Action painting
Pollock was the first ``all-over'' painter, pouring paint rather than using brushes and a palette, and abandoning all conventions of a central motif. He danced in semi-ecstasy over canvases spread across the floor, lost in his patternings, dripping and dribbling with total control. He said: ``The painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through.'' He painted no image, just ``action'', though ``action painting'' seems an inadequate term for the finished result of his creative process. Lavender Mist is 3 m long (nearly 10 ft), a vast expanse on a heroic scale. It is alive with colored scribble, spattered lines moving this way and that, now thickening, now trailing off to a slender skein. The eye is kept continually eager, not allowed to rest on any particular area. Pollock has put his hands into paint and placed them at the top right an instinctive gesture eerily reminiscent of cave painters who did the same. The overall tone is a pale lavender, maide airy and active. At the time Pollock was heiled as the greatest American painter, but there are already those who feel his work is not holding up in every respect. Lee Krasner (1908-84), who married Pollock in 1944, was not celebrated at all during his lifetime (cut short in 1956 by a fatal car crash), but it was actually she who first started covering the canvas with a passionate flurry of marks. The originality of her vision, its stiff integrity and its great sense of internal cohesion, is now beginning to be recognized.

Die Rhetorik der Abstraktion.
http://www.txt.de/nbk/99_1/jackroth.htm

30. Interview With Ed Harris Starring In Pollock
Privy Magazine's interview with Ed Harris on playing jackson pollock.

Interview with Ed Harris
starring in Pollock An Intuitive Journey E
d Harris wears all black pants, t-shirt, scarf, overcoat. As we sit for almost an hour at the Four Seasons in Washington DC, he doesn't remove any of this ensemble, including the scarf. He also doesn't take a cigarette break, as I was advised he might. He is one of the most focused people I have ever talked to: his famous blue eyes are indeed electric, but it's more than that. Attentive, he's also restless, shifting on the overstuffed sofa, but never in a way that suggests he's bored or his mind is wandering. Rather, it's as if he is intent on containing what seems a tremendous energy, which he does with good humor and much warmth. Harris is here to talk about his directorial debut, Pollock , a project he worked on for some ten years, on and off. While it was a struggle, to be sure, he now looks back on the experience and is glad and also, perhaps, a little surprised that he took on the challenge. He's always been one for challenges. Born in Tenafly, New Jersey in 1950, Harris attended Columbia University for two years, then studied drama at the University of Oklahoma, completing his BFA at California's Institute of the Arts. In 1983, he won the Obie Award for Outstanding Actor, for his work in Sam Shepard's Fool for Love , and then more awards for his stage work in New York and Los Angeles. In 1983, he dazzled movie audiences and critics with his performances in

Last Modified 04/05/2002 12:33:12 PM EST Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) is regarded as the undisputed leader of the Abstract Expressionist movement. In 1945, he married fellow artist Lee Krasner (1908-1984) and moved from New York City to Long Island's East End. With a loan from art dealer Peggy Guggenheim, they purchased a small homestead on one and a quarter acres overlooking Accabonac Creek in The Springs, near East Hampton . Here, in this serene community of farmers and baymen, Pollock created his masterpieces - works whose innovative style and technique stunned the art world and continue to challenge viewers today.

The Joy
of
Painting
When you abstract the essence of music and visual art, an underlying structure, form and rhythm can be discerned. The notes, rhythm and tempo of a musical piece can evoke thoughts, feelings and sensations, much the same as colors, texture, strokes and shapes in a painting. This is certainly true in my art, which is a mirroring of my internal landscape as well as a reflection of what is happening externally. My paintings, because they are abstract, are essentially energy made visible. They are an exploration of the interplay between form and formlessness, emergence and dissolution, using color, texture, and the strokes of the palette knife upon the canvas.

Artist and aesthetic realism consultant Dorothy Koppelman explains jackson pollock's torment and why his work is beautiful.

“In reality opposites are one; art shows this". Eli Siegel
CONTACT
Jackson Pollockand True and False Ambition: The Urgent Difference By Dorothy Koppelman I learned this from Eli Siegel in an Aesthetic Realism lesson and it is written down in capital letters in my notes: "THE BIGGEST SUCCESS THAT WE LIKE THE WORLD THROUGH KNOWING IT." I learned that the only way to like the world honestly is to see it as a oneness of opposites; and further, that seeing it this way is the means to honestly liking yourself. The more I study this Aesthetic Realism principle stated by Mr. Siegel, the more I am thrilled at its truth: "The world, art, and self explain each other: each is the aesthetic oneness of opposites." I shall be talking tonight about my life, what a woman learned in Aesthetic Realism consultations and about the famous 20th century American artist whose works, as one critic put it, "embody the supreme level of pictorial ambition," and whose tumultuous life is the subject of the recent film made by Ed Harris.
