A trip to Hog Heaven
By Bill Simmons
Page 2 columnist WASHINGTON (Wednesday, 5 p.m. ET) I feel like Colonel Jessup right now. You want stories? You want stories You can't handle these stories!!!! From left, George Starke, Don Warren, Joe Jacoby, Rick Walker and Mark May reunite in the trenches at RFK Stadium. I just spent four consecutive hours with the Hogs the heart and soul of the Redskins' Super Bowl teams in '83, '88 and '91 nodding, prodding, giggling, winding them up, watching them go. Head Hog George Starke was there. And future Hall of Famer Joe Jacoby. And former Pro Bowler Mark May. And tight ends Don Warren and Doc Walker. Original Hogs Russ Grimm and Jeff Bostic couldn't make it, but we didn't need 'em. The stories kept coming. And coming. And coming. We started off at the venerable RFK, arguably the Boston Garden of football stadiums. Lambeau Field might get the press heck, it's the closest thing to a sports cathedral we have right now but RFK and Chicago's Soldier Field always reeked of football more than any other place. The seats practically hug the field. The sections look like they might collapse onto one another. There's enough concrete and metal going around to start your own construction company. Even now, even after they tried to jazz it up for soccer, it still seems like this place hasn't seen a paint job or tweaking since 1342 AD. Once everyone arrived, we headed right out onto the field, ignoring the chilly breeze and light drizzle. As May said, "This is perfect. This is our weather." You could practically smell the nostalgia. And then the stories started coming, one after the other.

What We Have Here Is a Failure to Communicate
Matthew Yglesias raises a philosopher's objection to the assignment of numerical scores to "intelligence" via intelligence testing. It's a good objectionproof that the kind of stuff taught in Emerson Hall is not completely without applicability: Matthew Yglesias : I don't even know what it would mean for one test or another to "really" be measuring intelligence. It's not that tests aren't measuring anything or that they're socially constructed or anything it's just that the idea of intelligence doesn't have that kind of determinate meaning. Consider the analogy (put forward by Kevin Drum) to strength. Suppose we had two people. Person A can lift more weight one time than Person B, but given a modest quantity of weight Person B can lift it more times than can Person A. Which one is stronger? This is pretty clearly a pseudo-question ? the concept of strength is just ambiguous on this score ? if you really want to you can settle the issue by fiat, but why bother? To paraphrase, Matthew is saying that "intelligence" does not mean "the first principal component of a bunch of scores on tests some psychologist thinks have to do with cognitive ability." Of course, you can (for purposes of your own internal and private language)

Manley freed on parole from Texas prison HUNTSVILLE (AP) - Dexter Manley walked out of prison Monday and hopped into a black Mercedes, freed on parole after serving nearly 15 months of a four-year term for cocaine possession. " I'm OK,'' the former Washington Redskins star said after heading down a stairway outside the Walls Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and hugging his girlfriend. "It's been a soul searching. The only thing I can say is don't judge me by what I say, judge me by my actions.'' Manley won parole for good behavior. He had pleaded guilty to two counts of cocaine possession after repeated suspensions from football and arrests for illegal drug use. His last arrest, in 1995 in his native Houston, got him tossed behind bars. Manley emerged from the prison with 105 other freed inmates and was dressed in a light-blue, short-sleeve shirt and gray pants. He had expressed fears earlier about what the prison system, which issues clothing to released inmates, might give him. His attorney, Paula Asher, along with his girlfriend, brought him a change of clothes, including a garment in a Neiman Marcus bag, and he quickly slipped into a nearby building. He came out a few minutes later wearing a white shirt, red sleeveless sweater and jeans. Then they all got into a Mercedes and headed for Houston, about 90 miles to the south.

Sports Curmudgeon 3/21/02
A four year old pacing mare named Hostile Raider had been claimed a couple of times in the past few months and was just not racing well. One Friday evening, she was particularly bad finishing ninth in a field of nine in a position known in racing circles as "up the track". In fact, she was so far back; she almost won the next race. The next day, she gave birth to a foal. I guess you could say she was "laboring in the stretch". In any event, the trainer did not know she was in her "delicate condition"; her previous trainers did not know; a vet who had examined her did not know. Now they are wondering who the father is and what to name the foal.
Memo to Trainer: It is 10 o'clock. Do you know where your mare is? Names for foal:
      Racing Baggage
      Who's Your Daddy?
      Backseat Dividend
On the first day of spring football practice, University of Florida officials removed a fan from the practice because new football coach, Ron Zook, has a new policy: No one is allowed to sit during practice including players, staff and fans. One fan refused to stand and watch the practice and was therefore escorted out. I can't wait for someone in a wheelchair to show up to watch a practice to see if the university officials are dumb enough to think that Coach Zook's policy would indeed allow them to exclude this person from watching practice on the basis that he is not standing up. Come to think of it, what is Casey Martin doing these days? A longtime regular reader of these rants provided information regarding the mascots of Sweet Sixteen teams. According to him, the Saluki was the first purebred dog in the world; and specifically, it is an Egyptian greyhound. I assume that is not a bus on the Cairo - Giza run. Additionally, a Jayhawk is supposedly a creature that was made up by the students and the student newspaper at Kansas about a hundred years ago. He says that the colors for that school reflect the Crimson of Harvard because there were a lot of Harvard grads on the faculty at Kansas. Evidently, there were a lot of Yale alums there too and so the blue had to be added to make crimson palatable to the Yalies.

by Bob Andelman "During the late 1940s and early '50s, I peddled my bicycle 20 miles in each direction two or three times a week to watch the Los Angeles Rams practice in training camp. I was able to meet a lot of players. I wasn't an autograph seeker, though. I just liked to watch them practice, hear the grunts and groans, the hits. I'd try to do what they did. I grew up without a father around (his father died in World War II) so I had to pick that up alone and be successful at it." Jim Runels

As boys, we're drawn to athletes who embody all we strive to be: cunning, fast, aggressive, agile, handsome, witty, attractive to women. Guys like Johnny Unitas, Mean Joe Greene, Joe Namath, O.J. Simpson and Dan Marino never age in the eyes of idolizing youngsters. The image of the stars as hearty, full-of-life players cements in the eyes of young men, no matter how many hairs on Namath's head turn grey. It's a different experience for grown men. Our boyhood heroes retire and fade from the game before we reach our assigned cubicles in the work place and we don't become as attached to their replacements.
