Louis C. Tiffany ~ 1848-1933 Louis Comfort Tiffany , the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, began his career as a painter in the 1860s and 1870s. After studying under the American landscape painter George Inness, Tiffany combined the use of light, color and nature in his work. He received praise for his oils and watercolors, which included scenes from his travels in Europe and North Africa. By 1880, Tiffany had established himself as a artist and became the youngest member of the National Academy of Design. Tiffany’s travels not only influenced his career but also acquainted him with the designs of medieval and Roman glass. Glass would offer a new field of challenge for Tiffany and would lead him to his next endeavor in design and decorative arts as an interior designer. His commissions for Mark Twain, Cornelius Vanderbilt and the White House under President Arthur earned him an international reputation and great success. Stained-glass windows were a feature in these interiors. Tiffany became an enthusiastic supporter of the European Art Nouveau movement, challenging the current Victorian ornate style. Art Nouveau used free-flowing designs based on nature that exemplified the characteristics prevalent in Tiffany’s earlier creations as a landscape painter. The use of light, color and nature assumed greater significance in Tiffany’s work as he developed his unique approach to Art Nouveau.

Perhaps most fortuitously, though, he possessed a sense of adventure and innovation that led him to experiment with new and unique ways of attaining his dreams. This spirit of innovation brought about new glass production techniques and his development of the copper-foil method of stained glass construction, commonly referred to as the Tiffany method. The Birth of the Tiffany Method "True art is ever progressive and impatient of fixed rules.
Because a thing has always been done in a certain way
is no reason why it should never be done in any other."
Louis Comfort Tiffany was drawn to great beauty. He loved fine paintings and also the magnificent stained glass windows of European cathedrals, such as the 14th-century Gothic cathedral at Chartres in Paris shown below. His goal was to make the beauty of stained glass available to the American homeowner. View Tiffany Lamps Also

"In 1879, he seized up the suggestion of Candace Wheeler that he join with Samuel Colman and Lockwood de Forest to form a firm that would apply aesthetic idealism to the practice of interior design. Impelled by Tiffany's leadership and nascent talent, as well as by his father's money and connections, 'Louis Comfort Tiffany and Associated American Artists' thrived until 1885.....A desire to pursue independent endeavors lead to the breakup of the firm in 1885, when Tiffany chose to concentrate on art in glass, establishing his new business later that year." "Tiffany actually had begun his glass experiments about 1875 to 1878, when he was working first at glasshouses in Brooklyn, where his later rival, John La Farge was also working, both being particularly interested in opalescent glass. Tiffany's early patents date from 1880-81. He incorporated the first Tiffany Glass Company on December 1, 1885, which later [1900] became known as Tiffany Studios, and remained in business until 1928 [after 1919 sometimes using the factory's name and mark of Tiffany Furnaces - ed.]. Tiffany trademarked the name Favrile, derived from the old french word for handmade, to generically describe his production." "Louis Comfort Tiffany actually located [c. 1893] his Tiffany Studios factory, called the Tiffany Glass Furnaces, in Corona, Queens.....Here Tiffany functioned as the ultimate authority over more than three hundred workers, designers and artists, glass blowers and gaffers, and artisans of numerous other tasks."

31. März bis 13. Juni 1999

L ouis C T iffany - Masterpieces of American Art Nouveau
March 31 - June 13, 1999
N o other artist is as closely associated with American Art Nouveau as is Louis C. Tiffany. Along with Emil Gallé and the Daum Brothers, he was one of the creators of modern art glass. Examples of Tiffany's works can be seen in the collections of the greatest museums in Europe, Japan and the United States. His stained glass windows and lamps are especially prized on the international art market, where they have received increasing popularity. 1998 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Louis C. Tiffany. Following an installation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg is mounting a special exhibition devoted to the artist. The Hamburg exhibition offers a representative cross-section of his works with numerous loans from international collections. Tiffany's glassware, stained glass windows and lamps will be shown, as well as paintings, design drawings, enamel vessels, ceramics, jewelry and silver. Seen together, these examples provide an almost comprehensive survey of the range of Tiffany's artistic and creative genius.
Tiffany began his career as a painter but soon shifted his focus to interior design. He developed a special interest in coloured and stained glass and sought to improve the technology in this medium. His first endeavor in this direction was the founding of the Tiffany Glass Company in 1885. In 1892, with the establishment of the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company, he finally had his own manufactory and soon his glassware won great renown in Europe. At the world expositions in Paris in 1889 and 1900, in Chicago in 1893, and in St. Louis in 1904, Tiffany was regarded as a success in both artistic and commercial terms. By 1903 more than 40 museums had acquired his works for their permanent collections.

Louis Comfort Tiffany Despite inheriting $35 million, Louis Comfort Tiffany was determined to make his own name in the art community. In 1879, he began his lifelong experimentation with art glass techniques. His initial efforts were frustrating; an explosion and two fires. However, his perseverance soon made him the most fashionable decorator in the USA, with commissions for such notables as Mark Twain and Cornelius Vanderbilt. New! The Cross of Jewels

The Cross of Jewels is one of fifteen Tiffany windows featured in Blandford Church in Petersburg, Virginia. This is the only window in the church with an ornamental design. Its title may have a religious connotation, but the term "jewel" is also a technical term for certain types of projecting ornamental glass formations that yield a sparking, jewel-like effect. The Cross of Jewels was a gift to the church from Louis Comfort Tiffany. Blandford Church is one of six churches in the United States in which every window is designed and made by Tiffany Studios.
