My Hockey Memories by Gordie Howe DESCRIPTION Known for decades throughout North America as "Mr. Hockey," Gordie Howe played 32 full seasons in the NHL (and WHA). During that time, he and the Red Wings won four Stanley Cups and nine Prince of Wales Trophies (most points in the regular season). He won the Hart Trophy (League MVP) six times, the Art Ross Trophy (most individual points) six times, and appeared in 20 All-Star games. His career statistics (including the WHA) are (with the singular exception of Wayne Gretzky), unparalleled in the history of the sport: NHL WHA TOTALS GOALS ASSISTS TOTAL Howe's numbers for total games played (2,421) and total penalty minutes (2,419) are extraordinary. He was among the strongest, toughest and most talented players on the ice. In his late forties he was still feared and revered by men half his age. Lavishly illustrated with images from the Harold Barkley Archives plus dozens of pieces (photos and memorabilia) from the Howe family's own extensive collection

November 27, 1960 Mr. Hockey scored his 1,000th career point on November 27, 1960, an assist in a 2-0 win over Toronto. It would be another eight years before another player matched the output ( Jean Beliveau ), but even more incredibly it would be twenty years later before Howe registered his final NHL point. Quotable:
"Many times when I hit the blueline, I have no idea what I'm going to do to put the puck in the net."

Mr. Hockey against Johnny Bower in the '63 Cup Finals
For 20 straight seasons, Gordie Howe was in the top five in NHL scoring, playing in 29 All-Star games. While many of today's over-50 crowd is being laid off, Gordie Howe at age 52 was playing 80 games in his final season of hockey.
When Eric Lindros entered the league, he was often pegged as the "next" Gordie Howe. There will never be another Gordie Howe, and certainly not Lindros, who has turned out to be as durable as peanut brittle.
Howe was nothing short of a beast. In his day, Howe was one of the game's best passers, playmakers and snipers, not to mention physical forces. Imagine Wayne Gretzky 's scoring prowess with Scott Stevens heavy hitting ability. For Howe, the stick was not only for scoring goals. "Mr. Elbows" was one of the meanest players of his era, feared not only for his scoring, but for his vicious ways on the ice.
By 1946, at age 18, Howe was in the NHL, playing of course for the Detroit Red Wings. He scored a goal in his very first game. His first few years, Howe was mainly an enforcer, however by the season, Howe was second in goals only to Montreal's Rocket Richard. Detroit's famed "Production Line" of Howe, Ted Lindsay and Sid Abel were 1-2-3 in league scoring.

Private Art Sales - Please contact the reseller(s) listed above for more information and to purchase Before painting hockey legend Gordie Howe, I had the chance to get to know him. Part of what I learned is captured in this painting. Here, echoes of the past come to life, as the future Mr. Hockey acquires his first skate. One of his older sisters had laid claim to the other skate, but Gordie knew that if he was patient he would own both. Skates changed Gordie's life. He moved from farm life, skating on the frozen sloughs of a wintry prairie, to decades of fame in hockey arenas across North America. Painting Gordie Howe was a great challenge for me. It was also an opportunity to honour an outstanding career, and pay tribute to one of professional sports all time greatest athletes. The next year he attended the Detroit Red Wings camp and the rest as they say is history. When the saying "Mr. Hockey" was coined, it didn't take an expert to deduce that there was only one player who qualified for that lofty status. Aldo Guidolin, an opponent of Howe back in the early days, understatedly remarked "Gordie plays a funny kind of game; he doesn't let anyone else touch the puck!" Hall of Famer Bill Gadsby claimed "He was not only the greatest hockey player I've ever seen, but also the greatest athlete." The right winger was a giant in his time at 6'1" and 205 lbs. He had the build of a heavyweight boxing champion. And he knew how to fight.
