He was the first sculptor since the heyday of Neoclassicism to occupy a central position in public attention and he opened up new possibilities for his art in a manner comparable to that of his great contemporaries in painting - Cézanne, Gauguin, and van Gogh. His beginnings, however, were not auspicious. He came from a poor background, was rejected by the Ecole des Beaux-Arts three times and for many years worked as an ornamental mason. In 1875 he went to Italy, where (as he later wrote to Bourdelle) 'Michelangelo freed me from academism.' Michelangelo was the inspiration for his first major work, The Age of Bronze, which was exhibited in 1878. (Like many of Rodin's statues, this exists in several casts; the Rodin Museum in Paris has examples of virtually all his work. There is also a Rodin museum in Philadelphia.) It caused a sensation because the naturalistic treatment of the naked figure was so different from the idealizing conventions then current that he was accused of having cast it from a live model. Apart from his monuments, he did a large number of portraits of eminent personalities and he was a prolific graphic artist, some of his later work especially being notably erotic. Although the literary and symbolic significance he attached to his work has been out of keeping with the conception of 'pure' sculpture that has predominated in the 20th century, Rodin's influence on the development of modern art has been immense, for single- handedly he rescued sculpture from a period of stagnation and made it once again a vehicle for intense personal expression.

Oft wird der Reiz des Unvollendeten und Torsohaften gesucht, und zuweilen sind die Figuren nur so weit aus dem Block hervorgearbeitet, daß das Wesentliche in Erscheinung tritt. Rodin war zwar dem Neubarock seiner Zeit verpflichtet, aber die stärksten künstlerischen Eindrücke empfing er von Michelangelo.

In 1863 he went to work for the architectural sculptor A. E. Carrier-Belleuse, who had a great influence on him. From 1870 to 1875 he continued in the same trade in Brussels and then briefly visited Italy. In the Salon of 1877 he exhibited a nude male figure, The Age of Bronze (1876; Paris). It was both extravagantly praised and condemned; his critics unjustly accused him of having made a cast from life. From the furor Rodin gained the active support and patronage of Turquet, undersecretary of fine arts. His Age of Bronze and St. John (1878) were purchased for the Luxembourg Gardens, Paris. MacLaren Rodin Site Presented by Auguste Rodin - Biography In 1877, when Rodin exhibited the piece known as The Age of Bronze in Brussels and subsequently in Paris, critics were amazed by its verisimilitude, some even accusing him of casting from a live model; yet due to the intervention of many friends and collegues, it was eventually purchased by the state and erected in the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris. In 1880 Rodin received the commission to produce an entrance portal for the new Museum of Decorative Arts (The Gates of Hell), and began a series of busts of famous writers and artists that brought him widespread acclaim. From his work on the portal evolved many of his best known works, including The Thinker and The Kiss . At this time he also produced the definitive model of The Burghers of Calais in 1889. Despite his attachment to Rose Beuret, Rodin enjoyed the company of women as friends, muses and lovers. In 1883 he was introduced to Camille Claudel, a young sculptress whose talent and striking looks impressed him deeply. The fierce emotion exposed in Claudel's sculpture may have influenced Rodin's own oeuvre. They remained close until about 1897, after which he continued to advocate her work strongly to critics and collectors, stating of her famously, "I showed her where to find gold, but the gold she found was her own." As a mark of his esteem for her art, Rodin stipulated in his will that a room in the future Musée Rodin be set aside for Claude's sculptures.

In the 4th century it adopted the Christian faith, and St Amans, its first bishop, was elected in 401. During the middle ages contests were rife between the bishops, who held the temporal power in the “cite,” and the counts in the “ bourg.” The Albigenses were defeated near Rodez in 1210. The countship of Rodez, detached from that of Rouergue at the end of the iith century, belonged first to the viscounts of Carlat, and from the beginning of the 14th century to the counts of Armagnac. From 1360 to 1368 the English held the town. After the confiscation of the estates of the Armagnacs in 1475 the countship passed to the dukes of Alençon and then to the D’Albrets. Henry IV. finally annexed it to the crown of France. His brother, George Washington Rodgers (1787—1832), a brother-in-law of Commodore Perry, served in the War of 1812 and in the wf~r with Algiers (1815). Rear-Admiral John Rodgers (1812—1882), a son of Commodore John Rodgers, served in the Union navy and in 1877—1882 was superintendent of the Naval Observatory at Washington. G. W. Rodgers had two sons who were naval officers, Christopher Raymond Perry Rodgers (1819—1892) and George Washington Rodgers (1822—1863). Sir George was appointed once more commander-in-chief of the Leeward Islands late in 1779. His orders were to relieve Gibraltar en his way to the West Indies.
