The Death of the Year by Walter Crane by Walter Crane, RWS 1845-1915. Tempera and gouache on paper laid on linen, signed with monogram and dated 'Roma MDCCCLXXII': 15 1/2 x 44 3/4 inches, 39 x 114 cm. In the original oak gilt frame carved with the symbols of the zodiac and the symbols of the times of the day. Studies: An early painted study for the composition is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge from the collection of Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon where it was attributed to Frederic Lord Leighton. Provenance: Commissioned by Miss Monk, Rome 1872
Mrs Irene Wilberforce
Commentary by Hilary Morgan
The ' Death of the Year ' was painted by Crane at the end of 1872 in Rome, where the twenty-seven year old artist was enjoying an extended honeymoon. It was his most complex and ambitious imaginative work up to that date, and its qualities stem from the intensity of his first experience of Italian life and art. The artist himself described the picture: The Death of the Year was also one of the subjects painted in Rome the months following the bier of the dead year; Time as a priest reading from a service book, and love swinging a censer, being no doubt reminiscent of what one may have seen in some Roman Church (Crane, 1898). The subject derives from Shelley's Dirge for the Year , written in 1821 and published posthumously. Crane's chief inspiration was the fourth and final stanza.

Walter Crane, RWS 1845-1915: An Overview
Biography
Crane was a prolific illustrator of children's books and a painter, decorative designer and theorist on art and on society. He was a central figure in the aesthetic and the Arts and Crafts movements. In 1859 the young Crane was apprenticed to the wood engraver W. J. Linton as a-draughtsman and from 1863 began designing the Toy Books for Routledge that would do so much to improve the standard of Victorian children's book design. Japanese prints were a formative influence on Crane's bold book illustrations. Crane also began to work as a watercolour painter of poetic and"romantic subjects. With two exceptions his work was consistently rejected by the Royal Academy so he joined a coterie of like-minded artists exhibiting at the Dudley Gallery. They were united in their admiration for Burne-Jones and the critics dubbed them the 'poetry-without grammar-school'. In the 1870s Crane began to paint in tempera and in oil and exhibited regularly at the Grosvenor Gallery and later at the New Gallery. The ' Renaissance of Venus ', shown at the first exhibition of the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877, was bought by the painter G. F. Watts and is now in the Tate Gallery. This work, like most of 'Crane's mature paintings, reveals his admiration for fifteenth century Italian art. George Howard was also a friend and patron. Crane's Italian landscape paintings link him with the Etruscan school. His first and most important visit to Italy was an extended honeymoon journey between 1871 and 1873.

Walter Crane was one of the most prominent artists supporting the young socialist movements at the turn of the 19th to 20th Century. He wrote prose and poetry as well, was a pioneer in art education and is famed for his childrens' book illustrations. The texts below are taken from a critical biography by David Gerard, a former Friend of the WCML entitled:
Walter Crane and the Rhetoric of Art

Crane's life (1845-1915) spans a period of reawakening in British art, when revaluation and questioning of its social purpose were being proposed by Ruskin in theory, and by his disciple, William Morris, in theory and practice. Crane's introduction to William Morris ushered in his Socialist period, productive of some of his best work, a powerful stimulus to the emerging Labour movement, giving him a new crusading zeal expressed not only in fine art but in poems, essays and lectures, though poetry and lectures were not his forte; as Bernard Shaw put it, 'his verse was neither good enough nor bad enough to be memorable', and his lecturing only became tolerable 'when he seized a piece of chalk and drew on the backboard in illustration of his theme'. Art and politics were to blend in Crane's life from the 1880s until he died - he was an activist in the fullest sense of the word, his beliefs consonant with those of the most advanced thinkers and artists of the late nineteenth century.
Personal intimacy with Morris came gradually, after reading Morris's pamphlets denouncing the ugliness of urban living, especially the essay Art and Socialism (1884) - When Morris explicitly entered politics in 1876, Crane was ready to follow and to put his considerable powers to work in support of the vision outlined by agitators like Morris and H. M. Hyndman.

RHETORIC means of course persuasive eloquence, and in the case of Walter Crane the eloquence consorts with, is compact of his gift, that of graphic artist, and above all his sense of design, of form, of line. His use of line, that is, formal pattern - loosely described as decorative art - is matchless. More important, into his constructions whether as book illustration, painting, textiles and ceramics, wallpapers or posters, his art is instinct with more than manual skill. It includes qualities we might describe as sincerity, devotion; that is, an underlying moral sensibility. As he once declared: 'Constructive lines - simple ones which the eye can follow are as a rule beautiful lines'. His art is always, it would seem inescapably, constructive in the service of some principle, hence he speaks the language not only of line or form but of virtue, conviction. Therein lies the heart of the matter. Both technically and philosophically, for Walter Crane, the power, one could even say the sanctity, of art lies in the fundamental craft of drawing . To quote him once again: 'The basis of all art ... might be described as different kinds of drawing. Each artistic craft ... is a method of drawing, each is actually based on a drawing as a preliminary stage of its existence'.
