Barbara Hepworth
Barbara Hepworth, along with Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson, was at the center of a group of artists who created a revolutionary new approach to European abstract sculpture of the 1930s. Characterized by highly simplified, organic forms, with affinities to the work of Moore and Hans Arp, Hepworth's abstractions are imbued with a dignified presence that has often been compared with the serene power of classical sculpture
Born in Yorkshire, England, Hepworth's family encouraged her talents from an early age and provided her every educational opportunity. Hepworth first attended the Leeds School of Art in 1920, where she became interested in the sculptural interplay of mass and negative space. The following year, she enrolled in the Sculpture School of the Royal College of Art in London. While at the College, she became friendly with fellow student Henry Moore and began a working relationship that would be of great significance to both artists' oeuvres throughout their careers. Upon graduating in 1924, Hepworth was granted a scholarship to travel and study painting and sculpture in Siena, Florence, and Rome. In Italy she experimented with direct carving techniques, which obviated the need for preliminary maquettes. The freedom of this approach gave her a new confidence in her abilities to bring out the best in her materials.

Three Forms Alternative Title Date Artist Hepworth, Barbara Jocelyn Dame (1903-1975) Type sculpture Medium wood Dimensions 68.6cms x 66cms Category abstract Notes During the 1920’s the artist had studied marble carving in Italy before moving to London in 1928. Here she met the artist Ben Nicholson, eventually marrying him in 1933, and with him and others went on to occupy a position at the forefront of the modern movement in England. By the mid 1930’s Hepworth’s sculpture had become completely abstract, based on the interplay of scale, weight, form and texture of objects. From then on her work was pre-occupied with a limited range of primary forms such as the ovoid, the sphere and the cylinder (seen here) which were to become the basis for most of her work from this time onwards. Following the outbreak of the Second World War she moved with Nicholson and their triplets to Cornwall. The atmosphere and appearance of the Cornish landscape subsequently informed the way in which she approached the carving of new forms, proclaiming in 1970, I think of the works as objects which rise out of the land or the sea, mysteriously.

About the gallery
Barbara Hepworth Museum
Barbara Hepworth died in a fire in her studio in St Ives on 20 May 1975, and in her will asked her executors to consider 'the practicability of establishing a permanent exhibition of some of my works in Trewyn Studio and its garden'. The result is the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, managed by Tate St Ives. The museum has a unique and peculiarly special atmosphere. It was once Hepworth's home and studio and so as the visitor, you walk around and through her bedrooms and kitchen, sitting room and bathroom which has all now been changed into a gallery. The museum is one of the main incentives to go to St Ives. Barbara Hepworth was a major, important and influential British artist of the 20th century. Her sculptures are affected by the shapes and textures of the Cornish landscape and she was one of the first artists to make completely non-representational works. But somehow, these abstract forms never lacked a human significance and referred to relationships between people - particularly her relationship with her children - that of the mother and child. Hepworth's work succeeded because she created an abstract beauty and a perfection of form that is classical and not romantic in conception.

British, 1903 - 1975 Barbara Hepworth was primarily a sculptor whose work met with great success. She was married to Ben Nicholson and together they made up the nucleus of the St Ives group. In 1933 she and Nicholson visted Paris where they met Picasso and Braque but also, more importantly for her, Jean Arp and Brancusi and it was the work of these two artists, and Nicholson, which had the most influence on her.
In 1968 and 1970 she drew two groups of lithographs at the Curwen Studio which broke new ground for her. In concept they were sculptural but as prints they became important examples of abstract art in Britain at the time. Lithography best suited her feeling for the creation of shapes with graphic lines. These lithographs have become increasingly more scarce and sought after.
