The Production Line -
Gordie Howe, Sid Abel and
Ted Lindsay It was Tommy Ivan who put together the greatest scoring line in the history of the Detroit Red Wings. Ivan had been coaching in Indianapolis, the Detroit farm team, but to start the '47-'48 season he was behind the Red Wings' bench in place of Jack Adams, whose health was better served as GM of the team. Ivan's strategy was brilliant in its simplicity. He put the best two young players on the team-and inseparable friends-on a line with the aged and iconic centreman, Sid Abel. Abel was Hall of Fame material, and a member of the 1943 Cup-winning Wings team. He was in the twilight of his distinguished career, but Ivan knew that Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay could both bring out the best in Abel and also cover for his slowness by having two bolts of lightning on his sides. Gordie Howe receiving the Hart and Art Ross from NHL Commissioner Clarence Campbell Howe and Lindsay spent their every waking minute together, and Howe idolized Abel to extraordinary degrees. The three men stayed after practise on a regular basis and fooled around with the puck, eventually perfecting one of hockey's greatest innovations-the set play. To take advantage of the speed of the wingers and to minimize the problems of having a slow centre, the wingers would shoot the puck in to the opponents end after crossing centre ice. They would angle their shoot-in so that the puck would bounce off the boards and slide to the front of the goal where the other winger could get to it. That winger would either make a quick pass to Abel in the slot or take a shot himself. It was a brilliant play for the era because in those days goalies never came out of their net, so they never thought about cutting off the shoot-in or blocking the pass in front.

Gordie Howe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Gordie Howe (born March 31 ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who is often referred to as "Mr. Hockey." Born Gordon Howe in Floral, Saskatchewan , he made his professional debut in 1946 at the age of 18, playing the right wing position for the Detroit Red Wings . He quickly established himself as a great goal scorer and a gifted playmaker. Using his great physical strength, he was able too dominate the opposition in a career that spanned five decades. In a feat unsurpassed by any athlete, in any sport, Gordie Howe finished in the top 5 in scoring for 20 straight seasons. Howe led Detroit to four Stanley Cups during his tenure as a Red Wing. After 25 years, a wrist problem forced him to retire but a year later he was offered a contract to play with the Houston Aeros of the newly formed World Hockey Association. An operation to improve his wrist made a return to ice hockey possible and he led his new team to consecutive championships. In 1974, at the age of 46, Gordie Howe was selected as the WHA's most valuable player.

Gordie Howe
Born: March 31, 1928
Place of Birth: Floral, Saskatchewan
Major Notes:
  • The New York Rangers in 1943 turned down Howe, who was 15 at the time, at a hockey try-out because he was too "scrawny" The next year, Howe tried out with Detroit and he was assigned to their franschise team. He joined the Red Wings in 1946 when he was only 18 years old. A remarkable player with a wrist shot of over 100 mph, Howe captured the scoring championship six times. He was voted the Most Valuable Player in the league six times as well. Because of his longevity, he was able at one time to play on a professional WHA team with his two sons! Howe was a player with both offensive and defensive skills coupled with great skating ability. Some fans suggested that Howe was sneaky in checking and he developed the nick name "Mr.Elbows". He finished playing hockey at the age of 52; a record that probably will never be matched. His teams won four Stanley Cups, emblematic of the league champions, and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972.. Howe played a remarkable 32 seasons of professional hockey.

May 30 ~  Love What You're Doing Hockey's Most Wanted "You've g o t to love what you're doing. If you love it, you can ov e r c o m e any handicap or the soreness or all the a ch e s and pains, and continue to p l a y for a long, long time." ~ Gordie Howe Hockey legend Gordie Howe (1928-), born in Floral, Saskatchewan, played for 32 years, spanning five decades (1946-1980), more than any professional athlete in any team sport. When Mr. Hockey retired in 1980, he held nearly every NHL scoring record, including most goals (801), most assists (1,049), and most games played (1,767). "If you've lost a game and learned nothing, then you've truly lost," he once observed. Howe's passion for hockey began when he was six. Growing up, he used newspapers for shin pads and old tennis balls for pucks. At 18, he played for the Detroit Red Wings, then three years later survived a near fatal head injury on the ice, crashing head-first into the boards. That was the first of many injuries for the resilient hero. According to The Sporting News , Howe in hockey took more than 400 stitches and broke his nose and his ribs. "Gordie's gone through so much in his career," reflected his wife Colleen. "You name it, he's had it."

Gordie Howe was born March 31,1928 in Floral, Saskatchewan. He joined the Detroit Red Wings in 1946, after spending a season each with junior teams in Saskatoon and Galt and one minor pro season in Omaha of the USHL League. Even though the majority of Gordie's career would be spent with the Detroit Red Wings it could have been very different. In 1943, Howe was invited to pre season workouts by the New York Rangers but the team sent him home because he was homesick and they felt he was too scrawny to play successfully in the NHL. As Howe matured he filled out to an impressive 6 foot, 205 pounds. Gordie had remarkable speed and was able to shoot from either side with equal dexterity. He was known by many nicknames, including "Mr. Elbows" by opponents and "Mr. Hockey" by his fans. During his career, Gordie established several NHL records. Among them, seasons played (26), regular-season games (1,767), career goals in regular-season play (801), and selections to NHL All-Star teams (21, twelve times to the first team nine to the second). In addition. Gordie holds records for winning goals (122), games including playoffs (1,924), goals including playoffs (869), career assists by a right winger (1,049), and career points by a right winger (1,850). Hall of Famer and former Red Wing teammate Bill Gadsby said of Howe, "he was not only the greatest hockey player I have ever seen, but also the greatest athlete". The only player to accumulate more NHL records is the great Wayne Gretzky.
