Career Batting Record Only 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds, Fox was a left-handed hitting second baseman who could hit and field. His trademark was an enormous chaw of tobacco that always thrust out one of his cheeks. Some said the tobacco was bigger than he. Fox played just 10 games for the NL's Philadelphia Athletics in 1947 and 1948 and spent half of the 1949 season with Philadelphia before being traded to the Chicago White Sox of the AL in 1950. He was named the league's most valuable player in 1959, when the White Sox won the pennant. Fox batted .306 that season, one of six times he hit better than .300, and he led AL second baseman in fielding percentage. Fox led the league in hits four times, with 192 in 1952, 201 in 1954, 196 in 1957, and 1987 in 1958, and he was the triples leader with 10 in 1960. He was the league's best fielding second baseman six times. In 1964, Fox was traded to the NL's Houston Astros. He retired after playing just 21 games for them in 1965.

    The Nellie Fox Story
by David Gough and Jim Bard Reviewed by Max Silberman
David Gough and Jim Bard have produced a book about Nellie Fox that goes well beyond his baseball career and introduces the reader to a very fine human being who happened to play baseball. The Nellie Fox journey began in St. Thomas, Pa. on Christmas Day, 1927 and his path to Cooperstown, NY, where he was a 1997 inductee took him through Shibe Park and the Athletics farm system before his glory days with the Chicago White Sox and final years with the Houston Astros, (nee Colt .45s) Philadelphia Athletics Society members (including Nellie Fox's devoted fan and collector, Howard Singer) will remember the trade that sent the future Hall of Famer to the White Sox in October 1949 for catcher Joe Tipton. Tipton played for four American League teams as a back-up catcher, while Fox went on to greatness. A's fans also bemoan the swap of George Kell to the Detroit Tigers earlier in 1946. Barney McCoskey, obtained for Kell gave the A's several very productive years but did not achieve Kell's Hall of Fame status. Although Nellie Fox played only three seasons for the A's (1947-49) readers will recognize many familiar names in the stories about his minor league days in Lancaster, PA and Lincoln, NE, with many future Philadelphia A's.

    Nellie Fox
    The One That Got Away
    by Dale Smith
During his 50-year reign as manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, Connie Mack was known for having an uncanny ability to spot potential. Whether on a college diamond, an independent minor league team or through the A's own farm system, Connie just seemed to know which players were going to have Hall of Fame or near Hall of Fame careers. Connie's strategy was to develop and keep the great ones until he could no longer afford them, typically through at least the first half of their career. In 1949, however, at the end of his career, Connie's judgement failed him. As he watched his little second baseman, Nellie Fox, during the 1949 season, he saw nothing special. But very special he turned out to be. Jacob Nelson Fox was born on Christmas Day, 1927 in St. Thomas, Pennsylvania. His father, Jake Fox, was a second baseman and manager of a semipro team. Nellie learned the game almost as soon as he could walk. At 17 years of age in 1945, Nellie was playing pro ball with Lancaster of the Inter-State League. In the military service in 1946, Nellie played again for Lancaster in 1947 and the 19-year-old was up to the Athletics for a cup of coffee at the end of the season. It was at Lincoln in the Western League in 1948 that Nellie gave notice that he deserved to be in the major leagues. He hit .311 while collecting 179 hits and scoring 97 runs. His Lincoln teammate, Bobby Shantz, had a pretty good year himself, winning 18 games while losing only 7 with 212 strikeouts in 214 innings. Both players would make the 1949 Philadelphia Athletics roster.

The New York Times (c) Houston Astros BALTIMORE, Dec. 1 (AP) Nellie Fox, former second baseman for the Chicago White Sox, who was the American League's most valuable player in 1959, died today at University Hospital. He was 47 years old and lived in St. Thomas, Pa. Mr. Fox entered the hospital in mid-October suffering from widespread skin cancer. Epitome of Hustle
By Deane McGowen He was christened Jacob Nelson Fox, but to his major-league teammates and to thousands of baseball fans he was Nellie, a strange nickname for one of baseball's tough guys. Like Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds, Nellie Fox was the epitome of "hustle." Hustle was the chief reason Nellie Fox became a successful ballplayer. He was irreverent, too. The late Casey Stengel, then managing the New York Yankees, said of Fox: "That little feller, he ain't so big, but he's all fire. He's caused me more grief than any other player on the White Sox." Stengel related one story as a case in point. In a game between the Yankees and Chicago, a close play at second base brought Stengel running from the dugout. As Stengel arrived to give the umpire a piece of his mind, Fox snapped, "What're you doing out here? Gonna tell us a couple of your funny jokes?" The ebullient Stengel was silenced. Some Distinguishing Things Fox's trademarks in baseball were a giant-sized chew of tobacco jutting from his jaw, and his bottle-sized bat and his ability to get a piece of the ball at the plate.

I can't recall the date, but I vividly remember waking up one day in 1958 with the mumps. So I put on my black White Sox cap, ran into the kitchen and proudly announced, "Look, Dad, Nellie Fox!"
He wore No.2, batted second and played second base for the No.2 team in the Second City. Which probably explains why Jacob Nelson Fox, the White Sox' sparkplug with the perpetual chaw in his left cheek, was forced to take the longest side road to Cooperstown.
Maybe it was because he "only" had a .288 lifetime batting average with 35 home runs and 790 RBI in 19 major-league seasons that kept him out of the Hall of Fame so long. Heck, Frank Thomas averages more home runs per season than Fox hit in 2,367 games and will have driven in more runs by the middle of this, his ninth season.
But you know what? Foxy struck out only 216 times in his entire career and only 192 times in 14 years with the White Sox. Heck, Dave Nicholson, one of his1963teammates,hadalmostas many

    Expensive Love, (I John 4:9-10)
When our son Doug was little, he was really into collecting baseball cards. Actually, so was I at that age - except they were on stone tablets back then. I grew up in Chicago, and I loved the Chicago White Sox - and my favorite player, Nelson - or Nellie - Fox. Nellie was their all-star second basemen who was later inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Now those baseball card companies print a lot of the less-known players, and a comparative few of the stars. So, try as I would, I could not get a Nellie Fox card. I could get 6 of every other White Sox player, but Nellie Fox - not a chance.
One day Doug and I were at a big baseball card show - I was really just along for the ride. Then, at one table, there he was - Nellie Fox. I told Doug - who was about 10 years old at the time- about my childhood search for that card. I wasn't going to spend money on it - I was just happy to see the old boy, just under glass. I had come to doubt whether such a card had ever existed. Doug and I split up at that point, and he started cruising the tables with the modest savings he had from his allowances. About 20 minutes later, I felt someone tapping on my arm - it was my son. He was reaching up, holding something in his hand. He said, "Here, Dad. I love you." And there in his hand was that Nellie Fox card. He had spent everything he had on it. I was wiped out. I felt very loved.
My son is in his 20s now - but that moment will never be forgotten. That moment he spent everything he had to show his love . . . when I felt his deep love through his great sacrifice. It's what God wants to do for you. The word love may be a tough one for you - too often, it's meant disappointment . . . betrayal . . .paying the price to get it, but coming up empty . . .and too many lonely times. Then you may be ready for the one love that will never disappoint you . . . never betray you . . . never leave you alone.
