Mario Lemieux: Le Magnifique + Hockey Hall of Fame Early Hall of Fame Induction 9/9/97 TORONTO: Two-time Stanley Cup winner Mario Lemieux (1991 and 1992) is the ninth player to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame earlier than the normally required three-year waiting period. A spokesperson for the Hall explained that the usual wait was waived, because of Lemieux's "outstanding pre-eminence and skill." This is a great honor for one of hockey history's greatest players, occurring just months after his last game. His induction was unanimously agreed upon. The eight others before him to receive the same honor were: Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, Jean Beliveau, Terry Sawchuk, Red Kelly, Ted Lindsay, Maurice Richard and Dit Clapper. The ceremony took place November 17, 1997. Mario's #66 sweater was retired two days later, November 19, 1997, at the Igloo in Pittsburgh. "I enjoy building something good and having a successful product and making money," the entrepreneur H. Wayne Huizenga has said. The hero of a real-life Horatio Alger story, in his early twenties Huizenga worked as a garbage-truck driver. Striking out on his own, he started a one-man trash-collection operation that, within a decade, had grown into a highly profitable enterprise providing employment for several dozen people. In 1968, combining his business with three other companies, he created Waste Management, Inc., which, when he resigned as president and chief operating officer in 1984, having decided to retire, ranked as the largest trash haulage and disposal business in the world. parent.location.href="http://www.hhof.com" The Return of Le Magnifique - Mario Lemieux Although many NHLers left hockey half a century ago to join North America's war efforts and returned to continue successful hockey careers, no one has been out of hockey longer than Mario Lemieux as he prepares to make his return to the NHL after an absence of three and a half years. Gordie Howe retired from the game after the 1970-71 season because of arthritis is his wrists. The Hockey Hall of Fame waived the three-year waiting period and inducted Howe into the Hall that very fall, but Howe returned two years later at age 45 to play in the WHA with his sons Marty and Mark. He then played for seven more seasons including four WHA seasons with more than 30 goals. In his final NHL season, 1979-80 with Hartford at age 52, Howe still managed to appear in all 80 games, score 15 goals and was a +9. Howe was the first Honoured Member to play in the NHL Guy Lafleur retired early in the 1984-85 season and returned to the game under even stranger circumstances. He waited the requisite three years and was inducted into the Hall in 1988. The ceremony took place that September, but just days later, Lafleur decided he missed the game and went almost immediately to the New York Rangers' training camp to resume his playing career at age 38! He scored two goals his first trip back to the Montreal Forum. After three NHL seasons (one with the Rangers, two with Quebec) Lafleur hung his skates up for good. His point totals decreased each year, from 45 to 34 to 28, well off his peak years when he recorded six straight seasons of 50 goals and 100 points.

When I was six or seven, I knew that was what I wanted. Certainly we're not satisfied with just winning games. We've been playing some pretty good hockey, but we think we can play much better. A month before the season I stop putting ketchup on my french fries. [when asked by a journalist what he was doing to stay in shape] One thing I hate is people screaming at me. If you want me to do something, talk to me. When someone screams at me to hurry up, I slow down. Every day is a great day for hockey. I'm not surprised we're seeing a lot of empty buildings in the cities we're going into. The way the game's played now, it's a pretty boring game.
