'Sir Edward Burne-Jones'
John Ruskin Edward Burne-Jones belonged to the second generation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, creating a narrative style of romantic symbolism steeped in medieval legend and fused with the influence of the Italian Rennaissance. He became one of the most sought-after painters in Europe. Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) and William Morris (1834-1896) met whilst at Oxford taking Holy Orders. Here they gained inspiration from the writings of Ruskin, and decided they wanted to become artists. Ruskin saw the work of Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as 'the dawn of a new era of art', and Burne-Jones went to London to seek out Rossetti. Philip Webb , Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Madox Brown. They created murals, carvings, stained glass, metal work, embroidery and furniture. Their success was mainly due to Morris and Webb's associations with architects, church decoration being their most important activity. When Burne-Jones joined The Firm in 1861, his job as stained glass window designer at Powell's went to his friend Henry Holiday Burne-Jones died on June 17th 1898. Six days later at the intervention of the Prince of Wales, a memorial service was held at Westminster Abbey, the first time any artist had been so honoured.

Burne-Jones, Sir Edward Coley
Burne-Jones, Sir Edward Coley , professional name of EDWARD COLEY JONES (1833-1898), English painter, designer, and illustrator, born in Birmingham and educated at the University of Oxford. Trained by the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti , Burne-Jones shared the Pre-Raphaelites' concern with restoring to art what they considered the purity of form, stylization, and high moral tone of medieval painting and design. His paintings, inspired by medieval, classical, and biblical themes, are noted for their sentimentality and dreamlike romanticized style; they are generally considered among the finest works of the Pre-Raphaelite school. They include King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid (1884, Tate Gallery, London). Burne-Jones was also prominent in the revival of medieval applied arts led by his Oxford friend the poet and artist William Morris. For Morris's firm he designed stained-glass windows, mosaics, and tapestries. His windows can be seen in many English churches, including Christ Church, Oxford, and Birmingham Cathedral. He also illustrated books of Morris's Kelmscott Press, notably Chaucer (1896). Burne-Jones was knighted in 1894. Photographs by Carol Gerten-Jackson

Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898)
"I mean by a picture, a beautiful romantic dream of something that never was, never will be - in a better light than any light that ever shone - in a land that no-one can define or remember, only desire - and the forms divinely beautiful" - Edward Coley Burne-Jones Sibylla Delphica The Brazen Tower Edward Coley Burne-Jones, born in Birmingham, showed little inclination towards art as a young man, and went up to Oxford to study theology. There he met William Morris , in the same year, at the same college, studying for the same degree, and they became lifelong friends. Both of the young men gradually became less sure of their future as clergymen, and after seeing some work by Rossetti , Burne-Jones resolved to become a painter. However, he studied on for two years until he finally met Rossetti in person and asked his advice. Rossetti unhesitatingly advised him to drop the theology and become an artist. Burne-Jones became Rossetti's pupil in 1855, and Rossetti acted as his mentor in many ways, introducing him to influential friends and helping him gain commissions. One commission passed to Burne-Jones by Rossetti was for a stained-glass window, and he subsequently became a master in this art. Burne-Jones's early paintings were very Rossetti-like, but he developed his own style after travelling to Italy in 1859 and 1862. On one trip to Italy, he was accompanied by

edward burne-jones was one of the best artists of the Pre-Raphaelite movement..Category Arts Art History Artists B burne-jones, edward......Sir edward burnejones is probably the most recognized and influentialof the Pre-Raphaelite artists of the middle and late 19th century.
http://www.ragnarokpress.com/scriptorium/images/burne-jones/main.html
Sir Edward Burne-Jones is probably the most recognized and influential of the Pre-Raphaelite artists of the middle and late 19th century. His work is characterized by the unique look of the women who feature prominently in virtually every piece, by his vivid use of color and his fondness for architectural frames and backgrounds. His women are fit the classic Pre-Raphaelite model of fine features, high cheekbones and abundant, curly red or brown hair, almost always draped in intricate classical gowns. Burne-Jones was strongly influenced by the artistic styles of the Italian Reniassance and by the aesthetic ideas of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Unlike other Pre-Raphaelites like Layton and Waterhouse, Burne-Jones had a practical streak and did a number of works on commission and for publication. In addition to portraits and many unique works based on mythology and Arthurian legend, Burne-Jones worked as an illustrator in both black and white and color. He collaborated with William Morris on the Kelmscott Chaucer as well as illustrating other books for the Kelmscott Press and other publishers. Because much of his work was for speciality publication in very limited print runs, many of his published pieces were not widely circulated and are extremely hard to find.
