In November 1976 he scores his first goal.
By now Maradona's reputation is growing rapidly, and in February of 1977 he plays his first match for Argentina against Hungary. However, despite his enormous talent, Argentine coach Cesar Menotti does not include him in his final squad of 22 players for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina - saying that Maradona is too young to handle the pressures of the world's greatest soccer tournament. A decision that was to be a wise one as Argentina lift the famous trophy after beating Holland in the final, with Mario Kempes being the hero of the Argentine fans - but Maradona was to have his day.
In September of 1983, he suffers the worst injury of his career as a result of a tackle by Andoni Goicoechea, defender of Athletic Bilbao, Maradona suffers a broken left ankle and ligament damage. After recovering from this terrible injury, he joined Italian Serie A side Napoli on June 1984, and was given an unforgettable reception by the Napolia fans upon his introduction.

Diego Armando Maradona is by many regarded as the greatest player in the history of the game. He was born on October 30th 1960 in Lanus outside Buenos Aires. There he played for Los Cebollitos (The little onions), before he joined Argentinos Juniors. At 16 he was Argentina's youngest-ever international when he played against Hungary. Two years later he captained the World Youth Cup winners and was soon transferred to Boca Juniors for £1.000.000. The success continued and he was voted South American Player Of The Year in 1979 and 1980. In 1982 Maradona joined Spanish giants Barcelona for a world record transfer fee of £5.000.000. The same year the World Cup was held in Spain and Maradona made his World Cup debut on his new homeground Estadio Nou Camp. The tournament didn't end as Maradona had hoped and he was sent off against Brazil in the second phase, as Argentina bowed out.

The helicopter touched down near Azul Stadium in Mexico City on March 20 with its world star passenger 45 minutes late for an exhibition game in honor of Carlos Hermosillo, who scored more goals than any other Mexican in the history of his country's professional soccer league. Diego Armando Maradona is now 41, out of retirement for this game, and overweight from inactivity and living a life of excess. But he was there. The capacity crowd cheered his entry onto the field where he played 38 minutes of the first half. In this very city in 1986, Maradona scored his famous "Fist of God" goal and another to lead Argentina to a 2-1 victory over rival England before many of these very fans leading them on still to a World Cup.

Troubled Argentine star a complex case study
Click here for more on this story Posted: Tuesday January 11, 2000 05:12 PM Two summers ago I was standing in a hallway at the Stade de France, roughly an hour before the World Cup Final between France and Brazil. Pele was a few steps away, surrounded by a thronging mass of sweaty journalists, all eager to get a word with the great man. The Brazilian legend was being pushed this way and that, simultaneously giving interviews in five languages. All of a sudden, there was a commotion at the other end of the hall. The herd of journalists turned their backs on Pele and stampeded past me like a bunch of buffalos in heat, knocking over a FIFA minion and his stack of papers. When the dust cleared, I was left alone with Pele, his bodyguards and one of his public relations flaks.

74. Maradona: San Diego
October 30, 1997, was diego armando maradona's thirtyseventh and mystical significances, maradona immediately announced his retirement from soccer.
http://eserver.org/bs/35/hawkes.html
Maradona: San Diego David Hawkes
Bad Subjects , Issue # 35, November 1997 October 30, 1997, was Diego Armando Maradona's thirty-seventh birthday. That day, he received news that his father had died. Then he received news that this news was not true. Shaken by the experience, and doubtless reading into it various arcane and mystical significances, Maradona immediately announced his retirement from soccer. This is the sixth time in his career that he has made such an announcement, but it is probably the last. In August, Maradona tested positive for cocaine after a match for his present team, Buenos Aires' famous Boca Juniors. The first time he tested positive for cocaine, in 1991, he received a fifteen-month suspension. He received another fifteen month suspension in 1994, after being thrown out of the World Cup in disgrace, the "performance enhancer" ephedrine coursing through his veins. Like almost everyone else, only more, world soccer's governing body FIFA hates Maradona. They will certainly persecute him to the fullest possible extent. Unless he can prove his claim that someone spiked his tonic water with cocaine, Maradona's playing career is over. As his previous experiments in that direction have proved, Maradona conspicuously lacks the "leadership" skills required to function as a coach. It is possible to imagine all sorts of interesting futures for Diego Maradona, but they do not involve an active role in soccer. Nor is Maradona likely to follow the dignified footsteps of Pele to a ministerial position in his national government.

http://www.vivadiego.com/whois.html
WHO IS DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONA?
Diego Armando Maradona has been the greatest football player ever!
To prove this, just think that the most beautiful goal in the history of football was scored by Maradona in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico against England, when he dribbled 6 English players and the goalkeeper scoring an amazing goal... just few minutes after his world-famous "Hand of God" goal, when he scored with his hand and the referee did not notice that! Born on October 30, 1960 in the poor slums of Villa Fiorito in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Diego grew up with soccer. He was nicknamed "El pibe de oro" (the golden boy): he started in Argentinos Juniors, then joined Boca Juniors and led the Argentina youth team to win the world cup in 1979. After the 1982 world cup in Spain, when he was already an idol, he joined Barcelona and played in Spain for two seasons. In 1984 he joined Napoli and won here two Italian Championships in 1986/87 and 1989/90, a Coppa Italia (1987), an UEFA cup (1989) and a Supercoppa Italiana (1990). In the mean time, he was the hero of Argentina's triumph in Mexico 1986 World Cup since he led the team to the final victory. Unfortunately, after failing a dope test in 1991 he was banned from the soccer fields. After the suspension, he went to Spain to play for Sevilla and then back to Argentina with Newell's Old Boys. Then, after a pair of coachings in Argentina, he came back to Boca Juniors. In the World Cup of 1994 in the USA, Maradona was tested after the match against Nigeria and was found to have used "ephedrine", not permitted by FIFA. He was suspended from playing soccer for more than a year as punishment. Although Argentina came in with a strong team in the 1994 World Cup, everything went downhill and, without their captain, they were soon defeated.
