Natural beauty
Research suggests that the abstract works of artists such as Jackson Pollock are pleasing because they imitate the natural world.
13 September 2000 OLIVER DE PEYER Pollock's 'Yellow, Grey, Black' Jackson Pollock's paintings are aesthetically pleasing because they obey fractal rules similar to those of the natural world. So says Henrik Jeldtoft Jensen, a mathematician at London's Imperial College. Pollock, a pioneer of 'abstract expressionism' and one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, is well known for his technique of splashing lines of paint, apparently at random, onto a canvas. Yet the end results often have a haunting, naturalistic quality to them. This is probably because these lines have fractal properties, Jensen told the British Association for the Advancement of Science's annual festival in London this week. Jensen invokes the cauliflower to explain fractal geometry. No matter how many pieces you break a cauliflower into, all the pieces resemble a whole cauliflower. The same goes for many natural features such as forests, rivers, clouds and mountains as you home in on them. Since Pollock's paintings have a similar fractal nature, Jensen claims that they are not truly abstract at all. Consciously or unconsciously, Pollock was imitating the patterns of nature. Jensen contrasts this with the abstract work of Kadinsky, with its harsh Euclidean geometry of triangles, lines and other shapes confined in the frame of the painting.

Lesson Plan: Feelings in Color
Mark Rothko (American, born Russia, 1903-1970). Orange and Yellow, 1956, oil on canvas, 91 x 71" Gift of Seymour H. Knox, 1956 INTRODUCTION This lesson is an exercise in looking and thinking, making comparisons and connections. It relates to elements in all categories of the comprehension strategies of the third-grade language arts program: relate ideas, organize information, synthesize ideas, evaluate ideas, and generate and apply ideas. The family project could relate to the science and math curricula by turning the students' survey results into graphs and charts, followed by an analysis of the compiled data. INFORMATION FOR THE TEACHER Although artists rarely want to be categorized, the label "abstract expressionism" aptly describes their work. The paintings are completely abstract, with no recognizable objects from the real world (another term for completely abstract is NON-OBJECTIVE), and the purpose of their art is to create expression and emotion.

Painting Without a Brush
When you were very young, you probably enjoyed finger painting. Maybe you still do! Finger painting allows you to feel the materials, and to really become a part of the work. Jackson Pollock was an American artist who created a style of painting called "action painting." While he didn't use his fingers to paint, Pollock used items other than brushes to create his work. Usually he laid the canvas on the floor, and moved quickly around and into the work , dripping paint from cans with holes in the bottom! Sometimes he would just throw the paint at the canvas. Pollock's style of painting is called Abstract Expressionism. Artists who paint this way are not interested in making pictures that look real. They care more about expressing their feelings and emotions, and to do this, they use the art elements of color, value, shape, line, and texture as ends in themselves. While Pollock was interested in the finished product or the art, he thought the process of making the painting was an important part of his work, too. By creating action paintings, the artist felt that he actually became a part of the painting. If you look closely at a Jackson Pollock painting, you'll see that he built layer after layer of paint to create his work.

Aesthetic Realism Foundation NEW YORK, NY 10012 Jackson Pollock’s Number One 1948 or How Can We Be Abandoned and Accurate at the Same Time? By Lore Elbel-Bruce
From the moment I first saw them, I felt Jackson Pollock’s action paintings had something I was yearning for—something deeply composing and satisfying to me. I learned from Aesthetic Realism, the philosophy founded by Eli Siegel in 1941 and taught in New York City, that these paintings have something every person is looking for. Eli Siegel, the person who understood beauty and the human self, stated: "All beauty is a making one of opposites, and the making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves." I learned from this mighty principle why I was so taken with the paintings of Jackson Pollock: they put together opposites I desperately wanted to put together in myself. In his landmark broadside, "Is Beauty the Making One of Opposites?" Mr. Siegel writes about "Freedom and Order": Does every instance of beauty in nature and beauty as the artist presents it have something unrestricted, unexpected, uncontrolled?—and does this beautiful thing in nature or beautiful thing coming from the artist’s mind have, too, something accurate, sensible, logically justifiable, which can be called order?
Number One 1948 Jackson Pollock’s Number One 1948 shows how much paint can be "unrestricted, unexpected, uncontrolled" as we see it poured onto a canvas making lines that are assertive, and we also see a complexity of shapes, globs, pools of paint layered one on top of another. Lines interweave, while remaining individually perceptible, distinct and free.

POLLOCK AND ME
It took me a long time for me to finally "get" modern art, and an even longer time to relate to it and grow fond of it, but somehow I never had that problem with Jackson Pollock. Jackson Pollock was the creator of those daring action drip paintings that are the glory of abstract expressionism which helped make New York the art capital of the world back in the fifties. Various black and white photos show him at work crouched cat-like with arms extended, paint can in one hand, drip stick in the other, methodically laying siege to a canvas rolled out beneath his paint-spattered shoes, ever-present butt dangling from his mouth.
As to why I could relate, perhaps it was the unrecognized madness in me making an unconscious connection to the obvious madness of the artist. The paintings are like a reverse Rorschach test, where nothing bears the faintest semblance to anything we can see, yet each drip, each splatter, individually or as a grouping or as a whole, seems to act as the perfect register to how we think and feel. Moreover, there is an extra-dimensional quality to a Jackson Pollock opus. With all other paintings, your viewing stops at the flat surface of the canvas. Not so with Pollock. You are seemingly drawn into some kind of parallel universe on the other side. Tom Wolfe said you could literally fly a spaceship through the things.

PS-B RATING - I didn't know too much about Jackson Pollock before seeing Ed Harris' impressive biopic. I knew he was an artist. I had heard of his wife, but I didn't know she was an artist as well. And I remember Patti Smith referring to him as a "nigger" in one of her songs. After seeing Pollock , I'm still not that familiar with the celebrated American artist, but I do know that Harris and screen wife Marcia Gay Harden act their asses off in the film and were justifiably honored with Academy Award nominations for their performances. Pollock is almost good enough to transcend the typical tale of a tortured artist, only occasionally slipping into clichéd scenes showing the artist sitting alone with his head buried in his hands or curled up in the fetal position. For those of you as uneducated about art as myself, Pollock (played by

Jackson Pollock
Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) was an American analog to Picasso in terms of 20th century fame. Abstract expressionism does not begin to describe how he splashed paint everywhere to great effect. Pollock's career was cut short, when he died in a car crash in 1956.

We recently had the opportunity to chat with veteran actor, Ed Harris. Harris is most widely-known for his roles in "The Rock," "The Abyss" and "The Right Stuff." His other films are "The Firm," "Glengary Glen Ross" and his most recent (and highly acclaimed work) "Pollock". Here is a paraphrased transcript of our conversation with Mr. Ed Harris...
DVD Authority: As with most interviews, we'll start at the beginning. How did you originally become involved in acting?
Ed Harris:
It was my first year in college down in Oklahoma, and I realized that I couldn't make living being a professional athlete. So I became interested in theater, and I did a few plays over the Summer. I went to Cal Arts after that and got some small parts. Essentially, that's how I became interested in acting.
DVD Authority: Pollock was your directorial debut, and it's a movie which you've tried to have made for some 15 years. How did you originally become interested in Jackson Pollock?
