Editor The "jock" at his finest WASHINGTON - Dexter Manley never viewed himself as weak. As a strong professional football player on a championship team, why would he. After an announcment to the world that he was illiterate, he soon understood that he was not as strong as he thought. Unlike the popular show, The Weakest Link , the definition of the strongest link, has always been viewed as the "jock" - tall, handsome and full of athletic prowess. The "jock" has been known to excel at basketball and football and could run track if he so chose. He attracts strikingly beautiful women. In class, he's the cat's meow: the teachers adore him and will do anything just to see him pass. Philadelphia 76er Allen Iverson, is successful despite leaving college early.

Life couldn't seem better for Dexter Manley. The money flowed like a flooding river. His popularity skyrocketed. He was a major player in two Super Bowl wins. But when his football career was stripped away, his life took a tragic free-fall. He was a star defensive end for the Washington Redskins. Once worth 1.3 million dollars. But today Dexter Manley is wearing a different uniform. It's orange with the words "County Jail" emblazoned across the back. After years of drug abuse, the N.F.L. banned him from the league. He's since lost his wife, children, and now his freedom. For the last six disoriented months, he's been addicted to cocaine. And has been in and out of countless treatment centers. Recently he was homeless on the streets of Houston. Manley said, "Once football was over, I had nothing to live for." With his career in shambles, there's nothing left in the man but a gnawing emptiness. Have you had something precious taken away from your life? When you lose someone or something that's dear to you, doesn't it feel like a death? But can we find purpose and joy no matter

January 26, 1992
The Bills bickered. The Redskins relaxed. The Bills bragged. The Redskins rested. The Bills bombed. The Redskins roared. Buffalo came into Super Bowl XXVI full of itself and confident of its ability to defeat favored Washington. Talk about false hopes. Washington came into Super Bowl XXVI quietly cocky, bolstered by a season-long domination of the National Football League. The Redskins let the Bills talk all they wanted. Then they simply outplayed, overpowered and outcoached the American Football Conference champions, 37-24, in the Minneapolis Metrodome, turning what promised to be a competitive game into still another National Football Conference-dominated celebration. "A team reflects the personality of its coach," said Redskins linebacker Matt Millen, referring to the low-key attitude of his teammates. "You don't hear anything from us. That's because this is about as exciting as it can get for us." Not that Washington Coach Joe Gibbs is dull. He just doesn't believe in a lot of pre-game gab. He has spent years with the Redskins acquiring players who are intelligent, hard-working and talented but not very individualistic. Indeed, short of linebacker Wilber Marshall and receiver Gary Clark, both of whom occasionally speak before they think, this well could be the most humble team in the league.

    San Jose Sabre Cats

The offense was amazing. The defense was pretty stingy. They went 7-1 in their division. They won close ones and they won blowouts. They ran a lower-risk, higher-reward attack that was the envy of most every other AFL team. And when they squatted over the playoff toilet in 2001, the San Jose SaberCats couldn't make it happen. They tried everything: bran cereal, pleasant thoughts, a little light reading. But eventually, they got off the pot, unfulfilled... Read Full Preview

The NFL's Dirty Little Secret A majority of early NFL owners were known gamblers. Some were even tied to organized crime. One time Dallas Cowboy owner Clint Murchison Jr., Kansas City Chief owner Lamar Hunt (son of oilman H.L. Hunt Jr.), Cleveland Brown/Baltimore Raven owner Art Modell, New Orleans Saints owner John Mecom Jr. (who had very close ties to Mafia boss Carlos Marcello, a key player in bringing a team in New Orleans), Chicago/St. Louis/Arizona Cardinal owner Charles Bidwell (who was a bootlegger and an associate of Al Capone), and Philadelphia Eagle owner DeBenneville "Bert" Bell (who had ties to the East Coast Mafia) all were known to have been gamblers and bet on football (some even their own teams). Carroll Rosenbloom, one time owner of the Baltimore Colts, not only bet on his team, but also altered the outcome of a game because of it. Oddly enough, it was this very game that legitimized football for the television networks. It has been called the greatest game ever played: the 1958 NFL championship game. Rosenbloom’s Colts were playing the New York Giants, who were 3 ½ to 5 ½ point underdogs. Rosenbloom laid down $1 million on his boys to win.

  • In 1983 and 1984, they appeared in 2 straight Hall of Fame Bowls under coach Jerry Claiborne. Babe Parilli led them to the a Sugar Bowl appearance in the 1950 season and an appearance in the Cotton Bowl the next season, although head coach Bear Bryant may have played a role in their success as well. They employed a former Crimson Tide coach in the 90’s, but Bill Curry was fired after making only one bowl appearance. FTP, name this SEC school, now known for Hal Mu mme and Tim Couch. It last occurred in the NFL in 1941, being done by Lions star Dutch Clark. Jim McMahon practiced it, but never got to try it in a game. Charley Brickley and Jim Thorpe were known for their prowess in doing this. FTP, name this skill, which can earn yo u 4 points if done correctly in Arena Football. He was originally signed straight out of the Marines by the L.A. Rams in 1953 and then picked up off of the waiver wire by the Colts, where he was noted for being Art Donavan’s counterpart and for breaking Gino Marchetti’s leg during the 1958 NFL Cham pionship Game. However, he had developed into an All-Pro defensive tackle during that time and had a great season with the Steelers in 1962. But it is in his death that we know about him. FTP, name this aptly-nicknamed defensive tackle whose death from an apparent drug overdose in 1963 is still shrouded in mystery. Two answers required. The moment that forever linked them occurred on August 12, 1978. With 1:26 remaining in the second quarter, Steve Grogan called "94 Slant". However, he threw a high pass to his intended receiver, who was in the zone covered by th e free safety who was determined to stop the Patriots’ slant passes. FTP, name the free safety, an Ohio State product known as the "Assassin" and the New England receiver he permanently paralyzed on that night.
