PISSARRO, CAMILLE
Pissarro is represented in the Caillcbotte room at the Luxembourg, and in almost every collection of impressionist paintings. A number of his finest works are in the collection of M. DurandRue! in Paris. PISTIL, a term in botany for the female or seed-bearing organ of a flower (q.v). The Lat. pistillum (diminutive from pi,tsere, pisturn, to pound), a pestle, a club-headed instrument used for crushing or braying substances in a mortar (qv.), was taken as the name for ‘this organ from its similarity in shape, and thence adapted in Fr. pistil about the middle of the 18th century. In its complete form a pistil consists of three parts— ovary, at the base, containing the bodies which become seeds, style (Gr. ari3Xoc, pillar), and stigma (Gr. ~TLyua, mark, ~TL~ELp, to brand), the, part which in impregnation receives the pollen. ‘I’he city is still surrounded by walls, dating from shortly aftet the siege of 1302—06; while two inner lines of streets represent two earlier and inner lines of wall. The word “pistol” is derived (apparently through pistolese, a dagger—dagger and pistol being both small arms) from Pistoia, where that weapon was largely manufactured in the middle ages.

Camille Pissarro
Self-portrait
Within Impressionist "family" Camille Pissarro played the role of the best teacher, as well as that of the good shepherd who guided the strays back to the flock, the better to form a common front against all those who would have liked to see the group break up. Pissarro, along with Degas and Monet, was the most active in collective Impressionist exhibitions. Moreover he was the only one to participate in all of them. Through all his life he was very close to the younger generation of painters. He was quick to take an interest in Gauguin, at another moment he gave in to the enticement of the scientific conceptions of Seurat's pointilism. Pissarro was a commited, discreet and open man. As a painter he deliberately chose the most humble and desolate subjects mostly in the countryside at Louveciennes and Pontoise.

The Red Roofs
1877 (220 Kb); Oil on canvas, 54.5 x 65.6 cm (21 1/2 x 25 3/4"); Musee d'Orsay, Paris This painting is certainly one of Pissarro's masterpieces and an illustration of some of the essential aims of Impressionism . It gives a dual sensationof truth to a particular region and aspect of nature so exactly realized that the spectator seems transported to the scene; and of color that, while creating this effect, has a vibration and lyrical excitement of its own. Pissarro has been described as an unequal painter but if this was from one standpoint a shortcoming it had also an advantage in enabling him to attain exceptional heights from time to time. The low tones of his Orchard at Pontoise might lead one to think of him as one confined by a particular mood or capacity of vision yet in The Red Roofs , painted in the same year, the low tones are exchanged for brilliance of light, the grave utterance of the rural philosopher turns into song. The effect can be appreciated without analysis but it is enlightening as to his method and general approach to consider the picture in relation to the advice he gave at a later date to a young painter, Louis Le Bail, whose unpublished notes of conversation with Pissarro were summarized by John Rewald in his History of Impressionism : `Do not define too closely the outlines of things; it is the brushstroke of the right value and color which should produce the drawing'. A look at this painting shows how Pissarro made this his own practice. `Don't work bit by bit but paint everything at once by placing tones everywhere with brushstrokes of the right color and value...' This has an important bearing on the color harmony so splendidly carried out here. Color is not localized but is picked up like a melody in various parts of the canvasthe blue of the sky in the blue of doors and shadows, the red of the roofs in field and foreground earthso that all comes into happy relation.

Le Pont-Neuf: un matin d'hiver
Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Thanks to Linda Duke , Director of Education, Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion. Painted by Camille Pissarro near the end of his life, The Pont Neuf: A Winter Morning The painting poignantly contrasts the momentary effects of a winter sunrise with the lasting monuments of the city. The bare tree branches, the paving stones, and the distant buildings are briefly touched by the still-hidden sun, which warms and softens the gray chill with a suffused glow. As people go about their early-morning business and the river Seine flows strongly but calmly by, everything is dappled with pink or red lights and blue shadows or reflections from the sky. The unusually pristine condition of this painting, on a canvas that has never been relined, provides a rare opportunity to appreciate the textured surface, which carries an air of spontaneity for all its analytical craft. © 10 Dec 1995

Pierre Auguste Renoir , and Alfred Sisley, he began to revise his method of landscape painting, privileging the role of color in his expression of natural phenomena and employing smaller patches of paint. This artistic circle was dispersed by the Franco-Prussian War, which Pissarro fled by moving to London in 1870-71. There he met Paul Durand-Ruel, the Parisian dealer who would become an ardent supporter of Pissarro and his fellow Impressionists. Pissarro participated in his last official Salon in 1870. Paul Gauguin Pissarro experienced somewhat of an artistic crisis in 1885. As he had done consistently throughout his career, he opened himself up to fresh influences by meeting with the younger generation, this time with Paul Signac and Georges Seurat , who were experimenting with a divisionist technique rooted in the scientific study of optics.

He formed friendships with Paul Cézanne Claude Monet , Sisley and Renoir and was mentor to Cezanne and Gauguin . By the late 1860s, his powerful landscapes were praised by the prominent critic Emile Zola. Pissarro was the only artist of the Impressionist Group to exhibit in all eight Impressionist exhibitions. Everyday Truths Beneath the Everyday
John Haber
in New York City
Camille Pissarro
The Jewish Museum may lie at the remote northern end of New York's "museum mile," but it has no need to hide its ambitions. In 1994 it completed restoration of its magnificent 1908 structure. On year later, it has taken on the first career examination of an Impressionist. From the outside, the former Warburg mansion stands in all its Gothic fancy. C. P. H. Gilbert already had a string of midtown residences to his credit when he began work. Nope, he was not Cass Gilbert, famous for the Woolworth building. His sense of design was quite strong enough, however, and the charming decoration of the uppermost story somehow never weighs down this large corner facade.
Undivided loyalties
The oldest Impressionist, Pissarro was also the first to lose interest in the official Salon. Bearded like an Old Testament prophet, he made his career learning from younger men. The only painter stubborn enough to show in every single Impressionist exhibition, from the very first , he nonetheless adopted each new movement, right through Pointillism. As cosmopolitan as his styles, he somehow managed to remain an outsider, as

Boulevard Montmartre at Night
Pissarro captures the feel of life in Paris at the turn of the century. This busy boulevard in the Montmartre district is lined by wide new sidewalks. Gas street lamps, a recent invention, light the way for horse-drawn carriages. Shoppers hurry past brightly lit shop windows. Modern Paris In 1853, Emperor Napoleon III and Baron Haussmann set out to redesign the city of Paris. Shabby old buildings were torn down and replaced with 40,000 new buildings, including grand hotels, theaters, apartment buildings and department stores (a new invention). Narrow, winding streets were replaced by 85 miles of wide tree-lined boulevards graced with gas street lamps, sidewalks and even public toilets. The redesign of Paris was not just to make the city more beautiful. Not long before, the citizens of Paris had revolted against the government, barricading many streets and shooting at the government soldiers. Napoleon III knew that wide boulevards would be much harder to barricade. Also, with wider streets, the army would be able to move quickly throughout the city.
