In order to supplement his art studies, Degas traveled extensively, including trips to Naples, Florence, and Rome (where he lived for three years), in order to observe and copy the works of such Renaissance masters as Sandro Botticelli, Andrea Mantegna, and Nicolas Poussin. From his early classical education, Degas learned a good deal about drawing figures, a skill he used to complete some impressive family portraits before 1860, notably The Belleli Family In 1861, Degas returned to Paris, where he executed several "history paintings," or works with historical or Biblical themes, which were then the most sought-after paintings by serious art patrons and particularly the prestigious state-run art show, the Salon, held each year in Paris. He also began copying works by the Old Masters from the Louvre, which he would continue doing for many years. With his historical paintings (including 1861's Daughter of Jephthah , based on an incident from the Old Testament) and his finely-wrought portraits of friends, family members, and clients, the young Degas quickly established a reputation among French art circles and never suffered from the financial problems that plagued many of his contemporaries.

Edgar Degas
Self-portrait Some art historians have difficulty fitting Edgar Degas into a more narrowly conceived definition of Impressionism; but remaining behind the movement Edgar Degas was its dedicated driving force. Degas had distinction, spirit, and was not afraid of the obstacles he might encounter. He was one of the great ones, one of the brusque characters of the time, who could be critical and curt to an absurd extreme. He was an artist: he was possessed. He worked hard at psychologically precise, realistic portraits, observing light and colour very closely. The hallmark of Degas' art was world of theatre, dance and music. He devoted most of his attention to ballerinas practising under their master or rehearsing on stage. Early in his life Degas began to have problems with eyesight. That's why he gave up painting in favour of pastels and charcoal drawings. Degas also sculpted dancers and bathers in wax and clay. Once blindness no longer permitted drawing, all that was left was to work with his fingers.

Musée d'Orsay,Paris Degas is usually classed with the impressionists, and he exhibited with them in seven of the eight impressionist exhibitions. However, his training in classical drafting and his dislike of painting directly from nature produced a style that represented a related alternative to impressionism. Degas was born into a well-to-do banking family on July 19, 1834, in Paris. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under a disciple of the famous French classicist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, where Degas developed the great drawing ability that was to be a salient characteristic of his art. After 1865, under the influence of the budding impressionist movement, he gave up academic subjects to turn to contemporary themes. But, unlike the impressionists, he preferred to work in the studio and was uninterested in the study of natural light that fascinated them. He was attracted by theatrical subjects, and most of his works depict racecourses, theaters, cafés, music halls, or boudoirs. Degas was a keen observer of humanity—particularly of women, with whom his work is preoccupied—and in his portraits as well as in his studies of dancers, milliners, and laundresses, he cultivated a complete objectivity, attempting to catch his subjects in poses as natural and spontaneous as those recorded in action photographs.

Since the characters are known, this picture could be considered as an example of Degas's portraiture or, alternatively, as a characteristic glimpse of the Parisian café. The woman is the actress Ellen Andrée, the man Marcellin Desboutin, painter, engraver and, at the same time, celebrated Bohemian character. The café where they are taking their refreshment is the Café de la Nouvelle-Athènes. Desboutin - a popular figure - seems to have led the move of those concerned with the arts from their previous rendez-vous, the Café Guerbois, to the Nouvelle-Athènes. It was frequented by Manet and Degas, by some critics and literary men as well as painters and had an interested observer from across the Channel in the young George Moore. The painting shows Degas's favourite device of placing the figures off-centre with a large intervening area of space in the foreground. A forceful and original composition results from the mode of arrangement and the dark but harmoniously related tones of colour and shadow. © 11 Sep 1995

Paul-Andre Lemoisne catalogued some ninety-one works in this category, spanning the period from 1860 to 1900a number that did not include Degas's equestrian waxes and bronzesand they embrace a range of sizes and mediums. As with the Paris Opera, the spectacle of the turf gave Degas the base material from which to forge images of modern life in an alloy that fused references to the art of the past with details observed from life and scrupulously documented. But more than any other of his subjects, this was a genre that fed upon itself and spawned countless variations and adjustments. From a repertory established very early, Degas proceeded to select individual jockeys and rearrange them, to repeat poses and refine them, until this hermetic world lost all connection with the reality of the race track... This diminutive composition of Race Horses , which falls toward the end of the first phase in this development, is immediately distinguished by its unusual support. It is pastel, and not oil, on panel: the wood here, possibly light mahogany, is the kind that might be used for cigar boxes. Although pastel on panel is not a unique combination, it is extremely rare in Degas's oeuvre, and testifies to his continuing pleasure in experimenting with techniques and supports.

. . a festmény elsõsorban a mûvészi képzelet terméke.

Edgar Degas: a biography
Hilaire Germain Edgar Degas b. July 19, 1834, d. Paris September 27, 1917 Degas was born into a well-off banking family. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under a disciple of the French classicist, Ingres, where he developed the great drawing ability that was to be a hallmark of his art. After 1865, under the influence of the budding impressionist movement, he turned to contemporary themes. Unlike the impressionists, he preferred to work in the studio, not sharing their fascination with the study of natural light. Most of his works depict racecourses, theaters, cafés, music halls, or boudoirs. Above all, Degas was a keen observer of women - and in his paintings he caught his subjects in natural - almost photographic - poses. His study of Japanese prints led him to experiment with unusual visual angles and asymmetrical compositions. He made art from things that no painter had fully used before: the way a discarded dress, still warm from the now naked body, keeps some of the wearer's shape; the unconcern of a dancer scratching her back between practice sessions. Degas is usually classed with the impressionists, and exhibited with them in seven of the eight impressionist exhibitions. However, his training in classical drafting and his dislike of painting directly from nature was to produce a related alternative to impressionism. based on the fusion and enhancement of existing themes (the classical and romantic) in French art.
