Scott Hamilton on gays in skating
In the U.S., 1984 Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton is probably the best-recognized and wealthiest male figure skater. A major element of his popularity is his lovable, good-guy persona. But one not-so-lovable Hamilton trait has been his lifelong homophobia, which he discusses with uneasy frankness in his 1999 autobiography Landing It Hamilton became famous in the 1980s not only for his triple lutz and impeccable figures, but also because he rebelled against ornate or effeminate-looking figure skating costumes and favored the athletic look of a speed skater-like bodysuit. "Frankly, I was sick of people constantly assuming I was gay because I was a figure skater," he wrote (p. 191). "This fear of being labeled definitely played a role in my decision to radically alter my costumes in my last year of amateur skating." It was not until 1997, in his "Figaro" program for the Stars on Ice tour, that he had the security to wear an ornate costume, and even then it was in the context of an ironic, comedic parody. Hamilton commented publicly that he was nervous about that costume, but audiences accepted it readily. It is clear from the book that Hamilton has attempted to do some soul-searching on the issue. "'Homophobic' was an accurate description of my feelings toward gay men," he wrote (p. 192). "I used to joke about the lifestyle, partly because I had spent the previous 16 years fending off the cruel humor directed at me. 'Fairy,' 'sissy,' 'faggot,' I had heard them all." Hamilton's story is a clear example of how homophobia affects U.S. male skaters regardless of their personal orientation.

Little did I realize at that point that the entire evening would consist of Todd in leather pants. Not only the red leather pants, but also the black leather pants, and later the black leather pants accompanied by the Who Let the Dogs Out shirt. Seeing Todd in that outfit once again in Philadelphia really made me feel like I was in some kind of time capsule! For his first solo number, Todd skated great to a version of Whiter Shade of Pale. I really hope SOI considers having him do this in the tour because it is an absolutely wonderful piece of music for him, and it was a big hit with the audience. He received a standing ovation at the end.

Scott Hamilton and Friends Gala Review
The Gund Arena - Saturday Sept. 8, 2001
Written by Nancy Hodan
The band announced Scott and he flew on to the rink in a black sparkling shirt, skating to "Sliden." Scott looked fantastic performing lightning fast footwork, huge russian splits and multiple jumps that were landed with ease. The rapid beat of the music, spotlights of stars sweeping the ice, made a lively start for this fabulous show. Scott caught his breath and talked about last years show. Mentioning Clevelands own pianist Jim Brickman and singer Anne Cochran. Scott says he found a party band for tonights show. Then he shouted "It's Party Time!" His plan is to re-invent the show every year. And plans on "doing these shows forever." Remarking that "this is a celebration for those that have conquered cancer. This show tonight is going to be a party." Scotts first friend to skate was dressed in tight leather pants and a candy apple red tight t-shirt. His smile sparkled and his skating dazzled the audience. Steven Cousins "Mustang Sally" number was SMOKIN!! He exploded with power and had this crowd in the palm of his hand. He finished with a forward to backward lunge and extended into the splits. But it wasn't over yet....he made us dizzy with a blur scratch spin. Steven the "Showman" shined! Another performer and friend of Scotts that joined this group was singer and actress Susan Anton. She sang a song by Otis Redding called "Can't turn you loose." She mentioned " The ice is gonna melt before the show is over." Then said a cute remark about "all those guys backstage in leather pants."

Pros
Scott's struggle with cancer and a strange childhood illness
Cons
Many boring details The Bottom Line A somewhat boring book, but an insider's view of the skating world. I have always liked Scott's skating. The book provides a closer look at his life. Full Review If you want to know about Scott's battle with cancer, skip to Chapter 21. Scott opens Chapter One with "The Pain that Won't Go Away", and alludes to his cancer that was diagnosed in 1997, but we really don't learn any details until much later. The struggles with an illness in his youth that forced him to wear a tube taped to his face and stunted his growth made for interesting reading. In 1969, he skated in his first Tri-State Free Skating Competition and he was only 49 inches tall and weighed just 51 pounds. His mother died in 1977 of cancer. Cancer Comes Knocking in 1997 On page 407, we FINALLY learn about Scotty's bout with the dreaded Cancer. Scott had a biopsy at the Cleveland Cancer Center and he describes the procedure and his feelings. His fantasy of having his own TV Special was coming true and it had aired in March. This was after years of hard work driving towards this goal. His skating special was airing about the time he was discussing his biopsy with urologist Eric Klein and oncologist Ronald Bukowski. He had a large, malignant nonseminomaltous germ-cell tumor in his abdomen. The source of the tumor was his right testicle.

sitemap Extras News ... History Scott Hamilton S cott Hamilton began his illustrious career in 1980 at the Winter Olympic games in Lake Placid, N.Y., by being chosen the bearer of the U.S. flag during the parade of nations. Scott Hamilton By custom, the flag bearer is chosen by a vote of the entire U.S. Olympic contingent. This honor was bestowed on 21-year-old Scott, a bronze medalist in figure skating, because of the odds he had overcome to reach that point. He had already accomplished what for many years of his life had seem impossible. He had become an athlete. Scott was adopted six weeks after birth by Ernie and Dorothy Hamilton of Bowling Green, Ohio. At the age of two, Scott stopped growing. It took years to discover the problem, a rare medical condition called Schwachman's syndrome, caused by an improper absorption of nutrients due to paralysis of the intestine. He first set foot on ice when he was nine years old. His older sister, Susan, took him to a rink and he put on his first ice skates. His doctors are not sure why, but agreed that the combination of exercise and the lower temperatures of the rink atmosphere somehow restored his health. He began to grow at a more normal rate. Scott's rise through the amateur ranks was slower than he would have liked, especially because his mother died of cancer in 1978 before he had won a senior medal.
