An Italian, born in 1888 and raised partly in Greece - where his father, an engineer, planned and built railroads - he led a productive life, almost Picassoan in length; he died in 1978. He had studied in Munich, and in his early twenties, under the spell of the Symbolist painter Surrealism "This phase of his work - the so-called pittura metafisica - lasted until about 1918. Thereafter, de Chirico changed. He wanted to become, and almost succeeded in becoming, a classicist. He imagined himself to be the heir of Titian . Rejected by the French avant-garde, he struck back with disputatious critiques of modernist degeneracy; for the next sixty years of his life, he remained an obdurate though not very skillful academic painter. He even took to signing his work "Pictor Optimus" ("the best painter"). The sheer scale of his failure - if that is the word for it - is almost as fascinating as the brilliance of his early talent. Naturally, a great deal of both has been hidden by the polemical dust, and last week [ note - this essay was originally published in 1982 ] New York's Museum of Modern Art unveiled its effort to stabilize and make sense of de Chirico's reputation with a show organized by William Rubin, the museum's director of painting and sculpture.

In 1900 he began studies at the Athens Polytechnic Institute and attended evening classes in drawing from the nude. About 1906 he moved to Munich, where he attended the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste. At this time he became interested in the art of Arnold Böcklin and Max Klinger and the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche and Arthur Schopenhauer. De Chirico moved to Milan in 1909, to Florence in 1910, and to Paris in 1911. In Paris he was included in the Salon d'Automne in 1912 and 1913 and in the Salon des Indépendants in 1913 and 1914. As a frequent visitor to Guillaume Apollinaire's weekly gatherings, he met Constantin Brancusi , André Derain, Max Jacob, and others. Because of the war, in 1915 De Chirico returned to Italy, where he met Filippo de Pisis in 1916 and Carlo Carrà in 1917; they formed the group that was later called the Scuola Metafisica. The artist moved to Rome in 1918, and was given his first solo exhibition at the Casa d'Arte Bragaglia in that city in the winter of 1918-19. In this period he was one of the leaders of the Gruppo Valori Plastici, with whom he showed at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin. From 1920 to 1924 he divided his time between Rome and Florence. A solo exhibition of de Chirico's work was held at the Galleria Arte in Milan in 1921, and he participated in the Venice Biennale for the first time in 1924. In 1925 the artist returned to Paris, where he exhibited that year at Léonce Rosenberg's Galerie l'Effort Moderne. In Paris his work was shown at the Galerie Paul Guillaume in 1926 and 1927 and at the Galerie Jeanne Bucher in 1927- In 1928 he was given solo shows at the Arthur Tooth Gallery in London and the Valentine Gallery in New York. biografie GIORGIO DE CHIRICO Volos, 1888 - Roma, 1978 «Pittore e scrittore, filosofo e poeta»: così lo definisce Isabella Far, moglie e collaboratrice dell'artista, introducendo il volume edito da Mondadori sulla vita e le opere di De Chirico un anno dopo la sua morte. Certo la sua opera è al centro di discussioni e polemiche: pregiudizi e incomprensioni permangono nonostante le analisi di ormai numerosi critici. C'è chi fa terminare la sua arte all'epoca metafisica: sarebbe troppo semplicistica la soluzione e la comprensione di un artista che di se stesso dice «Et quidi amabo nisi quod aenigma est? » (E cosa amerò se non ciò che fosse enigma?). La sua vita fu lunga, ricca di esperienze personali e di lavoro; passò attraverso situazioni storiche e artistiche diverse e nonostante tutto «l'arte è stata per lui quotidiano apprendimento. In un epoca che ha rifiutato e tradito la grande tradizione pittorica del passato, De Chirico è il pittore che ha avuto la volontà e la capacità di rispettarla» scrive ancora Isabella Far.

Il padre Evaristo , originario di Palermo con la sua presenza forte e distaccata lascerà un 'impronta notevole insieme alla madre su entrambi i fratelli Giorgio e Andrea (quest'ultimo in arte Alberto Savinio). Da giovanissimo studiava privatamente con il disegnatore greco Marrudis,poi con Barbieri e lo svizzero Filleron.In seguito studierà ancora disegno per 4 anni al politecnico di Atene, per poi frequentare un corso di pittura con il ritrattista Jacobidis, proveniente dall'accademia di Monaco. Aveva 16 anni quando gli morì il padre.Così, la famiglia De Chirico resterà ancora per poco in Grecia, poi , nel 1905 tornerà in Italia per stabilirsi a Firenze.Nel capoluogo toscano trascorre un 'intero anno precisamente il periodo tra l'estate 1906 e l'autunno 1907.E' durante questo soggiorno che De Chirico venne a contatto (frequentando assiduamente i musei)con la pittura di Bocklin e Klinger, e con l'opera letteraria di Papini, Nietzche e Shopenhauer.

Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) Volo, Grecia (nacionalizado italiano) 1913-La incertidumbre del poeta 1914-Love song 1914-The Philosopher's Conquest Biografía: Pintor italiano de origen griego, que creó la escuela de pintura metafísica. Nació en Volo, Grecia, y era hijo de un ingeniero italiano. Estudió arte en Atenas y en Munich, donde recibió una gran influencia de las obras alegóricas del pintor suizo del siglo XIX Arnold Böcklin . En Turín, Florencia y París, donde se instaló en 1911, pintó paisajes urbanos desérticos, como Plaza de Roma (1913, colección particular, Milán) y Misterio y melancolía de una calle (1914, colección particular, Connecticut). Estas primeras obras metafísicas evocan un mundo onírico misterioso y amenazador a través de acentuados contrastes de luces y sombras y de una perspectiva exagerada. Mientras hacía el servicio militar en Ferrara en 1915, de Chirico conoció al pintor futurista Carlo Carrà ; juntos fundaron la revista Pittura Metafisica en 1920. Entre 1915 y 1925 de Chirico pintó extraños maniquíes sin rostros y naturalezas muertas en las que yuxtaponía objetos que no tenían ningún tipo de relación entre sí, técnica que luego adoptarían los surrealistas (Las musas inquietantes, 1917, colección particular, Milán). Entre 1924 y 1930 proporcionó un gran impulso al movimiento surrealista e influyó en artistas del movimiento de la talla de Yves Tanguy y Salvador Dalí . A mediados de la década de 1930 regresó a Italia, abandonó ese estilo y adoptó uno más académico que lo convirtió en un retratista de éxito. ©
