In 1986, the child of a friend contracted HIV from a tainted blood transfusion. This event shocked Teraoka and impelled him to turn his attention to the escalating terrors and tragedies of the AIDS epidemic. M A S A M I T E R A O K A " T h e A I D S S e r i e s " Masami Teraoka is a Japanese born Artist who lives in Hawaii. His artworks are stylistically inspired by the traditional woodblock prints of old Japan, but the content of his work is thoroughly contemporary. With searing Pop Art sensibility, Masami-san explores the crisis ridden modern world. Cultural identity, AIDS, technology, random violence, mass consumerism, and war... all are targets for the brush of this powerful modern Artist. The works presented here are from Masami-san's " AIDS Series " and the captions to the works when bracketed by quotation marks are the Artist's own words. Put It In Writing by Tucker Nichols
Provided by NextMonet.com Namiyo at Hanauma Bay by Masami Teraoka
Teraoka's use of Japanese text in this lithograph furthers his goal. The enclosed inscription, or cartouche, in the upper left of the image (which translates to "Derivation of the wave series: snorkeling scene at Hanauma Bay in Hawaii") mimics the kind of documentation often found in traditional Japanese prints. The smaller red cartouches below are his signature, while the even smaller round text beside them is a censor's seal. Traditionally, such a seal would be used to reflect the government's approval of the content of the work; Teraoka uses his own version to declare his artistic freedom. Like the art of so many cultures, Japan's tradition is built on references to past styles of particular artists. By drawing on established conventions of the use of writing in art, Teraoka simultaneously looks to the past and to the future. Putting contemporary words into traditional formats gives him a way to highlight the difference between the two.
