Horsley: We need more irascibles like Edward Abbey
"This is the most beautiful place on earth. There are many such places." Edward Abbey, 1927-1989 David
    Horsley
Can it really be almost 10 years since Ed Abbey, that joyful, irascible, combative man who wrote those lines, is said to have died? Mounting evidence notwithstanding, I still find it hard to believe. Yes, I know all about the reports. Hospital reports, funeral reports, false grave sites scattered about Abbey's beloved hills (to throw grave robbers off the trail? Or to increase their sport?) This newspaper printed a brief obituary which now functions nicely as a bookmark. And it's true that his final novel, "The Fool's Progress," had all the marks of being written by a dying man. But all his books had marks of being written by a dying man. A man dying of love, of rage and outrage, of the sheer unutterable beauty of this Earth and the gracefulness of life upon it. Dying, like the pale phantoms in his story "The Brave Cowboy," of nostalgia and loneliness. "Let's keep things like they were," he said. Born and raised in Appalachia during the Depression, Abbey came west as a young man, falling deeply and passionately in love with the Southwest, an area which would serve as the setting for his novels and subject of his essays. He launched a writing career in 1956 with "The Brave Cowboy," a novel later made into the movie, "Lonely Are The Brave," with Kirk Douglas.

    Edward Abbey
A CRUCIAL DILEMMA, Born an easterner (1927), Abbey first saw the West when he was seventeen, while hitchhiking around the country. In an essay written years later, he characterizes the particular power and promise he felt when he glimpsed the arid desert landscape: "for the first time I felt I was getting close to the West of my deepest imaginings–the place where the tangible and the mythical become the same."Most of Abbey's writings, in fact, have been efforts to convey that West, the one of his deepest imaginings, the one he fears is facing destruction today. After World War II he returned there, to study philosophy at the University of New Mexico, to explore the desert as intimately as possible, and to write. His first book, however, is not set in the West: instead, Jonathan Troy (1954) recounts the painful Pennsylvania adolescence of a very egotistical young man. This unsuccessful early piece of fiction reveals few of Abbey's strengths, but deserves mention because its conclusion prefigures his subsequent and repeated emphasis on the psychological needs that are filled by the physical West and by the abstract notion of wilderness. Abbey's second novel

    Chasing Abbey
The trail to some sort of personal peace seemed to wend high into the Himalayas. But where it led was back to an old friend.
By Doug Peacock A Al, Dennis, and I linger in the pale light of evening until long after the guides have turned in. Al, who has been climbing in the Himalayas for 20 years, regales us with stories. During one expeditionary climb of Everest in 1987, Al's job was to ferry loads across the fearsome Khumbu Icefall, one of the most treacherous spots on the mountain. To relieve himself of the monotony, he waited to watch an attractive woman climber slowly make her way past him. Al followed close behind, one eye out for danger, the other fixed on his lovely companion. Just as they approached a ladder breaching a crevasse, an ice tower fell with the jolt of an earthquake and the crevasse collapsed, sucking the ladder into its white belly. Were it not for his sophomoric dawdling, Al would have gone down with it. I dream of a legendary journey, a trek surpassing

Abbey Biography Extracts ... Web Links Abbey earned his place in the Ecology Hall of Fame with two books and one extra-literary creation. The first book, Desert Solitaire, is a classic of environmental literature, combining nature writing, the philosophy of life and death, and political observations regarding freedom, democracy, and the management of National Parks. The other book, The Monkey Wrench Gang, created a whole new branch of the environmental movement. All those who espouse non-violent social protest in the tradition of Ghandi's satyagraha must consider Abbey's heros as their prototypes. But Abbey's greatest creation was Cactus Ed, his own public personna. Though in many ways he was a quiet scholar and fine craftsman as a writer, he recreated himself as a brawling revolutionary, shocking conservative audiences and frustrating environmental allies by throwing beer cans out the window as he drove at high speed through the desert he assailed others for despoiling. Abbey Biography Extracts ... Web Links A Brief Biography Edward Abbey was born January 29, 1927 in the improbably named town of Indiana, Pennsylvania and lived most of his childhood in a nearby town with an almost-equally unusual name, Home. He grew up in the Depression in a family always on the verge of poverty. His father held a wide variety of jobs including lumberjack, farmer and school bus driver. His mother taught school and played the organ in church. Both his parents held outspoken, liberal views. His father was a dedicated socialist. His mother was an early proponent of ordination for homosexuals. In high school he was a loner, and his literary talents were so well disguised (despite some writing for the school magazine) that he failed Journalism twice After graduation he joined the Army just in time for the end of the war. He went to Italy and served largely as an MP, policing brothels in Naples. Following his discharge in 1948, he went to college, first at Indiana University of Pennsylvannia and later at the University of New Mexico and, for a year, at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. His academic field was always Philosophy but his interest usually centered around social action, especially anarchism. His Masters Thesis was titled "Anarchism and the Morality of Violence." Despite this academic concentration, his true passion was for the American West, especially the desert. He first saw the west in the summer of 1948 when he hitch-hiked to Seattle, south to California and then, crossing into Nevada at Needles, he entered the region now indelibly stamped with his name. His writings of his love for the west and his passion to protect it from despoilation are among the most evocative and influential of all American environmental works.

A Mexican Writer Comes To Terms With The Ghost Of Edward Abbey.
B y L u i s A l b e r t o U r r e a I'M DRIVING ED Abbey's Cadillac to Denver. It has moldered away in a dirt alley off Tucson's venerable main drag, and now it's going to reside in a pricey Republican enclave on the compromised high plains outside the mile-high city. Of course, if I told you which 'burb it was, I'd have to kill you. A fire-engine red '75 Eldorado, it's been parked for a year behind Ed's pal Buffalo Medicine's house, accumulating a thick coat of dust and a calligraphy of cat and raccoon tracks across its massive hood. The cables have fallen loose in the engine compartment, the generator's shot, weeds have choked the wheels, and the ragtop's in sad shape. Local writers cruise by occasionally, tip their gimme caps, raise a can of Coors, and drive away. Their wheels churn up the alley dirt, adding another layer of dust to the Caddie. Just like Ed's memory. Buffalo Medicine has possibly rooked El Piloto, a devotee of the Abbeyite Order, by selling him the car for money which might or might not be too much. Opinions vary. It all depends on where you're positioned in the continuing Ed debate. In Tucson, the debate is quite personal, since locals trade Ed sightings like baseball cards. Ed AbbeySasquatch.
