The studio and sculpture garden owned by noted 20th century sculptor Barbara Hepworth are maintained by the Tate St. Ives museum as part of its committment to preserve and offer access to the best of modern British art. Hepworth created the garden before her death, and asked that the sculpture be displayed exactly as she had placed it. Hepworth lived in St. Ives from 1939 until her tragic death in a studio fire in 1975. She was drawn to southern Cornwall, as many artists are, by the wonderful light for which the area is famous. Most of her sculpture can be characterised as abstract; she preferred to create impressions of objects rather than portray the objects themselves. She worked in a variety of mediums, and sculptures in wood, stone, and bronze are on display, as well as paintings, drawings, and archival material.

Hepworth, a contemporary of Henry Moore, was a major force in the development of postwar sculpture in Britain. These cast bronze sculptures represent her development away from wood carving and reveal both her postwar exploration of fluid, lyrical forms, and her late style, characterized by a renewed interest in regularized geometric compositions. This is a house where Barbara Hepworth lived and worked, and has been changed into a museum since she died. You can see her old workshop and many of her sculptures in her house and garden.
There are few facilities as it has not changed much since she lived there. There is a toilet and a small shop area. Although the museum is clean and safe, there is steep steps and narrow paths to the gardens, so access for the elderly may be difficult.
We enjoyed the workshop and being able to feel the sculptures in the garden. It was also good to be able to see how she worked and where she got her ideas for her sculptures from.
