The Chicago Bears have retired the most uniform numbers (13) in the NFL; followed by the New York Giants (11); the Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco (8); the Baltimore-Indianapolis Colts (7); Detroit, Boston-New England Patriots and Philadelphia (6); Cleveland (5). No player has ever had his number retired by more than one NFL team. The NFL has recently discouraged (though not eliminated) the practice of retiring numbers. As a result, the Green Bay Packers retired the jersey (but not the #92) of defensive end Reggie White in 1999. Nonetheless, Packers GM Ron Wolf announced that there are no plans to reissue the number. Numbers retired in 2002 Larry Csonka (1968-74, 1979 with Dolphins).

Larry Csonka and power running became synonymous in the NFL of the 1970's. As a player with the powerhouse Miami Dolphins he charged so tenaciously through defenses that his name became a household word and his nickname, Zonk, became a new American verb. From 1971-1973, he led the Dolphins to three Super Bowl appearances, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors along the way. He and halfback Jim Kiick were affectionately known as "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," and were key players in the Dolphins' perfect 17-0-0 season in 1972. Csonka earned the MVP award of the Dolphins' Super Bowl VIII victory over the Minnesota Vikings by rushing 33 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns. In 1973, he was voted Super Athlete of the Year by the Professional Football Writers Association. In 1987, he was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in only his second year of eligibility. Larry continues to work in the "public eye" as host and producer of "Stihl's North to Alaska" and "NAPA's Csonka Outdoors," which air on the Outdoor Life Network. These programs showcase Larry's experience as a fisherman and hunter and his enthusiasm for outdoor sports and conservation. Larry also stays busy traveling the country visiting various clubs and corporations as a sports humor/motivational speaker. Larry Csonka has a tremendous story to tell and backs it up with a warm sincere approach that will have listeners on the edge of their seats. Larry will speak about the game, the players, coaching and starring moments of a great career. His audiences delight in his humor and leave feeling that they have always known him.

Larry Csonka Larry Csonka was the quintessential fullback of the outstanding Miami Dolphin teams of the 1970's and of the National Football League as a whole. He was the forward mover - the man who got the ball when a first down or a touchdown was a few yards away. Csonka led the Dolphins to three consecutive Super Bowl appearances in 1971-1973, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors along the way. He and halfback, Jim Kiick, were affectionately known as "Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid", and were mainstays in the Dolphins' perfect 17-0-0 season in 1972. After leaving to join the World Football League, "Zonk" returned to the NFL to play for the New York Giants and the Dolphins again for his final pro season in 1979.
Csonka and power running became synonymous in the N.F.L. His status as MVP in Super Bowl VIII culminated in three trips with Miami to the N.F.L.'s biggest game. All-Pro with Miami, he roared through defensive lines from 1968-1974 and again in 1979 for the Dolphins. His career rushing record for the N.F.L. team of 6,736 yards still stands. He joined the N.F.L. New York Giants for three seasons from 1976 - 1978 and his career rushing total of over 8,000 yards places him among the Top 10 in all time rushing. His importance to the game of football was exemplified when he was elected to the N.F.L. Hall of Fame in 1987. His inclusion in this prestigious group came in only his second year of eligibility. In 1973, he was voted Athlete of the Year by the Professional Football Writers Association.

Any debate of the greatest NFL team of all times has to begin with the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Whether or not they are the greatest team of all time is debatable, but this accomplishment stands out as the greatest ever. Seventeen wins, no losses, and a Super Bowl championship put the Dolphins on a plane that has yet to be reached by any other NFL team. Following the 1971 season, the Dolphins made their first appearance in a Super Bowl, Super Bowl VI. It was the franchises sixth year of existence and they had finished the regular season with a 10-3-1 record. This was also coach Don Shula’s second year with the team. The Dolphins were humbled in a 24-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl, but they came back in 1972 with a vengeance. The Dolphins were led by the legendary coach Don Shula (347-173-6, .665). With Bob Griese at quarterback and Larry Csonka at fullback, the Dolphins opened the season with high expectations. The rest of the team was a cast of virtual unknowns who played the season of a lifetime. Although they won all of their games that season, the road was bumpy and the games were often not decided until the fourth quarter. To accomplish this incredible feat, Shula relied heavily on a smash-mouth running game featuring the amazing trio of Csonka, Jim Kiick (RB), and Mercury Morris (RB) and the aptly labeled “No-Name” defense to achieve what no NFL team had ever done, or has done since. To achieve an unbeaten, untied season resulting in a world championship.

(CBS) Marcus Allen was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, a day before the team he left during a bitter feud returns to the Super Bowl.
The former Oakland Raiders running back was chosen for the Class of 2003 in his first year of eligibility. He will be joined by Elvin Bethea, Joe DeLamielleure, James Lofton and Hank Stram, who went in as a seniors candidate.
Allen was the first player in NFL history to rush for more than 10,000 yards and catch passes for 5,000 more. He finished his career with 12,243 yards rushing and 5,411 receiving. He scored 145 touchdowns and was regarded as one of the game's best goal-line and short yardage runners.
Most of that production came with the Raiders. He led Oakland to the 1984 Super Bowl title, the team's last, and was voted the game's MVP for his 191 yards and two touchdowns.
