Star-Bulletin EVEN if the Los Angeles dry cleaner hadn't destroyed the heirloom black silk kimono his father gave him, and even if he hadn't misplaced the backup kimono, artist Masami Teraoka is saying goodbye to his usual choice of art opening attire. For the reception of "East is West in Hawaii" at the Academy of Arts last night, Teraoka chose Western garb, a reflection of his current state of mind. "I don't think I'm feeling very much Japanese any more," said the 65-year-old artist, who was born to a family of kimono store owners in Onomichi, a small town on the Inland Sea. Nevertheless, the academy is paying Teraoka homage with a special exhibit featuring the Japanese woodblock-like paintings that made him famous. The exhibit is part of the "East is West in Hawaii" show, which also features the work of 21 other Hawaii artists.

It was only a matter of time before Bill and Monica and her infamous blue dress became fodder for the canvas, and the time is now at The Contemporary Museum's fifth Biennial Exhibition. Clinton is without his pants and Lewinsky is naked except for her beret and the strategically draped blue dress. In Masami Teraoka's huge oil on canvas, "the Tower of Babel," the indiscreet couple takes many different forms - mostly without clothes - with a full cast of Catholic officials and familiar congressional members. In one corner, Bill and Monica look nothing like themselves. They are merely two naked bodies entwined in microphones and electrical cords. In another corner, elected officials are lined up to slide down a huge cigar into eternal hell.

Waves and Plagues
Japanese-born painter Masami Teraoka uses traditional imaginary to examine such contemporary themes as AIDS, sexuality, and cultural identity. Teraoka employs the imagery and conventions of the 19th-century woodblock print in many of his large water-colour paintings, which incorporate social satire and witty eroticism. This exhibition features 33 of his recent paintings and four prints and is organized by James Ulak, an associate curator of Japanese art for the Sackler and the neighbouring Freer Gallery of Art. Also on view are 16 examples from Teraoka's personal collection of 19th century Japanese prints and drawings, most of them by Kunisada Utagawa (1786-1865), whose work Teraoka (1936) cites as the influence for much of his art. This exhibition is the first presentation of his work specifically planned to explore its visual sources and to seek an understanding of his paintings in the context of Japanese sensibility and tradition.
Teraoka first received international acclaim with his solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of Art in New York in 1979, and he has exhibited widely since. His distinctive style employs the graphic power and palette of traditional Japanese prints to explore aspects of life in the 20th century. Teraoka's personal iconography, drawn from Japanese and Western sources, includes catfish, ghosts, samurai, and geisha, as well as Adam and Eve, punk rockers, television, and London buses. Many of his images - like the traditional ones from which he draws inspiration are embellished by messages in Japanese, often reinforcing the paintings' ironic humour.

select a topic local focus The Floating World: Masami Teraoka and His Art profiles one of the country's most renowned Asian American artists who adapts the art forms of East and West to comment on contemporary issues. Teraoka's work ranges from bemused to biting as it deals with wide-ranging themes, including cultural conflict, environmental pollution, sexuality and AIDS. He has been inspired by ancient Japanese traditions, especially the art of woodblock prints known as ukiyo-e , meaning "pictures of the floating world." In startling contrast, Teraoka's recent work has taken a darker cast as he draws on medieval Renaissance motifs to tackle issues of sexual repression and oppression, and the impact of computer technology. The documentary offers an intimate, revealing look at the artist and his creative process through interviews with Teraoka and experts in Japanese art and culture that place his work in artistic, social and historical perspective, including writer Donald Richie and artist/tatooist Don Ed Hardy. The film follows Teraoka to Japan to examine his roots as an artist and discover why he chose to leave his native land. Teraoka visits California sites that inspired his early work; plays jazz on the piano an early American obssession; shows masterworks from his ukiyo-e collection; paints at all hours in his studio on Oahu; joins snorkelers at Hanauma Bay a favorite subject; and charms his public at a San Francisco exhibition.

Filmmaker Louise Lo has produced and directed a number of documentaries, many of which have aired on KQED. Like The Floating World , several of her productions have examined the lives of artists, including A Piece of Cake about Pop artist Wayne Thiebaud, Frida Kahlo: Portrait of an Artist about the Mexican painter and wife of Diego Rivera, and Julia Morgan: A Life by Design about the architect who designed Hearst Castle. She has also produced programs on Asian American subjects, such as Dust and Threads about Asian immigrant women, and served as Project Director on Silk Screen , a PBS series about Asian Americans. The Influence of Traditional Japanese Arts
Masami Teraoka was born in Japan in 1936, received his early arts training there, and studied aesthetics at university in Kobe. Teraoka has a deep affinity for the traditional art of ukiyo-e as well as other Japanese traditions, such as kabuki , calligraphy, tattooing, and folklore. His art combines these Japanese influences with Western forms, resulting in works of fresh originality. While inspired by the traditions of the past, Teraoka speaks compellingly to the modern world. "Web of Confession: Paintings by Masami Teraoka" will continue through May 9. The exhibit, organized by Pamela Auchincloss Project Space and Arts Management Services in New York, includes 21 paintings, primarily watercolor on paper, that survey the artist’s work from 1992 to the present. No longer reliant on the format of Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints as the stepping stone for his commentaries on the culture clashes of East and West, Teraoka produced images that had a sharper edge to them. The subjects of his works combine contemporary violence (the Gulf War and Bosnia), loathing of AIDS, and the alienation of a computer-oriented society. "The social and cultural dramas of today’s society motivate me to create paintings," Masami writes. "My earlier work focused on my life experiences in America and Japan. More recently I have been inspired to create paintings based on worldwide issues such as religion, sexuality, nudity, erotica, media, privacy, confession, politics, gender, AIDS, race, violence, war and environmental issues, among other things. My paintings are sometimes humorous or lighthearted and other times very intense. The saving grace is aesthetic concern–beauty transcends the issues."

Beyond Boundaries
Cultural legacy, be it Japanese (Masami Teraoka), Turkish (Peter Hristoff), or Cherokee (Kay Walkingstick), often provides a context from which artists begin to examine artistic or social issues they deem important. Beyond Boundaries explores how an individual message and voice is shaped by the artist's background. It investigates the give and take between native heritage and the American culture in which the artist participates - and how this plays out in his or her art.
In Masami Teraoka's paintings, "the people and props that [he] uses are symbols of both the contemporary life [he] experiences and of the venerable Japanese traditions [he] admires." In particular, Teraoka uses Kabuki and Ukiyo-e woodblock print motifs interjected with American Pop Art flavor to frame "plays" that explore social issues the artist such as the clash of Japanese and American culture, AIDS, violence, sexuality, and the victimization of women. While addressing serious subject matter, Teraoka often approaches topics with humor or ornate beauty, captivating the viewers' attention.

14 7/8" x 11" Kay Walkingstick's paintings are imbued with her interest in native spirituality and how that is made manifest in images of Nature. Land, and our relationship to it, is a key topic for her. This innate sensibility underscores Walkingstick's well crafted explorations of the universality of landscape, natural phenomena and archetypal symbols elements that reverberate within individual's psyche and across cultures. Each painting is a diptych pairing "an abstracted [realistic] landscape with a symbolically abstracted landscape. These seeming dichotomies acknowledge the inward spiritual and outward temporal balance of nature and by implication of our own lives." They are maps to our place in a shared humanity.
