Edinburgh City Libraries and Information Service - Works by Children's Book Illustrators WALTER CRANE Walter Crane (1845-1915) was born in Liverpool, the son of the portrait painter and miniaturist, Thomas Crane, who encouraged his drawing talent at an early age. From 1859 - 1862 he served as an apprentice to the wood engraver, W. J. Linton, in London. He also spent time studying the works of Italian old masters and artists of the day, such as D G Rossetti and John Ruskin who was himself impressed by Crane's painting of Tennyson's Lady of Shalott, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1862. Crane was fascinated by Japanese colour prints and their influence can be seen in a series of toy books he published between 1869 and 1875, starting a new fashion in publication: these include The History of Jenny Wren and The Fairy Ship. These were engraved by Edmund Evans and printed in colours from the drawings of Crane. He would later compile various books of drawings for his own children, among them Legends for Lionel and Lancelot's Levities. By the 1880's Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott were amongst his competitors for the younger audience and Crane's last outstanding book of illustrations for children was Flora's Feast (1889). Much of his work has a strong moral, didactic element and he was involved in the establishment of the Art Workers' Guild in 1884 and with William Morris in the Kelmscott Press; as well as book illustration for adults, such as Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene, he worked on textiles and wallpaper. His position in decorative art was recognised by his appointment in 1893 as Director of Design at Manchester Municipal School of Art and in 1898 as Principal of the Royal College of Art.

This slide shows a totally designed cover of one of the Toy Books, which also advertises other books in the series, printed on yellow paper. Children are represented as young birds, and Crane may be poking fun at himself as "the Academician of the Nursery" (though nothing apparently irritated him more than hearing people say this). Like the Japanese artists whose work he admired, Crane adopted a rebus for his signature, a symbol of a crane. By this time (1875) Crane had become famous and his name was an incentive to buy the book.
A page from Baby's Own Alphabet (1875) which shows how Crane sought a design of ordered spacings and graphic patterns to illustrate the alphabet.
The cover of another Toy Book, Goody Two Shoes, (1874). The symbolic golden fruit on the tree also advertise other books in the series.
A double page spread from Goody Two Shoes which shows Crane's mixture of styles - Renaissance costumes and thatch-roofed cottages in an eighteenth-century English village setting. Because Margery Meanwell has befriended several animals (note the birds on her shoulders) she is believed to be a witch. Crane's humor is evident in his depiction of Gaffer Goosecap, a wiseacre sent to find out evidence against her.
This illustration for the nursery rhyme, "This little pig," shows many of Crane's personal trademarks -strong outline and clear bright colors. The simplicity of line and flatness of form also give this design a unique quality, which Crane used in his later work. The frontal position of the piglets and distorted floor space again recall the Japanese method of pictorial space and design, which is consistent with his theories about the child reader.

    London, , UK United Kingdom
Hidden beneath the wooden floor at South London Gallery is a huge marquetry panel designed by the 19th century artist, designer and socialist activist, Walter Crane (1845-1915). As part of London Open House 2001, the stunning original floor will be revealed for the first time in 10 years and shown alongside examples of Crane's wallpaper, costumes and book design, as well as his 1891 poster, 'The Triumph of Labour'. Founded by philanthropist William Rossiter, the South London Gallery opened on its present site in 1891. Rossiter was supported by a group of prominent contemporary artists, including John Ruskin and Frederic, Lord Leighton. The aim of the founding committee was to bring art to local working people, to create South London's own 'National Gallery'. Crane's interest in the Gallery was fostered by his socialist beliefs. On Friday 14 and Friday 21 September, Chris Jordan, Curator of the Permanent Collection, will give a lunchtime talk at the Gallery at 1pm. Admission Free

The University of Manchester acquires the Walter Crane archive Posted on Tuesday May 21, @11:14AM
The archive contains a wealth of material from the studio of Walter Crane, one of the most important and influential British arts and crafts artists of the last century. Drawings, original designs for book illustrations, paintings, diaries, notebooks, photographs and press cuttings are included, spanning Crane’s entire career. The archive provides an insight not only into Crane’s finished work, but also into his motivation, client network and the artistic, family, political and social contexts in which he worked.
The archive has been acquired with the assistance of a grant of £282,356 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and further grants of £36,675 from the National Art Collections Fund, £11,861 from the Friends of the Whitworth and £10,000 from the Friends of the National Libraries. Tony Jones, Heritage Lottery Fund Manager for the North West, remarked: ‘At the Heritage Lottery Fund we are excited to have played our part in securing such a comprehensive record of Walter Crane's work. The collection brings to life his political and social vision as well as his vital contributions to the world of art and design. We're delighted that people will now be able to see and enjoy his works first-hand in Manchester.’
Minister of State for the Arts, Tessa Blackstone, placed a temporary bar on the export of the archive in February 2002, due to its importance as a major resource for the study of Walter Crane as artist, designer and educator, and its outstanding significance for the study of British art and design of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This enabled the Whitworth Art Gallery and the John Rylands Library to bid for funding to assist with its purchase.

Crane collaborated with J.M.D.Meiklejohn, a Professor of Education and Language at St. Andrew's University to produce this reading primer.Text and illustrations are interdependent in a scheme designed to teach children to read by associating whole words with pictures. Notice the instructions printed on the endpapers as to how the book should be used. The colourful images were a welcome innovation; previous educational books for children had tended to be worthy and dull. 1880 saw the final stage in the establishment of universal and free education in England: this first generation were to benefit from The Golden Primer and Nellie Dale's Steps to Reading 1898, also decorated by Crane.
