FEATURED ARTIST : Jackson Pollock Jackson Pollock was born in Wyoming in 1912. He had five brothers, and his family moved all over the western states when he was growing up. His mother encouraged all her sons to be artists when they were little. Three of Jackson's older brothers became artists, too. When they lived in California and Arizona, Jackson and his brothers would watch the Native Americans perform their ceremonial dances and making sand paintings. Jackson developed a deep respect for Native American culture and would later incorporate into his paintings stuff that he learned from them.
Then he remembered the sand paintings and wondered if he might be able to express his feelings by dripping paint!! He also joined the workshop of a Mexican mural painter named David Siqueiros and they experimented with new ways of painting. Jackson liked it. He began tacking his own canvases to the floor and then he dripped and splattered and swirled paint on the canvases as a way to show his feelings. Soon his paintings looked very different from anything he had ever done before. He was making his own way of painting and it later became known as "Action Painting."
He married his girlfriend, Lee Krasner, in 1945. She was an artist, too. Jackson's art studio was in the barn and Lee's was in a bedroom in the house. Jackson Pollock died in a car accident in 1956 when he was forty-five years old. But his art greatly influenced a new group of artist who flocked to New York, making it a center of the art world.

Jackson Pollock: A Retrospective
In Jackson Pollock's hands, paint took on the delicacy, power, and variety of a human form. He laid it on with care, in dabs of black and skeins of intense color. He let it run off as he circled a canvas, as if it flowed from the motion of his body. On that enormous scale, it accumulates the debris of an artist's life, from ashes and canvas ends to the sober gray of Long Island sunlight. At once palpable, fluid, and transparent to the light, it gives to an entire museum wall the brightness, odor, and ordinary necessity of fresh house paint. After half a century of pattern painting and parody, Pollock's drip paintings can be seen at last as a lot more than drips, but they remain the most defiantly abstract art ever made. And yet his retrospective begins with the small, clumsy image of a boy's face, his own. Achingly shy, he has the dark rings around his eyes of a battered child. The painting, Pollock's only known self-portrait, could stand for all the weaknesses of his art, right up to the desperately few final years that made him famous. Well past the excuses of student age, he settles for unpromising class work. The portrait's derivative style lies somewhere between Expressionism and Sunday painting. By painting himself years younger, the victim of a father Pollock in fact hardly knew, he combines evasion with a severe case of self-dramatization.

Jackson's fractals
As recent articles in PASS Maths have shown, combining the computational powers of modern digital computers with the complex beauty of mathematical fractals has produced some entrancing artwork during the past two decades. Intriguingly, recent research at the Physics Department of the University of New South Wales, Australia, has suggested that some works by the American artist Jackson Pollock also reflect a fractal structure. Pollock created many of his works by dripping paint onto enormous canvases, leading to some riotously complex images. While Pollock himself felt that these works reflected "pure harmony", critics have dismissed them as "mere unorganised explosions of random energy". Having examined a number of such paintings produced between 1943 and 1952, the researchers are inclined to agree with Pollock, finding fractal relationships rather than "unorganised explosions" in the paint-drip works. A feature of fractals is self-similarity on multiple scales: a small chunk of a fractal, scaled up, has similar features to a larger one. The researchers noticed this feature in the paint-splatter works, and analysed a quantity called the

Highlight Jackson Pollock's Galaxy
Outer Space and Artist's Space in Pollock's Cosmic Paintings
(abstract) Kirsten A. Hoving Among the early "breakthrough" paintings in Jackson Pollock’s development of abstract expressionism is a small canvas entitled Galaxy. Painted in 1947 with oil, aluminum paint, and gravel on canvas, it is an early example of the drip paintings for which the artist would become famous. With its overlapping skeins of paint, the work defies traditional Renaissance perspective to present an ambiguous sense of space that hovers between the flat space of the two-dimensional canvas and the illusion of the infinite space of the cosmos. The paper argues that astronomical space was important in the evolution of Pollock’s mature style. By examining Galaxy, together with three other canvases from 1947, Reflection of the Big Dipper, Shooting Star, and Comet, one sees that the night sky had a profound impact on Pollock’s conception of space in painting. Furthermore, in the late 1940s there was unusual cometic and meteoric activity, widely reported in newspapers and magazines. Other painters (and poets) also pursued cosmological themes. Pollock’s search for ways to "express this age, through the airplane, the atom bomb, the radio" led to a new conception of artistic space by employing the metaphor of outer space. Of special interest to devotees and those familiar with the work of these two artists are these interviews. The first, recorded by a young neighbor in late 1950, queries Pollock about his painting; only two recordings of Pollock's voice are known, so this is especially useful for art historians. The Krasner interview was done by Marc Miller, an art historian and critic, when her one-woman exhibit opened in 1982. Since Krasner died in 1984, this conversation is regarded as a summation of her life work. The booklet features biographical material with photographs and color reproductions of the artists' work. MoMA Online Jackson Pollock: Modernism's Shooting Star Some 40 years later, Pollock is the subject of another major exhibition at MOMA. The retrospective, which will be on view from November 1 through February 2, 1999, features more than 150 paintings and works on paper executed during a career of approximately 25 years. Born in Cody, Wyoming, in 1912, Pollock was raised mainly in California and from there made his way to New York City, where he studied with artist Thomas Hart Benton. The paintings he produced during the early years variously reflect the influence of Benton, Albert Pinkham Ryder and the Mexican muralists. They also reveal hints of American Indian symbology, Jungian archetypes and the work of Picasso and other European modernists. Apart form a few sympathetic early reviews by Robert Coates and Manny Farber one should not forget the bumpy start to his career. Reviews ranged from those who saw in his art America's catching up with the 21st century and those who could not fathom what it was in his drips and spatters that could be called art. Slowly the mainstream press came to accept what the finer critics saw in his work and he is now known as one of as probably the greatest twentieth century American painter.

"When I am in a painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of 'get acquainted' period that I see what I have been about. I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc, because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well." "When I am painting I have a general notion as to what I am about. I can control the flow of paint: there is no accident."
