Masami Teraoka the Extraordianary Contemporary Artist by Nan Kaaumoana The ACLU of Hawai'i is honored to present a work of art by Masami Teraoka. Teraoka's work is known and respected, not just in his adopted home of Hawai'i, but throughout the world where he is recognized as an outstanding contemporary artist. He and partner Lynda Hess have recently donated a poster, designed exclusively for the affiliate, depicting Teraoka's 1982 water color painting "McDonalds's Hamburgers Invading Japan-Chochin-me". Proceeds from the posters will support ACLU's legal and education programs. Masami Teraoka was born in Onomichi, a small town between Hiroshima and Osaka on the Inland Sea in 1936. Art was always a focal point of his life and his first influences were the subtle colors and patterns seen in his family's kimono shop fabrics and his grandmother's collection of woodblock prints. He studied aesthetics at Kwansei Gakuin University in Kobe and, encouraged by his family, came to the United States in 1961 to attend the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles from which he graduated with a BFA and an MFA in 1968.

Masami Teraoka Review: Dara Cuisine
by Ruth Yfonne Chen
The ecstatic beauty and intense vulnerability of nude women, historically celebrated in art, has been wrenched a sunder by dark-minded men and impersonal technology in Cloning Eve: Viagra Falls, the central work in the exhibit. Viagra Falls In his mixed-media construction pieces, including Women in the Chameleon Chamber , P riest and Pregnant Barbie , and Barbie Dream Altar , Teraoka portrays priests as chameleons in their confessional boxes and altars, and women as naked Barbie dolls or sex hardened women dressed in skimpy black leather bras and thongs, stripped of their human conscience. Virtual Inquisition/Ascending Chaos, is a variation along the same theme, where naked or black leather strapped bodies of women in various stages of exposure and undress lie about, waiting for organ transplants as pythons wrap themselves around the bodies of dying women, while naked priests, politicians and other women, look on surveying the chaos. Cyberspace Terminus depicts computer monitors and keyboards lying about as coffins with masses of human corpses piled on the ground

The Geisha Has a Message
Photos by John J. Kim Edo Update: Japanese American artist Masami Teraoka poses before one of his paintings, "Tale of a Thousand Condoms/Mates," currently on view in a major exhibit of his work at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Masami Teraoka's mix of classic Japanese style and contemporary themes BY JAMES CARROLL AND HUA HSU Masami Teraoka is talked out. After spending a good part of the day with reporters and other media types, he now welcomes several hundred opening-night reception-goers to an extensive exhibit of his work at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. "I am happy you have come to see my paintings," Teraoka says to the white-wine-sipping crowd that gathered in the museum's rotunda on Oct. 20. But anticipating more of the questions he has been fielding all day, he graciously suggests: "Perhaps we could just socialize a bit this evening." Such as it is with Teraoka's work. In this show, his 31 canvases beg commentary, especially for first-time viewers. In Teraoka's paintings, many of them nearly monumental at more than 8-feet tall, Kimono-clad women tear open condom packages with their teeth, pop icons are depicted in classic Japanese style, and samurais leer at snorkeling bathing beauties. The titles of Teraoka's works often say it all. "McDonalds Hamburgers Invading Japan" and "31 Flavors Invading Japan," for example, are nearly literal in their dramatization of fast food and consumerism in Japanese society. Other paintings focus on an array of social issues, including AIDS, censorship, pollution, and technology.

Artist Masami Teraoka to present slide lecture, "Monitoring Our Times"
Teraoka's work is strongly influenced by ukiyo-e, woodblock prints that were the "genre painting" of Edo-period Japan (1615 to 1868). His point of view, however, is very fresh. Teraoka uses traditional techniques to address contemporary issues, often juxtaposing the cultures of Japan and America. Born in Onomichi, Japan, Teraoka moved to Los Angeles in 1961 to attend Otis Art Institute. He began creating his own watercolor variations of ukiyo-e with contemporary themes, such as the "McDonalds Hamburger Invading Japan" series and "The 31 flavors Invading Japan" series. Teraoka's recent work draws from new sources found in early Renaissance and Northern European Christian paintings. Building upon his earlier work, Teraoka explores issues of sexuality, gender and culture, directing his scrutinizing gaze at religion, politics, the media and the role of technology. "Web of Confession," Teraoka's current exhibition at the University of Oregon's Museum of Art, deals with America's tabloid confessional culture. The exhibition continues through May 9. "Think of my paintings as individual scenes from a drama, play or movie. If my paintings were movies, they might be rated everywhere from G or PG to R to X," Teraoka said. "Like going to a play, you'll have to decide for yourself if you want to see what is showing."

THE FLOATING WORLD: MASAMI TERAOKA AND HIS ART This program premieres exclusively on KQED on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at 11:00pm and will be broadcast nationally this summer.
Louise Lo's THE FLOATING WORLD: MASAMI TERAOKA AND HIS ART is a revealing look at an artist and his creative process. Masami Teraoka, an internationally-renowned artist from Japan, is known for adapting art forms of the East and West to comment on contemporary, often controversial issues. Through interviews with Teraoka, his family and experts in Japanese art and culture, filmmaker Lo assembles a fascinating and complex portrait of the artist. This May, NAATA will present this program, as part of 8 new programs, to audiences nation-wide commemorating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
As a young boy in Japan, Teraoka's first encounter with American culture was during the U.S. occupation of Japan. Impressed with Teraoka's drawing skills, American soldiers nicknamed him "Sketchboy" and would often pay him to sketch portraits of girlfriends to send home. Teraoka later became frustrated by the rigid social structure, obligations and rituals inherent in Japanese culture and left Japan for California, in the late 1960s. While he embraced the freedoms found in America's culture of individualism, he maintained an acute critical viewpoint of both Japan and the United States that is clearly reflected in his art. His unique blend of Western and Eastern motifs and his sharp, often funny, critique of world attitudes towards consumerism, sexuality and AIDS distinguish him as an artist with a highly original vision who consistently challenges his audiences.

For Immediate Release:
Masami Teraoka "Tower of Babel" at Jay Grimm Gallery, Chelsea Jay Grimm Gallery at 505 West 28th Street, New York, will hold an exhibition of paintings by the internationally known artist Masami Teraoka from November 2nd through December 9th, 2000. There will be a reception at the gallery on Thursday, November 2nd, from 7-9 P.M., and the artist will be present. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with Pamela Auchincloss, 601 West 26th Street, 12th Floor, where a concurrent exhibition by the artist is on view through November 22nd. Born in Onomichi, Japan, Masami Teraoka moved to Los Angeles in 1961 to attend the Otis Art Institute. This move informed the culture shock of Teraoka's work in the late 1970s and 1980s, wherein geisha sometimes chase french fries under McDonald's golden arches or open condoms, painted in the style of Edo-period ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The importance of Teraoka's keen and pointed commentary about the cultural shifts and blatant denials that are shaping global society were quickly and widely recognized. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art mounted a solo show of his work in 1977, followed soon by shows at the Whitney Museum, Newport Harbor Art Museum and the Grey Art Gallery. Teraoka has exhibited internationally ever since and has been the subject of several monographs and essays.
