Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893)
Rossetti, was an apprentice to Ford Madox Brown. Brown was convinced of Rossetti's genuine enthusiasm and became first his tutor and then lifelong friend. Madox Brown sympathised closely with the Pre-Raphaelites, although he was never formally one of the Brotherhood and said of them: 'Strictly speaking, I was not one of them. I was somewhat older than them at the time, and I disavowed certain of their tenets. I had an attraction towards Holbein, after being once chiefly swayed by Rembrandt. On my meeting the Pre-Raphaelites, I shared their feeling for intense and brilliant colour.' Many of Madox Brown's pictures are influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. This can be seen in out-of-door studies of light effects, such as in Carrying Corn or the use of colour and subject matter in the Coat of Many Colours. He painted topical pictures; The Last of England, for instance, depicts mass emigration of the mid-18th century or Work which depicts a profile of the various classes at mid century. Madox Brown was a founder member of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co

See also: Pre-Raphaelites "Always an outsider to the art establishment who viewed him as suspiciously foreign because of his birth outside Britain, although to British parents, Ford Madox Brown studied art in the great schools of Antwerp and Paris and brought their influence to bear in his paintings. His pictures are now much in demand, but his contemporaries largely ignored his work and he never made much money out of painting. After visiting Rome in 1845 he became very influenced by the Nazarene School of painting, as invented and practiced by the German painters Johann Overbeck (1789-1869) and Peter von Cornelius (1783-1875). "Madox Brown's work was highly original at a time when British art was mundane and predictable; his subjects were to do with English literature and language but produced in a dark, highly mannered, and dramatic style synthesized from his early European training and his tours of Italy and Switzerland. His work bore the brunt of his two great weaknesses - finishing and retouching. Even more so than Rossetti , he was almost incapable of finishing his paintings, this meant that he was never able to leave a work alone, even when it was ostensibly finished, he would continually retouch it, even though sometimes the painting was already sold.

Victorian Art in Britain Obituary - Ford Madox Brown The Death of Ford Madox Brown - THE JOURNAL OF ART 1893 Death has been strangely busy in the late autumn with some of the noblest names in English Art. In Ford Madox Brown, who died on October 6th, 1893, passed away not only a brilliantly original and distinctive artist of high accomplishment, but one of the names which connects us with a great revolutionary epoch in English Art. Mr Brown was trained from his extreme youth in the severe practice of Art, to which he was heart and soul devoted. Though later in life so intimately associated with the city of Manchester that many people supposed him to be a native thereof, he was born at Calais in 1821, and was of Scottish parentage. In his boyhood he was placed under the tutelage of Baron Wappers, at Antwerp, and there mastered, in a fashion attempted by few, if any, living artists, the mysteries of all processes of Art, fresco, oil, water-colour, pastel, encaustic, engraving, lithography, and much else. Subsequently, he lived and studied in Paris, and still later in Rome, his earliest work showing the influence successively of Delacroix, who at that time dominated French Art, and the great Italian masters. With the Pre-Raphaelite movement he was never officially associated, though he was a Pre-Raphaelite before the Pre-Raphaelites

    L S Lowry
Lawrence Stephen Lowry was born in Rusholme, Manchester in November 1887, the only child of Irish-born R S Lowry and Elizabeth Lowry (née Hobson). He attended a local school in Victoria Park, but took private lessons from William Fitz, before starting work as a clerk for a firm of chartered accountants in 1904.
From 1905-1915 he attended drawing and painting classes at the Municipal College of Art (later Manchester College of Art, and now part of Manchester Metropolitan University), where he was tutored by Adolphe Valette. He moved to Pendlebury in Salford with his parents in 1909, where he was to live for nearly 40 years. During this time he attended art classes at Salford School of Art, developing an interest in the urban and industrial landscape.
He exhibited with the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts from 1919, as well as entering paintings in the Paris Salon. By the early 1930s he was exhibiting at the Royal Academy in London. He was awarded an honorary MA at Manchester University in 1945, and Doctor of Letters in 1961, elected to the Royal Academy in 1962, and given freedom of the City of Salford in 1965 - many other honours followed later.

She also worked as his model and studio assistant. Her first exhibition was in 1869 and there after chiefly painted in watercolors. In 1872 she married musicologist, Franz Hueffer.
