HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Brown, Ford Madox An unfinished painting by the English painter Ford Madox Brown, entitled Take your son, Sir . Painted in about 1852, the picture tells a story and shows the artist's growing interest in medievalism. In 1850, Ford Madox Brown had written for the Pre-Raphaelite magazine Germ , and Dante Gabriel Rossetti worked in his studio. (Image © The Art Archive/Tate Gallery London) English painter, associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood through his pupil Dante Gabriel Rossetti. His pictures, which include The Last of England (1855 City Art Gallery, Birmingham) and Work (185265 City Art Gallery, Manchester), are characterized by elaborate symbolism and abundance of realistic detail. He studied under the Belgian painter and engraver Baron Gustaf Wappers (18031874) at Antwerp, Belgium, worked for three years in Paris, and was influenced by the German Nazarenes, a group of painters whom he met when visiting Rome in 1845. He settled in London and Rossetti became his pupil in 1848. Although not a member of the English Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, he was drawn by Rossetti into its orbit and his works clearly reflect Pre-Raphaelite enthusiasms. His paintings for the town hall in Manchester (187893) were a notable effort to interpret local and social history. His later subject pictures, romantic treatments of scenes from history and literature such as

Ford Madox Brown The Artist Wrote.. 'At that time extensive excavations, connected with the supply of water, were going on in the neighbourhood, and seeing and studying daily as did the British excavator, or navvy, as he designates himself, in the full swing of his activity (with his manly and picturesque costume, and the rich glow of colour which exercise under a hot sun will impart), it appeared to me that he was at least as worthy of the powers of the English painter, as the fisherman of the Adriatic, the peasant of the Campagna, or the Neapolitan lazzarone. Gradually this idea developed itself into that of "Work" as it now exists, with the British excavator for a central group, as the outward and visible type of Work.' Back to the top of the page...

56. History Of Ford Madox Brown Biography
History of ford madox brown. ford madox brown first met Dante Gabriel Rossettiin March 1848 and for a short time gave him academic painting lessons.
http://euro-art-gallery.net/history/brown.htm
History of Ford Madox Brown
Always an outsider to the art establishment who viewed him as suspiciously foreign because of his birth outside Britain, although to British parents, Ford Madox Brown studied art in the great schools of Antwerp and Paris and brought their influence to bear in his paintings. His pictures are now much in demand, but his contemporaries largely ignored his work and he never made much money out of painting. After visiting Rome in 1845 he became very influenced by the Nazarene School of painting, as invented and practiced by the German painters Johann Overbeck (1789-1869) and Peter von Cornelius (1783-1875).
Madox Brown's work was highly Original size at a time when British art was mundane and predictable; his subjects were to do with English literature and language but produced in a dark, highly mannered, and dramatic style synthesized from his early European training and his tours of Italy and Switzerland. His work bore the brunt of his two great weaknesses - finishing and retouching. Even more so than Rossetti, he was almost incapable of finishing his paintings, this meant that he was never able to leave a work alone, even when it was ostensibly finished, he would continually retouch it, even though sometimes the painting was already sold.
Ford Madox Brown first met Dante Gabriel Rossetti in March 1848 and for a short time gave him academic painting lessons. This rather fell on deaf ears and Rossetti moved on, but in time they resumed their friendship. Ford Madox Brown became closely involved with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood through his friendship with Rossetti, but never a member because he was regarded with xenophobic suspicion by Hunt and Millais.

A BROWN STUDY
Ford Madox Brown
Brown, the son of a retired Royal Navy purser, was born in 1821 in Calais, and studied art in Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp. After working in Paris for a while, a competition to produce murals for the new Houses of Parliament brought him to London. He won nothing in the 1845 competition, and moved on to Rome, for the health of his consumptive wife. (She died in May 1846 in Paris, as they were returning to England, and is buried in Highgate Cemetery.)
Model wife
In August 1847 Brown was installed in a studio in Bloomsbury, and it was there in December 1848 that a new model came to pose for a picture of Cordelia at the Bedside of Lear.
By August 1853 that model, Emma Hill, had become his second wife, and they rented 1 Grove Villas, a new house (now demolished) fronting Ballards Lane in Finchley. This was a bad move professionally, as it tended to cut Brown off from potential West End customers, and an auction of his works designed to restore his finances the following July was a disaster.
Hendon times
He began to look for suitable landscape subjects. 'Out by 1/4 to 8 to examine the River Brent at Hendon, a mere brooklet running in most dainty sinuosity under overshadowing oaks and all manner of leafgrass,' he noted on 1 September 1854. 'Many beauties and hard to chuse amongst for I had determined to make a little picture of it.'
