But magic and mystery are the key-words of the remarkable man whose sudden death we are now reporting. That this artist of the Celtic name and the Celtic nature, sprung from an ancestry among whom no artistic gift is traceable, was a paradox in his very birth. He was born at Birmingham, of all places in the world, in 1833 - he who should have seen the light among some western islands, or “Where Helicon breaks down / In cliffs to the sea.”
The Days of Creation and The Beguiling of Merlin ; and from that moment the battle was won. That is to say the movement invidiously called “aesthetic,” which had been in progress for some years past, and which had been fostered by the publication of Rossetti’s Poems and The Earthly Paradise Chant d’Amour Cophetua ; colour of the most delicate in the Pygmalion series. Was he himself satisfied? We know he was not; “I can only come near to what I wish, and am unhappy in consequence,” he said to his friend Scott; but that is only to say he was an artist, and an artist who “saw visions and dreamed dreams.”
But Burne-Jones was much more than an artist; he was a most loveable man. It might be interesting were we writing a treatise on artistic development to compare with his fellows and friends with the broad geniality of Millais, the courtly urbanity of Leighton, the thorniness of Ford Madox Brown, the alternative fits of sociability and morbidness that charmed and distressed the friends of Rossetti. But it is enough to say that Burne-Jones was unlike them all in his unfailing charm. Modest, sincere, and happy, in spite of his feeling that as an artist he had been born out of his due time, he loved his freedom and he loved his friends. He was over-persuaded into joining the Royal Academy, to please Leighton and a few others, and when he resigned he rejoiced in his recovered freedom like a child running out of school. He liked now and then to mix with the great world.

Burne-Jones, Sir Edward Coley
Burne-Jones, Sir Edward Coley , professional name of EDWARD COLEY JONES (1833-1898), English painter, designer, and illustrator, born in Birmingham and educated at the University of Oxford. Trained by the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti , Burne-Jones shared the Pre-Raphaelites' concern with restoring to art what they considered the purity of form, stylization, and high moral tone of medieval painting and design. His paintings, inspired by medieval, classical, and biblical themes, are noted for their sentimentality and dreamlike romanticized style; they are generally considered among the finest works of the Pre-Raphaelite school. They include King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid (1884, Tate Gallery, London). Burne-Jones was also prominent in the revival of medieval applied arts led by his Oxford friend the poet and artist William Morris. For Morris's firm he designed stained-glass windows, mosaics, and tapestries. His windows can be seen in many English churches, including Christ Church, Oxford, and Birmingham Cathedral. He also illustrated books of Morris's Kelmscott Press, notably Chaucer (1896). Burne-Jones was knighted in 1894. Photographs by Carol Gerten-Jackson

A brief biography of Henry Holiday, a PreRaphaelite stained glass designer, who was a friend of edward burne-jones, and who has a similar style. Examples of his work in Cumbria are given. From Visit Cumbria.

'Henry Holiday'
Henry Holiday was born on 17th June 1839 in London. In 1855, aged 16, he made his first journey to the Lake District. Throughout the rest of his life he was to make many more trips, often holidaying for long periods of time. In 1908 he designed his own home, Betty Fold, near Hawkshead. He often stayed at Brantwood , home of John Ruskin , who introduced him to Edward Burne-Jones . From 1872 onwards, he was a regular visitor at Muncaster Castle
Henry Holiday was a frequent visitor to the studios of Sir Edward Burne-Jones at his home in London, and Burne-Jones' influence on him can be felt in his work. At Burne-Jones' home aesthetic problems were discussed and exchanged by a group of artists, who pooled their ideas, and whose work had much in common. He died on April 15th, 1927, two years after his wife Kate (who did embroidery work for the William Morris Company Walker Art Gallery - Liverpool St Mary's Church - Rydal St James' Church - Buttermere Church windows in Cumbria

English symbolist. He spent the first twenty years of his life in Birmingham, an industrial town. In 1853 he went to Exeter College, Oxford, where he met William Morris, who became a lifelong friend. Both men wanted to enter the church, but after travelling in France Burne-Jones decided to become a painter in 1855.
He met Gabriel Dante Rossetti in 1856 and the latter gave him some informal lessons and influenced his style. Burne-Jones became a member of the Preraphaelite Brotherhood and travelled through Italy with Rossetti. In 1860 he married Georgia MacDonald, the sister of an old school friend.
In 1862 he visited Italy once more, this time with his wife and his patron John Ruskin. In 1870 he had an affair with his model Maria Zambaco, but he ended it because he felt remorse towards his wife, who was possibly in love with William Morris herself.
His paintings made Burne-Jones very famous and in 1894 he was created baronet. The largest collection of his work can be found at the Birmingham Art Gallery. Burne-Jones died in 1898 and was buried in Rottingdon (near Brighton), where he had a country home.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (British, 1833-1898) Browse Paintings List Available Paintings View Available Prints Biography
Edward Burne-Jones was one of the most important members of the second phase of Pre-Raphaelitism in the 19th century. He was a firm supporter of Pre-Raphaelite ideals and a close friend of Rossetti, whom he had first met in 1857 when he had helped him to decorate the walls of the Oxford Union Debating Society with frescos. Under Rossetti's influence he painted a number of highly romantic subjects taken from the Arthurian legends, as well as myths and scenes from the Bible.
Photograph by Barbara Leighton, 1890, of the artist painting The Star of Bethlehem in the garden studio of The Grange, his London house. The painting was commissioned by the Corporation of Birmingham. Born in Birmingham, Burne-Jones was originally destined for the ministry but changed course when Rossetti urged him to devote himself entirely to painting. The medieval and mystical elements in the paintings of the Pre-Raphaelites clearly appealed to someone like Burne-Jones who had always been fascinated by the mythology of the classics, which he had attempted to bring to life in such medieval romance paintings as The Beguiling of Merlin Fair Rosamund and The Madness of Sir Tristan . Most of Burne-Jones' work was a romantic dream. As he said himself in a letter that he wrote to a friend:
