Oil on paper. 7" x 5" (UF) Upon arrival in the US, Teraoka observed that American values are in constant flux characterized by "big ideas," freedom, individuality and materialism, in contrast to Japanese cultural values, which he felt could be described as appreciation for ancient customs, familial responsibility and discretion. For Teraoka, the comparative experience of living in America and Japan informed his early series that was stylistically pop, full of whimsy and humor. Perhaps best described as observations on the profound cultural calamity of the two 'worlds,' Teraoka explores the meeting of the cultures in the series McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan . Works from this period are executed in Teraoka's then signature medium of watercolor on paper, painted in the style of traditional Japanese woodblock of the nineteenth century Edo period, appropriating the aesthetic, compositional and stylistic concerns of such artists as Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) and Katsushika Hokusai (1759-1849).

from the web site Masami Teraoka From afar the works of Masami Takaoka look like Japanese woodblock prints, but move in closer and the view is startling. Octopi wear condoms, geisha have AIDS, samurai ogle blond beach bunnies, kimonoed matrons bite into hamburgers. Many of the canvases are huge, floor-to-ceiling in height, painted in watercolors or, more recently, oils; only a few are actual woodblocks.
Born in 1936 in Onomichi, a small town between Hiroshima and Osaka on the Sea of Japan, Teraoka moved to Los Angeles in 1961 to study art. His parents, who ran a kimono fabric store, encouraged the move. "I feel really lucky about that," Teraoka says today. "I felt much closer to American culture philosophically speaking. I think Japan is fine, but the rigid structure and rituals were not my style."

Masami Teraoka, 1936- Pasadena City College Artist in Residence, 1998 Masami Teraoka, one of the most popular contemporary artists in the world, fuses the techniques used in the ancient Japanese watercolor ukiyoe prints with techniques found in the American pop art movement. Teraoka explores themes in American culture utilizing contemporary symbolism, ancient craft and techniques. Dealing with modern issues, Masami Teraoka is known for exploring the "culture clash" of Japan and America. As a prominent artist, his work has been exhibited in such prominent museums as The Museum of Modern Art (New York), The Los Angeles County Museum of Art , and The Whitney Museum of American Art (New York). In 1996, he was honored with an exhibition of his collective work at the Arthur Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C.. Evolution of an Artist Born in 1936, Masami Teraoka grew up in Onomichi, a small town wedged between Hiroshima and Osaka on the Sea of Japan. His mother and father ran a kimono fabric store, creating an artistic influence on Teraoka at a very early age. In Japan, he studied art and aesthetics at Kwansei Gakuin University in Kobe. At the age of 25, he emigrated to Los Angeles to study at the Otis Art Institute, where he received his B.A and M.F.A. It was there that Teraoka found his fascination with a synthesis of American pop art and traditional Japanese ukiyoe prints. By studying the ancient works of the master woodblock artists including Utagawa Kunisada and Katsushika Hokusai, Teraoka used traditional techniques to create a contemporary style punctuated with contemporary images such as Coke cans, computers and condoms. As he

Welcome!
Welcome to Masami Teraoka's Art Theatre . Masami's interest as a painter is a dialogue on contemporary social, political, environmental, sexual and cultural issues. His work (see Gallery ) expresses the human drama of contemporary life. New challenges to the eternal human condition continuously motivate his creativity. Ironically, to tackle contemporary issues, Masami reaches into the past, basing his early paintings on Japanese Ukiyo-e or woodblock prints. His newest work has taken another direction, melding Japanese print and painting traditions with western aesthetics, inspired by religious and aesthetic themes from the Renaissance which he updates as if continuing a cross-epoch conversation. Masami has painted about many issues from censorship and AIDS (continuing themes) to air and water pollution, toxic shock syndrome, American fast food and culture invading the world (McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan, 31 Flavors Invading Japan), international tourism and culture clash to current series on todays revolutionary mass media and internet culture (often as seen through the eyes of an up-to-date Adam and Eve). His works are marked by humor, an exquisite sensuality of line, form and color, astute commentary, topicality, and a high level of aesthetics.
