbringing - born in France, he trained in Antwerp, Paris and Rome. By 1846 he had settled in England where he attracted the attention of the younger Pre-Raphaelites who admired his medievalising style of painting. In turn influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, Brown started painting meticulously realised landscapes, painted out of doors. Never critically or commercially successful, Brown was saved from poverty at the end of his career by the commission for a cycle of paintings of Manchester’s history for the Town Hall. The Last of England Brown: did you know? Brown was known for his individualism and pioneered the one-man show in England.
